  1. all of Turkey's Armenian, Syriac, Catholic and Protestant communities are prohibited from opening seminaries or Bible schools to train their clergy Christian seminaries or Bible schools are not allowed in Turkey 4 October 2013 After decades of waiting, the high hopes of Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I and Turkey's tiny Greek Orthodox community for a green light to reopen the Halki Seminary were again shattered. The Turkish state's forced closure of Halki Seminary since 1971 has prevented Eastern Orthodoxy's most prominent seminary from providing its clergymen with a theological education for more than 40 years. Founded in 1844 atop Heybeli Island near Istanbul, the Halki Seminary's status has been tied for decades to the principle of 'reciprocity' with Greece's handling of its ethnic Turkish minority. "Certainly the minorities' issues could have been addressed more actively in the package," Vingas said to Bianet. "Unfortunately, the [Greek] theological school will remain shackled." The government's refusal to open it, Today's Zaman columnist Orhan Kemal Cengiz wrote, leaves the Ecumenical Patriarchate which leads 300 million Orthodox worldwide "at the edge of total extinction". In parallel, all of Turkey's Armenian, Syriac, Catholic and Protestant communities are prohibited from opening seminaries or Bible schools to train their clergy. Seized monastery lands 'returned' However, the nation's small Syriac Christian community welcomed the prime minister's announcement that state-confiscated land belonging to the Mor Gabriel monastery in southeastern Turkey would be returned to the church. But Tuma Celik, owner and chief editor of the Syriac-language Sabro newspaper, objected to Erdogan's implication that any of the 1,700-year-old monastery's land had ever belonged to the Turkish government. "The attitude of 'returning' Mor Gabriel, as if it was ever the property of the state, is wrong. Actually, this land belonged to the [syriac] foundation," Celik told Today's Zaman. In a controversial Supreme Court of Appeals verdict last November, the government had wrested away legal control of 680 disputed acres of land around the monastery. After Ankara suffered heavy international criticism over the final ruling, Celik said, the decision to reverse it was drafted "with the concern of decreasing international pressure". In terms of actual implementation, Deputy Prime Minister Bulent Arinc specified that a formal decision regarding Mor Gabriel would be issued by the Foundations Council "at the latest by the end of next week". 4. Top QC: time to recognize Karabakh as independent stateOctober 4, 2013 http://www.panarmenian.net/eng/news/170874/ PanARMENIAN.Net - An international conference Artsakh Liberation Struggle: From Gulistan Till Our Days kicked off in Stepanakert. The event, held in the framework of the Karabakh national liberation struggle 25th anniversary hosted acclaimed scientists from Arsakh, Armenia, Russia, France, Germany, Great Britain, Austria, Belgium, Greece, Cyprus, Lebanon among other countries. As Karabakh President Bako Sahakyan stated in his address, the Armenian nation’s aspiration for an independent life and the restoration of national statehood is one of the lengthiest national liberation movements in world’s history, with regaining sovereign and powerful national statehood, ensuring its continuous development as an inalterable supreme strategic goal. Dwelling on the current stage of state building, the President noted that there’s no return to the past, with Artsakh’s independence and safety not to be to be bargained. A human rights barrister, top QC Geoffrey Robertson, in turn, noted that the international legislation is developing a clause stipulating for bypassing of the territorial integrity principle where a crime against humanity was perpetrated. As he noted, the international law provides a right for secession when the nation’s fundamental rights are violated. “It’s time to recognize Nagorno Karabakh as an independent state,” he stressed. According to the Artsakh Foreign Minister’s adviser Arsen Melik-Shahnazarov, in Soviet period, the communist historiography falsified the role of the Gulistan Treaty in the history of the Armenian nation – as an importan stage on the way to liberation of the Eastern Armenia from colonial rule of Persia. It was this treaty that stipulated for the transfer of a number of Armenian territories from Persia to Russia, which had a clearly positive effect in preservation of the people’s safety as well as their political and economic development.

  7. British politician: It's time to recognize Nagorno Karabakh as an independent state by Tatevik Shahunyan October 5, 2013 http://www.arminfo.info/index.cfm?objectid=BB78A1B0-2DC1-11E3-98590EB7C0D21663 It's time to recognize Nagorno Karabakh as an independent state, said a human rights barrister, top QC Geoffrey Robertson at an international conference Artsakh Liberation Struggle: From Gulistan Till Our Days that has kicked off in Stepanakert. He said that the international legislation is developing a clause stipulating for bypassing of the territorial integrity principle [correction: territorial integrity of Armenia means Armenia & Karabakh are one] where a crime against humanity was perpetrated. As he noted in the conferance, the international law provides a right for secession when the nation's fundamental rights are violated. He said that Nagorno Karabakh became part of Azerbaijan as a result of historical injustice [correction: Artsakh was never made part of Azerbaijan but locally was put under Azeri supervision administration for Russian political manipulation purposes]. "It's time to recognize Nagorno Karabakh as an independent state," he said in the conferance and recalled Monaco and Liechtenstein and even Vatican. He recalled the final criteria of statehood set in the Montevideo Convention: permanent population, a defined territory; government; and capacity to enter into relations with the other states. Nagorno-Karabakh has all criteria to be named an independent state, he said for conclusion.
  8. Over 100,000 sex slaves in Turkey, half are children: NGO http://www.tert.am/en/news/2013/10/06/turkey/ 6 Oct. 2013 There are over 100,000 women working as sex slaves in Turkey, of which half are children, a non-governmental organization has revealed in an extensive report on prostitution in the country, The Hurriyet Daily News reports. Up to 3,000 prostitutes work in brothels located in 55 of the 81 provinces of Turkey and 15,000 other registered prostitutes work with an official document, according to the report prepared by Shefkat-Der, a civil association founded to help marginalized segments of society. The most shocking aspect of the report, however, is that the number of women selling sex on the streets has climbed to over 100,000, half of whom are children. It stated that many underage girls from impoverished families, especially in eastern and southeastern provinces, had become victims of the "prostitution mafia." Vulnerable children who have been the victim of abuse inside their own family, orphans, and mentally challenged children are also often prey for organized crime rings. The report added that women up to the age of 60 are working in brothels. Shefkat-Der attracted media attention last spring when it filed a petition to Parliament to ask for permission to open a brothel employing males, in protest at brothels where women are employed. For Shefkat-Der and women's associations, the fact that there are more brothels in Turkey than women's shelters has long been a cause of criticism of both the state and local government.

  10. Armenians, too, get nothing — not even a promise of an impartial inquest into allegations of genocide against them in 1915 Erdogan taking Turkey back 1,000 years with ‘reforms’ By Amir Taheri October 4, 2013 NY POST http://nypost.com/2013/10/04/turkeys-erdogan-taking-turkey-back-1000-years-with-new-reforms/ Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyib Erdogan this week unveiled his long-promised “reform package” to “chart the path of the nation” for the next 10 years — that is, through 2023, 100 years after the founding of Turkey as a republic. Which is ironic, since Erdogan seems bent on abolishing that republic in all but name. His plan to amend the Constitution to replace the long-tested parliamentary system with a presidential one (with himself as president and commander-in-chief) is only part of it. He’d also undo the key achievement of Kemal Ataturk, the founder of modern Turkey. In the 1920s, Ataturk created the Turkish nation from the debris of the Ottoman Empire. Ataturk and the military and intellectual elite around him replaced Islam as the chief bond between the land’s many ethnic communities with Turkish nationhood. Over the past 90 years, this project has not had 100 percent success. Nevertheless, it managed to create a strong sense of bonding among a majority of the citizens. Now Erdogan is out to undermine that in two ways. First, his package encourages many Turks to redefine their identities as minorities. For example, he has discovered the Lezgin minority and promises to allow its members to school their children in “their own language.” Almost 20 percent of Turkey’s population may be of Lezgin and other Caucasian origin (among them the Charkess, Karachai, Udmurt and Dagestanis). Yet almost all of those have long forgotten their origins and melted in the larger pot of Turkish identity. [What about the Armenians who converted to Islam and melted in the larger pot of Turkish identity?]. What is the point of encouraging the re-emergence of minority identities? Meanwhile, Erdogan is offering little to minorities that have managed to retain their identity over the past nine decades. Chief among these are the Kurds, 15 percent of the population. Erdogan’s Justice and Development Party, the AKP, partly owes its successive election victories to the Kurds. Without the Kurdish vote, AKP could not have collected more than 40 percent of the votes. Yet his package offers Kurds very little. They would be allowed to use their language, but not to write it in their own alphabet. Nor could they use “w” and other letters that don’t exist in the Turkish-Latin alphabet but are frequent in Kurdish. Kurdish leaders tell me that the package grants no more than 5 percent of what they had demanded in long negotiations with Erdogan. Another real minority that gets little are the Alevites, who practice a moderate version of Islam and have acted as a chief support for secularism in Turkey. While Erdogan uses the resources of the state to support Sunni Islam, Alevites can’t even get building permits to construct their own places of prayer. Armenians, too, get nothing — not even a promise of an impartial inquest into allegations of genocide against them in 1915. The second leg of Erdogan’s strategy is to re-energize his Islamist base. Hundreds of associations controlled by the Muslim Brotherhood are to take over state-owned mosques, religious sites and endowment properties — thus offering AKP a vast power base across Turkey. Indirectly, Erdogan is telling Turks to stop seeing themselves as citizens of a secular state and, instead, as minorities living in a state dominated by the Sunni Muslim majority. Call it neo-Ottomanism. Erdogan is using “Manzikert” as a slogan to sell his package. Yet this refers to a battle between the Seljuk Sultan Alp Arsalan and the Byzantine Emperor Romanos in 1071, the first great victory of Muslim armies against Christians in Asia Minor. It happened centuries before the Ottoman Turks arrived in the region. Invoking the battle as a victory of Islam against “the Infidel,” Erdogan supposedly has an eye on the battle’s thousandth anniversary. Does he mean to take Turkey back 1,000 years? The Ottoman system divided the sultan’s subjects according to religious faith into dozens of “mullahs,” each allowed to enforce its own laws in personal and private domains while paying a poll tax. It’s doubtful most Turks share Erdogan’s dream of recreating a mythical Islamic state with himself as caliph, albeit under the title of president. His effort to redefine Turkey’s republican and secular identity may wind up revitalizing it.

This should teach Armenian girls to marry their own kind.

October 3, 2013 Global Fund for Community Engagement and Resilience by Ryan Mauro Ryan Mauro is the ClarionProject.org’s National Security Analyst, a fellow with the Clarion Project and is frequently interviewed on top-tier TV stations as an expert on counterterrorism and Islamic extremism http://m.clarionproject.org/analysis/us-taxpayers-pay-spread-turkish-qatar-islamism Millions of American taxpayer dollars will be spent promoting the Muslim Brotherhood brand of Islamism to counter the Al-Qaeda brand of Islamism. The U.S. is teaming up with the Islamism-promoting governments of Turkey and Qatar to try to influence Muslim youth in a more positive direction. The U.S. and the Islamist government of Turkey have announced a $200 million fund for programs that will supposedly promote non-violence among Muslims in terrorist hotspots like Pakistan, Somalia and Yemen. The total is to be raised over 10 years, with the U.S. provided $2-3 million (at first), along with Turkey, Canada, various European countries and “private sources.” The only other Muslim country mentioned as a partner besides Turkey is Qatar. As the sole Muslim participants in the fund, Turkey and Qatar will be the ones crafting the Islamic message against Al-Qaeda. The fund, called the Global Fund for Community Engagement and Resilience, will bolster Muslim local programs like vocational training, social networks and new school curriculums. The thinking behind this fund is the same flawed thinking that upholds the Muslim Brotherhood as the moderate, democratic, non-violent alternative to Al-Qaeda. This logic was articulated by Director of National Intelligence James Clapper in testimony on January 31, 2012—testimony that came after his previous embarrassingly inaccurate explanation of the Brotherhood: “Al-Qaeda probably will find it difficult to compete for local support with groups like the Muslim Brotherhood that participate in the political process, provide social services and advocate religious values. Non-violent, pro-democracy demonstrations challenge Al-Qaeda’s violent jihadist ideology and might yield increased political power for secular or moderate Islamist parties.” If you believe that the Brotherhood’s Political Islam is the solution to Al-Qaeda’s Political Islam (as does the Obama administration), then your natural ideological allies would be Turkey and Qatar. The tiny Gulf nation of Qatar is subsidizing the Muslim Brotherhood and acts like a bank for the Islamist cause. Al-Jazeera is based there, as is the Muslim Brotherhood’s spiritual leader Yousef al-Qaradawi. Turkey’s Prime Minister Erdogan was dubbed the "King of the Islamists" in a Clarion Project analysis in March. His government sided with the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt and he says Hamas isn’t a terrorist group. Erdogan has been implementing Sharia law in Turkey incrementally using the Islamist doctrine of "gradualism." A backlash against the Sharia agenda of Erdogan contributed to the huge protests Erdogan faced over the summer. The protests are ongoing, but are not being covered by the Western media. Turkey’s neo-Ottoman ideology is promoted even in the U.S. through the Fethullah Gulen charter school network, the Turkish government’s embrace of Native American tribes, and Turkey’s direct involvement in the construction of Ottoman-themed mosques, like the $100 million mega-mosque being built in Maryland. Instead of making alliances with Turkey and Qatar, the U.S. should instead look to Muslim leaders like Jordanian King Abdullah II, an adversary of the Muslim Brotherhood. He has marginalized the Brotherhood opposition that threatened his reign by embracing liberal critics. We should listen to what King Abdullah had to say about Turkey under Erdogan. He pointed out that Erdogan “once said that democracy for him is a bus ride. 'Once I get to my stop, I'm getting off'." Abdullah was referring to a statement Erdogan made in the 1990s before he took power. He said democracy is “a train that takes you to your destination, and then you get off.” Jordan’s King has also said that style and patience is the only difference between Erdogan and former Egyptian President Morsi, who was overthrown in an anti-Muslim Brotherhood revolution. He said, "Instead of the Turkish model -- taking six or seven years being an Erdogan --- Morsi wanted to do it overnight.” Unfortunately, America’s strategy will either create more Al-Qaeda recruits by expanding the overall Islamist following, or -- if it works as intended -- will hurt Al-Qaeda but strengthen the other Islamist movements.

Assad: "Soon Islamist terrorists will turn on Turkey," an act which peace loving Turks may decide to convert to Christianity in mass.. Turkey will pay for harboring ‘terrorists’ – Assad October 05, 2013 Syrian President Bashar Assad said that Turkey will pay a “heavy price” for harboring and backing “terrorists” in order to oust him, warning that soon enough the terrorists will turn on Turkey. Assad referred to Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan as "bigoted" and accused Turkey of aiding terrorists by allowing them to cross into Syria, Reuters reported, citing an interview with Turkey’s Halk TV. "It is not possible to put terrorism in your pocket and use it as a card because it is like a scorpion which won't hesitate to sting you at the first opportunity," Assad said. "In the near future, these terrorists will have an impact on Turkey and Turkey will pay a heavy price for it." Turkey is home to about two million refugees [actually less than a million, Lebanon has more refugees than Turkey] who have fled Syria since the country’s unrest began in March 2011. Turkey is also one of the biggest supporters of Syrian opposition forces. The country plays a key geopolitical role in the conflict, as it shares a 900-kilometer border with Syria. Assad claimed that Erdogan has a sectarian agenda, since his AK Party has origins in conservative Islamist politics. "Before the crisis, Erdogan had never mentioned reforms or democracy, he was never interested in these issues ... Erdogan only wanted the Muslim Brotherhood to return to Syria, that was his main and core aim," Assad said. More: http://rt.com/news/assad-turkey-harboring-terrorists-753/
  15. Have patience "gamavor" and MosJan. If satan was able to use the Turks to destroy the Armenians, much more God is able to use the Turks to bless us. When? That is up to God. P.S. Did you know that God spoke thru the mouth of the donkey of Ballam in the Old Testament book when Ballam was traveling from Mesopotamia to Israel by a donkey ? If God can speak thru the big mouth of a donkey, He can speak someday thru the mouth of the Turks and thru the mouth of types like Arpa..
  16. A Real Hero Dr. Lyudmila Grigoryan“I know one thing, that I know nothing.” This famous quote from Socrates is the mantra that the chief primary care physician of the Nagorno Karabakh Republic (NKR) Dr. Lyudmila Grigoryan has been following for the last 40 years. Doctor Grigoryan works at the Stepanakert Republican Hospital’s department of general medicine, and she is in charge of the most critical medical cases. Her life story is rich and tough. She has often found herself right in the middle of the most challenging events, taking an active leadership position to meet the problems head-on. Such was the case in 1990-1995, when her entire family became fighters in the war of the liberation of her homeland – NKR. Dr. Grigoryan lost her husband, she, herself, was wounded several times, and, while wounded, she continued to help her wounded fellows and even continued to fight. Today, Dr. Grigoryan understands and appreciates the importance of continuing education, which might be why she holds the position of chief therapist of NKR. She recently applied for the CME course that the Fund for Armenian Relief conducts for NKR doctors with funding from the American Armenian Health Professionals Organization (AAHPO). “When I saw her application, I became concerned about whether we could organize an appropriate training program for a doctor and an individual of her caliber,” says Dr. Hambardzum Simonyan, the Director of FAR Healthcare programs. In the course of the four-week training that followed, Dr. Grigoryan proved to be one of the most inquisitive trainees, challenging her much younger colleagues and setting an example with her impeccable discipline and sense of responsibility. At the end, when she was evaluating her mentors and trainers (a mandatory part of the trainings), one could see a spark in her eyes – she was so appreciative. Since 2001, dozens of NKR doctors since 2011 have been given a unique opportunity to participate in the CME program in the leading hospitals of Armenia thanks to AAHPO’s remarkable investment. As the NKR Minister of Health Zoya Lazaryan stated recently, the impact of this program on the entire healthcare system of the Republic, as well as on the wellbeing of the people, is incredible. In addition to organizing critical training for the doctors, the AAHPO CME program also provides basic medical equipment and supplies for local hospitals. Very recently, the Republican Diagnostic Center received an ultrasound diagnostic machine, a gift from the well-known American doctors and philanthropists Dr. Rafy Hovanessian (AAHPO Board member) and Dr. Levon Nazarian (AGBU Board member). “In my life, it has always been me who is thinking about everybody and everything,” reflects Dr. Grigoryan. “This is the first time that someone else has taken care of and organized everything. And, of course I know now who that ‘someone’ is – AAHPO and FAR.” As for the organizers of this remarkable program, they are humbled to discover real heroes living and working in the neighborhood like Dr. Grigoryan.
  17. Hi gamavor! Someday the Turks will convert to Christianity, began serving the true God, and then start mending their misdeeds with the Armenians and blessing them! With God there is nothing impossible!
  18. Someday God will use the Turks to bless the Armenians. The timing is up to God. Comfort yourselves in those true words!
  19. No man, no priest, no bishop, no cardinal, no pope, has the authority to re-write the Word of GodThursday, September 19th, 2013 My dearly beloved daughter, My poor sacred servants will, after the Liturgy has been tampered with and desecrated before Me, come running to Me in great sorrow. Only when that happens, will they realise that the Word of God is being made known through God’s prophet, and that it is the Truth. The Word of God is the Truth. It can only be the full Truth or not at all, if the prophecies given to God’s children are from Him. Many will gather and unite to prepare to pay homage to Me, in the way which honours Me, for nothing will stand in their way to uphold My Holy Word; My Holy Sacraments; My Holy Mass and the Most Holy Eucharist. But even then, many will not see the errors, which are going to be presented to unsuspecting souls. Only when the Church of God is declared to be in union with pagans, and their ludicrous practices, will more of My sacred servants truly understand what is happening. Only when the pagan symbols and satanic signs begin to be shown inside of, upon and at the exterior entrances to Christian Churches, will they run for their lives. There will be great fear in their hearts, because many of them, at that stage, will have nowhere to go, as they failed to prepare for this day. These will be the ones who will be hunted down because they did not respond to My Call. Their pride and their egos prevented them from recognizing My Voice. So many of My sacred servants will be caught unawares, and many will be powerless against the reign of the false prophet and his cohort, the antichrist. These two will be ruthless in their quest to control all nations and anyone who dares to stand in their way will be destroyed. While those sacred servants within My Church on Earth will be trapped, unless they are prepared, it is the souls of the faithful, the loyal followers of Me, Jesus Christ, who will be misled into grave error, which causes Me such bitter sorrow. Many will be afraid to show disloyalty to the Church, even when My Teachings, My Holy Doctrine, and all the Sacraments have been altered. Let them know now that no man, no priest, no bishop, no cardinal, no pope, has the authority to re-write the Word of God. When they do this, they have broken God’s Law. Only the Church of God, which remains faithful to My Teachings, is infallible. Once that bond – the bond where only the Truth is declared in My Name – is broken, they become separated from Me. I Am the Church. You, My followers, My sacred servants, are part of Me when you adhere to My Holy Doctrine. The Church – My Church – will remain intact, for the Truth can never change. Those who separate from Me can not be part of My Church on Earth. Your Jesus

  21. Hemp is a very valuable plant, serving a number of mankind’s needs. Industrially speaking it make superior rope, superior cloth as in canvas. Drinking or using hemp oil has the quality of making one relaxed. This quality that allow hemp to make one relaxed and forgetful have a positive effect on numerous diseases. Foe example eating hemp seeds, which is high in Omega-3 and Omega-6 oils, has cured someone's swollen ankles and feet. How does hemp oil, which unlike hemp seed does contain THC, cure cancer and ease MS and glaucoma? Because many diseases are caused by the body itself, a reaction to stress or depression. Ease that, and the body’s normal functions return. Cancer is a result of a failing immune system, most often due to a sense of helplessness, an inability to escape. This accounts for spontaneous remissions, where the cancer, even at the point of death, just turns around and shrinks out of sight. The person has decided to live. A slightly stoned cancer patient forgets why he was depressed. He instead notices the birds singing, the smile and wink from a stranger passing by, the relaxation in this fashion allows someone to see that life is worth living. MS is an auto-immune disease, where the body attacks and destroys its own cells. It is caused by a hyper-vigilant immune system, a reaction to stress. When relaxed and resulted short term memory makes one unable to even recall what the worries were, the MS patient finds their immune system reverting to normal. It is not just relaxation from muscle spams, it is in fact moving in the direction of a cure. This is the case for disease after disease, where the body has created the problem. The cannabis when used as medicine would help the sufferers from sickness. Even watching funny films and laughting would cause someone to relax and recover from illness rapidly without the use of cannabis. This plant is as prevalent as weeds and unlike alcohol, which consumes sugar or corn for its production cannabis is not a food crop. It asks nothing more than to be allowed to grow, and does not require special treatment in order to do so. Like many of the plants that mankind has found particular useful as medicine. The problem is when the healthy people start using this weed by smoking since it takes the alterness from them and cause them to work and drive sluggesshly ending being fired from them jobs, thus affecting himself and his family economically; and often banned from driving and black marked by insurers. Hemp and Marijuana although are from the same family of plants, but differ in their effects, the former has industial uses and does not have hallucination and addictive effect of the later; the later is used currently for medicinal health purposes, and used by healthy persons (illegal in many states) for fun/recreation and for chilling out with numbing effects on the users hence its illigelity while hemp products is not illegal to eat or use. Medical Marijuana http://www.glaucoma.org/treatment/medical-marijuana.php Advocates of medicinal marijuana cite evidence that hemp products can lower intraocular pressure (IOP) in people with glaucoma. However, these products are less effective than medicines prescribed by an eye doctor. The high dose of marijuana necessary to produce a clinically relevant effect on IOP in the short term requires constant inhalation, as much as every three hours. The number of significant side effects generated by long-term oral use of marijuana or long-term inhalation of marijuana smoke make marijuana a poor choice in the treatment of glaucoma, a chronic disease requiring proven and effective treatment. Currently, marijuana is designated as a Schedule I drug (drugs which have a high potential for abuse and no medical application or proven therapeutic value). The only marijuana currently approved at the Federal level for medical use is Marinol, a synthetic form of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the most active component of marijuana. It was developed as an antiemetic (an agent that reduces nausea used in chemotherapy treatments), which can be taken orally in capsule form. The effects of Marinol on glaucoma are not impressive. Medical Research Studies To date, no studies have shown that marijuana— or any of its approximately 400 chemical components—can safely and effectively lower intraocular pressure better than the variety of drugs currently on the market. Currently, there are no National Eye Institute studies in the United States concerning the use of marijuana to treat glaucoma. The Glaucoma Research Foundation will continue to monitor the research community for any new and well-designed studies regarding the use of marijuana to effectively treat glaucoma. http://abcnews.go.com/Health/marijuana-reduce-symptoms-multiple-sclerosis-patients/story?id=16328805

  23. Nairi Sharabkhanian, a Canadian and a female volunteer in Armenia, writes: He [the taxidriver] scrunched his nose and raised one eyebrow. “Why would you leave your rich life to come volunteer here?” I was shocked. No one has ever referred to my life as “rich” and besides that, this was the first time someone was questioning my decision to come to my homeland for a 14-week volunteer service. I sighed and replied, “Why not?” One of the greatest difficulties in my life has been my identity. I am an Armenian living in a non-Armenian country, how could that be? I have devoted my entire life to teaching my Canadian “odar” friends about my culture and my people. I feel like it is my duty to return to my homeland and share my skills and talents with my own people. “Are you getting paid?” he asked. “No,” I said. “You’re crazy for working here and not getting paid.” Did this man really think I would only come here to get money? “I understand life is difficult here,” I replied. “But every country has its issues. I’d rather live, with some struggles, in my homeland than in any other country. “ I volunteer because I care, because I’m human, and because this was the idea that I was brought up with in my household. I didn’t come here to change the country or the people. I came here to change myself, change my views of Armenia. The best way to understand Armenia is to live here. That’s why about 8 months ago I decided it was time for me to come and learn about my country and applied to Birthright Armenia, which ended up being an experience of a lifetime. I CAME to Armenia to be with my people. By the end of my stay, I SAW Armenia from a completely different perspective than when I initially began my journey. Furthermore, I CONQUERED my fears and did something that only few Armenians have done in my community. My four months in Armenia has been a journey. Feelings of confusion, frustration and being overwhelmed almost all the time became commonplace. I conquered another fear that I discovered in Armenia, my own journey of self-discovery. Although I was in that taxi for only 5 minutes it felt like hours. A million emotions were triggered by this man’s comments and soon I found myself wanting to tell him to keep driving me around so I can continue to tell him how lucky he is to live in a country that belongs to him. Tatevik Movsisyan, another female volunteer in Armenia, writes: This summer I fell in love… with Karabagh In love with the luscious green interweaving with war torn buildings. In love with the flowers growing out of concrete. In love with the view of Stepanakert from Shushi. In love with the magical jontik wanterfall. In love with the spirit of its beautiful people. In love with the kid that sang “karabaghtsi” at Gandsasar with so much emotion and heart that it brought me to tears. In love with the kids hanging out of their windows at the camp in Gandsasar asking if we’d be back tomorrow. This summer I fell in love…with Yerevan In love with purple bus number 28 that arrived at 9:15 every morning with enough standing room to get me to work. In love with the bus driver that smiled and said “khntrem” (you’re welcome) when I said thank you every morning. In love with the grandpa and granddaughter who got off the same stop as me every morning and walked together hand in hand, telling jokes and laughing joyously. In love with the breathtaking view of the city from the top of Cascade. In love with all-you-can-eat crawfish at Station pub. In love with girls nights with Vernashen wine and cheese. This summer I fell in love… with Birthright Armenia In love with all of the people I met. In love with the nights we sang and danced like there was no tomorrow. In love with the hats, paneer, pamidor sandwiches we devoured on excursions. In love with Sanahin, Haghpat, Ohanavank and every other place I would have never ventured if it wasn’t for Birthright. In love with the office and everyone sitting in it making the magic happen. In love with the serious security guard who makes wooden boats behind the counter. In love with the idea of being reintroduced to a city I thought I knew. Thank You Birthright Armenia for showing me how much there is to love in a country where everyone is looking for a reason to leave. My list could go on forever. Another female volunteer, Karine Vann, writes: My first few weeks living in Armenia were incredibly humbling. I won’t even hesitate to say that not speaking the language was the main reason. One example: Every day on my way to and from the metro station, I walked by a large shookah where vendors sold fresh fruits and vegetables. Every day, I wanted to buy a bag of fresh strawberries on my own to bring home to my host family (who was absolutely wonderful, by the way). It wasn’t until day 17 that I gathered the courage to do so — believe it or not, this was a huge milestone for me. Another milestone occurred much later and much more gradually, when, to my pleasant surprise, getting ripped off by taxi drivers became a less frequent occurrence. There were plenty more milestones — far too many, in fact, to list in this blog. By the time I left Armenia, I had experienced countless changes of mind and heart. When people from home asked what life was like in Armenia, I wanted to give an honest answer, but the truth was that I didn’t know yet. I realize now that two and a half months in Armenia was, for me, simply not enough time because I still can’t answer the question, “What is Armenia like?” Perhaps I never will completely. But it’s important to me that my idea of Armenia – my answer to the question, “What is Armenia like?” – is informed by reality to the best of my ability, and I owe an enormous thank you to BirthRight Armenia (its wonderful staff and its participants who have become dear friends) for helping me start to make that possible. It’s really unique, I think, that the Armenian idea takes on so many manifestations in and outside of the country itself. But whatever claims you might hear people making about the homeland, as outrageous, upsetting, funny, unrealistic, exaggerated as some might be, it’s important that the ideas are there. However far some may be from the reality, these ideas have proven that they have the power to motivate change, inspire curiosity, encourage action, and most importantly, when finally confronted with reality, ideas and perceptions themselves can change for the better. And when they do, the reality changes too. Matthew Nazarian, an American male volunteer in Armenia, writes: In Armenia, students I taught would express shock at the amount of drug use and violence in the US. They also seemed to generalize Americans as cold and selfish, and on some level they are right. In America we often neglect the notion of community and of family. There are strong communities in America to be sure, but the feeling of national kinship in Armenia is much stronger than it is in America. To understand what I mean, one must look no further than the Armenian sense of hospitality. While a group of twenty-something Americans quibble over dividing the bill evenly amongst each member of the group, making sure that nobody pays a cent more than they owe, a young Armenian, financially poor by American standards, is happy to treat the group to dinner. It is no exaggeration that an Armenian will quite literally give you the shirt off his back. I have seen it happen. The many possible reasons for this difference in culture are beyond the scope of this essay, but I believe the power of Armenian fellowship should not be underestimated. Yerevan, despite being the largest city of a developing country, is a much safer city than most US cities, and I saw far less homelessness in Yerevan than I see in New York or Philadelphia. Though it is just my own conjecture, I don’t believe it far-fetched to suggest that these observations derive from the tight-knit community in this small country. Armenia is a young country with many problems, but it has the benefit of a vocal young population and a diaspora who is invested in its survival. The younger generation seems to long for their nation to enjoy the same economic and social freedoms as the west, while maintaining their Armenian identity. The question is: What is to be preserved and what is to be improved? In order to answer this question, one must first decide what is central to the Armenian identity—what it means to be Armenian. In the diaspora we have so many, often conflicting, ideas about this definition. Therefore, I believe that going forward, the answer to what it means to be Armenian must ultimately come from Armenia itself. As an American from the suburbs of New Jersey, I do not believe it is my place to be a part of defining what is important to the country of Armenia. But as an Armenian it is my job is to be a student of the issues that Armenia faces moving forward and to use this framework to inform my Armenian identity and the ways I can be a part of Armenia’s growth. http://birthrightarmenia.wordpress.com/
  24. A Musical Rebirth in GyumriOn September 20, Gyumri’s Octet Music School finally opened its brand new doors. This marked the culmination of concerted efforts by major American-Armenian philanthropists and FAR benefactors Mr. and Mrs. Edward and Janet Mardigian, as well as Jon Dee’s internationally renowned “Do Something” organization, the “Mediamax” news agency, VivaCell-MTS and acclaimed rock stars Ian Gillan of Deep Purple, Tony Iommi of Black Sabbath, and Geoff Downes of Yes/Asia, among other benefactors. The new building will replace the cramped aluminum trailers that had served as classrooms since Gyumri was devastated by an earthquake 25 years ago. In just 11 months, the “Kanaka” Construction Company has built a two-story marvelous building made of tufa to replace the cramped aluminum trailers that had served as classrooms since Gyumri was devastated by an earthquake 25 years ago. The new building has all the conditions for the further development of education, including bright classrooms, a library, a concert hall, and an outdoor amphitheater. Many valuable instruments that have been donated by Canadian Tim Irving and other individuals have already made it to the school, and a new grand piano is on its way. Among the guests at the opening ceremony were President of the Republic of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan, Armenia’s Minister of Culture Hasmik Poghosyan, members of the FAR Board of Directors, as well as the governor of the Shirak region and the mayor of Gyumri, and other public officials and artists. One guest, the Ambassador of Great Britain to the Republic of Armenia Jonathan Aves, did not come empty-handed: he presented an audio-system to the students. In his opening remarks, His Eminence Archbishop Khajag Barsamian, Primate of the Diocese of the Armenian Church of America (Eastern), expressed his gratitude for this wonderful present for the children of Gyumri on the eve of Independence Day of Armenia and blessed all the participants of the project. He said a prayer for Armenia’s welfare and prosperity. “Mediamax” director Ara Tadevosyan expressed his special thanks to Ian Gillan and Jon Dee for their love and devotion to the people of Armenia. Jon Dee couldn’t restrain his tears when he recalled the hardships suffered by the people and the scenes that had followed the earthquake. He said, “‘Rock Aid Armenia’ project started in a very sad moment, but ended with a very happy occasion.” He also expressed his gratitude to the world-famous rock stars for being with the project for all these 24 years. Grant Mardigian didn’t hide his admiration for this wonderful event: “We’re happy that the children now have the opportunity to study and improve,” he said. Ian Gillan, also quite moved, could not find words to express his feelings. He pointed out that the construction of the new building symbolizes a musical rebirth in Gyumri and wished that the kids enjoyed it. He also expressed hope that the school will give many virtuoso musicians to the world. The director of the Octet Music School Harutyun Asatryan, had prepared a surprise for Ian Gillan: his portrait by Samvel Lachikyan, an honored artist of the Republic of Armenia. The school orchestra had planned a special treat, as well: a marvelous performance for the enthusiastic audience. To close the ceremony, the youth from the community, as well as President Sargsyan, Jon Dee, and other special guests, planted over 300 trees in the schoolyard that had been kindly donated by the Armenia Tree Project to green the site of the reborn music school.
