I have finally decided to open another section of Armenians.com -

Armenian Dictionaries

I have already converted and imported a few dictionaries but we need volunteers to keep these dictioanaries updated by adding new or editing exisintg entries.

I have an agreement with the author and owner of glossword.info made a while ago to join and share our dictionaries through their network to make our dictionaries available to all the other sites participating in their dictionary distribution project so whatever we have will be available to many other websites.

Movses have armeniannames.com domain name reserved for this project and I can separate this section from armenians.com and setup as a regular website but if we'll have other dictonaries added to our system then probably it's better to get another domain name and use it instead of armenainnames.com. Since this is a non-profit project we can register a domain ending in .org or .info. I'd like to get suggestions for domain name as well.

Garo and Movses,

An excellent project!

And a wonderful job well done!

Bravo!

:clap: :clap:

Yes it does need some editing, some misspells and at times too much generalization when some words and names are attributed to Turkish.

All in all a very worthy project.

As to domain name, since hopefully this will only be a nucleus for things to come how about ENCYCLOPEDIA ARMENIACA with a subtitle of AEMENIAN ENCYCLOPEDIA that will pop up to the search word of either, and the description may list what to expect, i.e language, dictionaries, names, surnames and whatever else will be added.

Once again, thank you and congratulations.

bararan.com is already taken but bararan.org is available

ENCYCLOPEDIAARMENIACA.com I think is too long and people may not type it correctly. This type of long names are good only if you want to get high search engine ranking for that keyword and usually this type of long names point to the main website that has shorter name.

I think it'd be better if the domain name is short, somehow is related to the content, is easy to remember and is easy to type for everyone who hears it. It would be better to find an Armenian word for this as well to make sure that it won't be already registered.

But the domain name is a secondary task for now. The main thing is to find volunteers to work on this project. We can assign one dictionary to one editor or one dictionary to a group of editors if it'll be a big one.

I have Dictionary of Armenian surnames by Tigran Avetisyan in Armenian with 17051 surnames that will be a very good source to use for building Armenian surname dictionaries in Armenian and English.

And somewhere I have a small book of Armenian male nd female names with about 3000 names in it if I'm ot mistaken that can be used to revise the dictionaries we have now. I can provide these books to the editors of these dictionaries.

Garo, what needs to be done exactly? Data entry? Or something more intensive? Also, what kind of editing will be required, do you think? Are you planning on offering dictionaries in Armenian (ie. using the Armenian alphabet, as well?)

Data entry probably will be one of the main things to do. Another thing that Arpa has already mentioned is going over existing entries and fixing the spelling/translation errors since the English version of Armenian male and female name dictionaries we have now have been translated in Armenia (Movses has hired someone to do that) and they need to be checked properly.

Also using the additional features that this particular software we use provide to us we can build a professional looking dictionaries with abbreviations, translations, definitions, sources, synonyms,links to other entries associated with every entry.

About Armenian dictionaries - we already have 2 dictonaries in Armenian available on our site - dictionaries of Armenian male and female names. The software we're using supports Unicode encoding and I have converted these dictionaries into Unicode so everyone can read these dictionaries in Armenian without a need to install Armenian fonts - Windows by default has Unicode fonts installed.

Are we still talking about this subject?

I had made a few suggestions about a domain name to which Garo rightfully and understandably expressed his trepidations (see above). Since then I ran a few searches on the internet and I was not much surprised that most every combination containing Armenia, Armenian, Hay, Hye have already been used, even such as Armeniana and Armeniaca are taken. Ajarian having finished his 4 volume Armatakan Bararan had realized that he had either omitted or sometimes erred in some of his entries, and for that reason he has added an addendum/appendix at the end pf Volume IV which he calls HAYKAKANQ/ARMENIACA. This title can also be easily interpreted as "trivia", some are, even if they are very educational and at times entertaining.

In a previous post I indicated that in the following site much credit has been given to Turkish, sometimes naivley and at other times mistakenly. One such example is the name Babajan, in both the Armenian and the English it is analyzed as having been fomed of the Turkish "baba"=father and Persian "jan"=soul/spirit/hogi. The Persian part is correct as the "jan" ending makes it endearing/paghakshakan, however the "baba" part, even if correctly means father it is in no way from Turkish. Yes the Turks use it in that sense, they also use "peder" (Persian). Baba is a universal word, the Persians use it just as Armenians and Arabs, remember Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves. Arabic has to do with the reason it is spelled with the letter B as there is no P in the Arabic. In fact the word is from the Greek "pappa" and the Latin Papa, Pope etc. I said it is a universal word that can be found in one form or other in most any language because its origin is baby talk just as mama etc.

Look here;

http://www.www2.armenians.com/dictionaries...st&d=1&p=1&w1=G

Another entry that caught my attention is;

======

GAREGIN

Was very popular in IV-V c. Then it was forgotten for a while to revive again. As this name is not found in other languages it is supposed to come from Old Arm. Its meaning is not established. We also have the short forms Garen, Garik, Garo as well as the surname Gareginyan (in some dialects Garagin).

=========

It does say above that Ajarian does not treat it. True. Which brings us to his Haykakanq where the author says; " 'Hayots anunneri bararan'is mej ays anvan tsagum@ nshanakel em anhayt (In my Dictionary of Armenian names I had indicated that the origin of this name is obscure)".

And he proceeds; Most old Armenian dynastic names are of Pahlavi origin, but I could not trace this in that direction. Upon further consideration he had changed his angle of observation and viewed the name(word) as ending in "gin" (arzheq/value) and comes to the conclusion that the word is purely and originally Armenian. Having concluded that the ending meant "valuable" Ajarian takes the task of explaining the first part of the name- "gar". He confesses that he had to discard its origin as from "gari" (barley), to make it short, he traces it in several other languages, all the way from Sanskrit to Greek, guru, gouru,, the Persian kran and finally the Greek "gravis" to mean "heavy/tank" (Remember that "gran" in Armenian means sledgehammer. arpa)

Therefor, Garegin ends up being composed of gar=heavy and gin=value, put together it becomes Gar-e-gin= heavy/tank, and valuable, tsanragin, tsanrarzheq, tankarzheq, TANKAGIN.

Not to forget!

Coming back to a domain name.

We could learn from Ajarian and use something like Haykakanq, this would be ideal as it encompasses everything Armenian, however the problem would be that most of us search the internet using "armenian" as the keyword, not to forget non-Armenian guests. "Armenakan" is taken as well.

How about ARMENAKANQ where the pluralizing Q ending will make it unique.

Arpa the following domains are not taken at this moment.

armeniana.com

armeniaca.com

armenakan.com

armenica.com

Hopefully someone won't jump in and register them before we make a decision. ;)

That's good news!

All of those words responded to my search hence my suspicion that they may have been taken, however a domain may be another animal that is beyond my expertise.

Let's do it!

I vote for armeniana.com .

It will pop up to any portion of "armenian" and the "a" ending will give a hint of what to expect.

Yes, could this be an example of "looking at the tree and not seeing the forest" lending meaning here perfectly? Babajanson is not someone who is the son of the soul of the father. "Babajan" means someone (invariably an old male) who is a jolly, cheerful person. IN FACT, it is a surname used in Turkish, too - they have a minister by that surname, Ali Babacan.

My two cents, I don't think those domain names themselves would be that handy. True, "armenian" is a subset of "armeniana," but search engines do not work like the "find" feature in Word or in your browser.

Last time I have made a post in the Topic most likely was the last time I even worked on it.

Only 20 days a go I / we start making arrangements in Armenia and have employed 3 new employees to continue what we have started - Poems – songs – Haqyatner ( kids ) and Notagrutyun (Sheet Music )

computers and ..... just made to Armenia 10 days a go – 2 of them will be entering text - one of them - PaperBoy - will enter News each day to this forum

Have 3 Book’s in Armenian that have been digitized - some of them been on my desk for 2 years

If not your post - I would not even remember this topic or the conversation we had – and I thank you for reminding me of my “duty”

At this moment - Poems – songs – Haqyatner ( kids ) and Notagrutyun (Sheet Music) are my priority

Unless some more people are welling to help – this is all we can do at this time

fell guilty of catching this stupid illness – have been out of my shop 80% of the time – can’t work – can’t even talk normal …. - most of my time is spend in the waiting rooms of the doctors office ... trying to fight this illness

Never have enough energy to do thinks that once I have dreamed of doing … or was doing it with A PRIDE and so much Joy ….. it’s not your problem Qeri jan – and I’m not trying to gave you excuse – I’m just telling you what has been going on in the passed year or so

I will do my best to finish what we have started – but more importantly – I wish to spend more time with my kids instead of Admin-ing HyeForum – that takes so much time and energy from me

I will replace my Bookmark and try and participate as the site does need some editting.
