Sip
Well, thanks to you, I have that song stuck in my head now ... so I hope someone pops up with a Maral song and very soon. Either that, or "Amman Tello" but sung as "Maral Tello" ... doesn't make sense but has a nice ring and "Maral" is better than "Amman" anyway. Are you following as to how many synonyms there are to Maral? Aydsiam by Gusan Jivani (I don't know the tune to this) Anhog es, ches giter inch ka qo masin, Pttvum en qo kheghj andzin vnasin, Gamprnerov, baraknerov miasin. .... 4 more verses. Arpa
Btw. Does Maral know that they have named a town for her in Armenia? Well, they must have named it some time ago when she was a little girl. It is located south of Gumri. Does anyone know its name? Yeghniki Pes by Gusan Havasi Al yeresd ala e, Batsvadz karmir lala e, Nayvatskd siroun aghjik, Glkhud dard ou bala e. Yeghniki pes dzur mi ashi siroun jan, Jahel em kyanqs mi mashi siroun jan. Yeghniki pes dzur mi ashi ay aghjik, Jahel em kyanqs mi mashi jan aghjik. ------- Can we guess what the finale will be?
nairi
Might be interesting to know that the Middle Dutch word for "heart" was "hert". Now it's "hart" and "hert" means "deer". Here's our national anthem, in both Middle Dutch (left column) and Modern Dutch (right column): http://www.wilhelmus.nl/tekst.html You'll notice that it's an acrostic that spells out 'Willem van Nassov', better known as William I of Orange (b. Dillenburg 4/25/1533 - d. Delft 7/10 1584). At the beginning of the song, in italics, it says "A new Christian song". The anthem was written by Marnix van Sint-Aldegonde in 1568 to unify the Dutch against the Spanish Inquisition (or so it is believed). The main controversy is over the first four lines which say: Wilhelmus of Nassau I am, of German blood Loyal to my fatherland I shall remain to death. The German blood causes a bit of pain even though our crown-prince is 3/4 German! His child is half Argentinian.. If you haven't watched Euro 2004, here's what you'll hear at the beginning of each match with Holland: http://www.wilhelmus.nl/sound/Netherlands.mid

Arpa
I'm sure many of us know this song. By Tatul Altunian. Maral, maral, marali pes man k'ougas, Bardz@ dnem, khalu vra yan k'ougas. Sirun aghjik naz ounes, Maral, maral.... Sokhaki parvaz ounes, Bardz@ dnem khalu vra yan k'ougas. Mi yar ounem anush a, Maral, maral.... Anush a tarlan ghush a, Bardz@ dnem, khalu vra yan k'ougas. Lusnak@ nor e, nor e, Maral, maral.... Yaris yeres@ klor e, Bardz@ dnem, khalu vra yan k'ougas. Lusnak gisher, hovn anush, Maral, maral.... Srtov sirats yarn anush, Bardz@ dnem, khalu vra yan k'ougas. ======== Yes,Steve, it does not make sense. I hinted in my first post when I wrote; "Doe, a deer, a female deer...." Maral means deer and all the songs above were for and about deer in several different synonyms. We are not the only people using the word as a feminine name, Turks do too, except that they spell it as Meral, and they also recognize the word to mean deer/gazelle. Next will be the grand finale with a Komitas classic.
nairi
Next will be the grand finale with a Komitas classic. I knew he would have written something about deers! I'm curious now!
Arpa
And now the Grand Finale. The classic by Komitas. Akh maral jan, Kokon@s tormats mnats, Jan, gyaral jan, Sirt@s krakats mnats. Akh, maral jan, Inch anem im aprel@, Jan, gyaral jan, Im achqer@ tats mnats. Kamar ounq@d govetsir, Sirel eyir stetsir,Indz pes ouzhov ktrichin Du andanalk mortetsir. Jahel em, @nker chounem, @nkel em, yes ter chounem, Voch lav tesq, voch el vat, Harstutyan ser chounem. I have no idea what "gyaral" means, it is probably used just as a rhyme. Btw. You can find this song on the internet. Just use any part or all of the phrase as a keyword.
Arpa
I knew he would have written something about deers! I'm curious now! I didn't know this but Komitas has another piece called Marali. It is not a song, it is a piano piece, a dance tune from Shushi.

Arpa
Thanks Nairi. I had that site bookmarked long time ago, then I lost and forgot about it. Thank you again. Also thank you for reminding me. That was one of the songs about Maral that I had in mind and forgot all about it. It is very old and I cannot find the words for it. This much I remember. "Gurjistani maral aghjik, kez inchpes yergem, kez inchpes yergem... etc". Of course we know Gurjistan is the Turkish name for Georgia/Vrastan.
