Stormig
Stormig´s second to last post is to the point, I am sorry to say that I have to commend her just for having common sense. Just for having common sense and nothing else? Sorry, I couldn't resist. OK, 'ere's another - 'ow much commission do ya get from ter shrink? I musta woken up with a tickly nerve this morning. Back to being serious - I think I agree with pretty much all you've said.
Twilight Bark
Hello TB, I see your point. But is there really any hope for that ? I think on an individual level you can understand certain unpleasant characteristics of your people, but how can "shame" permeate the national conscience when those feelings are those that also make others like "pride" and such, arise ? As I said, it was not a utilitarian statement. There are cultures that fully deserve to be ashamed of and cannot dissolve into the "world culture" soon enough, there are cultures that are kind of pointless, and there are cultures that one can feel good to be associated with (not because you want to take credit for something others did but because by embracing it you embrace those positive values). As for what I would like to hear Turks say, I don't much care. I would like them to change what they value, what they obsess about, and what they glorify. The rest of what I care about naturally follows from that. I'll leave it at that. Bye for now.
