MiB
Barev, Can somebody help me to find a book on Armenian history that can be recommended to foreigners? The book must: 1. not be too big (one or two volumes at most); 2. be written by an author who is a serious scholar with a serious western professional education; 3. not contain pathetic and non-scientific points (such as: “Napoleon was an Armenian”), etc. 4. [optional] be nicely illustrated. Thank you very much in advance for your help and references, All the best, MiB
ED
MiB, I would highly recommend Richard Hovanissian. You may find other authors as well in this web site. also try amazon or burns & nobels. http://www.alibris.com/search/search.cfm?S...fcTkEzGsIAmZkmg
America-Hye
A History of the Armenian People, Volumes I and II, by George Bournoutian, PhD. available from Mazda Publishers, Cost Mesa, California. These two volumes are much better sized than Dr. Hovanissian's two volume work. I have a set of both author's work right here in my library. Teutonic Knight
The Armenians, Peoples of Europe This is a very very simple summary of Armenian history. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detai...=glance&s=books
MiB
Dear Edward, Dear America-Hye, Dear Teutonic Knight, Thank you very much for the references you gave. The book of A. E. Redgate, Elizabeth Redgate has surprisingly many NEGATIVE reviews at amazon.com (written by Armenians and non-Armeians, by the way). I searched for George Bournoutian's book as well. I also found a newer book of the same author: "A Concise History of the Armenian People: From Ancient Times to the Present ": http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/search-h...0887675-9319836 Has somebody seen this newer book? Is that better then the previously mentioned two-volume version? All the best! MiB
Teutonic Knight
People complain about that book because it's very simple and short but that's exactly what you asked for. Like for example one guy says in the review that she doesn't even mention the Paulician heresy which jumpstarted Protestant thought centuries before Martin Luther. There are decent books with detailed history, maps, timelines etc. which are very large and expensive.
America-Hye
I just perused the Redgate book, here in my library. The Paulicians are mentioned, even wriiten about albeit in passing. A really good book on Armenian history is "the Kingdom of Armenia" by M. Chahin.
