Sip Posted March 25, 2004 Report Share Posted March 25, 2004 If I had to point out the ONE thing that I truley like(d) most about our Armenian and some of the middle eastern cultures is (was) "shnork" ... children being taught to respect others and especially elders, to show restraint when needed, and to act properly when around others. But now as I see more and more, especially in the diaspora (US is what I have in mind), these extremely "yeres arats" little kids running around thinking they are the shitz and they have all the answers. Of course this is not an "Armenian" problem but more of a product of a westernized culture that above all values the individual human rights to free speech and pursuit of happiness. Well ... free speech and the right to pursue one's own happiness is often in conflict with the types of things needed to keep a society functional. Respect for others, tolerance, understanding, sacrifice, compromise, etc all would require disciplin, restraint, and what I would classify as just plain old "shnork". Even in this forum we see little punk kids that show up running their mouths about things they have no clue about and disrespecting people that are old enough to be their fathers and even grand fathers. Sure age does not make one perfect but this trend surely can't be good in the long run ... So I ask again ... where did our shnork go? ... or it's still there and I just don't see things fully? You see, I live in this really god-awful place called Los Angeles, the "entertainment capital", and the "yeres arats" faction is perhaps the worst. Over the years I've personally witnessed this metamorphosis. I saw this in high school, and I still see it now. These parents open up nice businesses, make lots of dough, forget about their kids, they get em nice cars, spoil them to the brim, and this becomes the norm. Does stating an opinion respectfully to its question count as "anshnork" if so than i am guilty of that. but i dont think soo.. and for the rest i agree... its the "aperro" rabiz armos who cannot even put together a complete sentence. The rich and stupid... lol.. but they arent the only ones ofcourse... i know people who are spoiled, but they do not act better than others, so they dont have the spoiled attitude, which i respect. Godd.. thats so freggin true--- ive seen that around alott- the parents only care about the money and their business and they neglect their children and dont even bother to sit down and talk to them or even discipline them- half thetime they dont even know where their kids are or what they are doing- its not even funny- and then these kids grow up and start doing retarted things and jeopardizing other peoples lives- whether it be through the "im better than you are cause io drivea benz" fights or a stupid street race- im only generalizing ehre- but thats what ive seen go around- its just funny how people get tto that extent where they only prize materialistic things and neglect the whole notion of family and values and "shnork" i guess that the main cause is the parents fault- its really sad to see some armenians go to that level where they represent a low life sort of values- actually i can say NO VALUES at all- and they start being more and more like everyone else around them and the viscious cycle continues....I have alwayas said that alot comes from parents and the family- thats where we learn our values and who we are and most of our beliefs- Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Sip, it is not the kids who should be blamed but the parents. Parents work LONG hours sometimes and do not have the time to spend with their kids. This deprives the kids of having a proper upbringing. Their grades drop and their respect of others, not just elders, is something that they do not even understand anything about.
