DJ SINISTER Posted March 20, 2004 Report Share Posted March 20, 2004 I am highly knowledgeable with regards to house music, rap music, motown, soul, philly soul, nu-jazz, etc... A few years ago, I attended an Armenian funeral. At the funeral home, there was music being played in the background. It must have been the saddest, most emotional, yet absolutely gorgeous piece of aural artistery I have ever heard. I was proud, baffled, bewildered, and completely abacked. The song was just crying out at me. I asked the owner of the establishment what it was, but he was completely useless in this department. I had nothing to go on. Most Armenian music that I've heard is festive-style vocal songs that we hear at weddings and such. I am not a big fan of those (although I will play that style at my wedding one day (God willing).....but that's another topic ). I am searching for those Armenian gems and masterpieces that will make you cry. Songs of mourning. Songs of sorrow. Songs of Our Struggle..... Instrumentals please. Any help would be highly appreciated. GregoryM Posted April 15, 2004 Report Share Posted April 15, 2004 One of my favorites is Djivan Gasparyan's CD "Moon Shines at Night". Even the songs with happy titles, like "Lovely Spring", are sad. And "7th December 1988" brings tears to my eyes. The songs are very simple - only duduk and damkash, with occasional male vocals. The power of these songs comes not from fancy technique or intricate arrangments, but from deep emotions that seem to come straight from the soul. One of Djivan Gasparyan's finest. Komitas' Divine Liturgy is good if you're looking for emotional church music. The Choir of St. Gayane have a CD of it out on New Albion Records.
