Hye_Acher
Armenian girl seduced and cheated by Australian-Armenian Couple of days ago a beautiful 22 year-old Armenian girl named Liana Baghdasarian came to daily Azg’s editorial office and gave us a letter, asking to shed light to the bad luck that she suffered, and calling on Armenian young girls to be alert from foreign grooms. Let us tell the sad story of Liana. On a sunny spring day of 2001 Liana and her sister were walking along the Abovian street of Yerevan when an Australian-Armenian Henrik Melik-Vardanian approached them and started chatting with the girls. He invited the sisters for a cup of coffee, and asked the girls to show his brother Emil Melik-Vardanian the sights of Armenia. The girls gave their consent, and upon Emil’s arrival in Armenia several days later their friendship started. Soon Emil manages to win Liana’s heart, and their “true love” story starts. Three weeks after Emil acquaints Liana with his parents, who together with their other son, Edmond, had arrived in Yerevan to celebrate the latter’s wedding with a girl named Ann. Liana “impresses” Emil’s parents, who visit Liana’s house and get to know her parents. As the New Year was approaching, Emil’s parents decide to celebrate the New Year night at “Armenia” hotel, and invite Liana and her parents as well. At the banquet the old folks decide that Emil and Liana are a “best match” and decide upon the couple’s marriage. After mutual promises of love, Emil departs for Sydney January 4, 2002. Liana, who was then a 3-rd year student with excellent progress in study, decides to attend English language courses at the American University of Armenia to learn English, knowing that in Australia she will not be able to get a job without knowing the language. Emil praises her decision and himself pays the fee for the courses. Several months later the couple applies to the Australian embassy to allow Liana leave for Australia with a status of bride. Receiving a marriage visa November 10, 2002, Liana departs for Sydney to merry Emil. Emil and his parents, Manya and Hamlet Melik-Vardanians, meet their to-be daughter-in-law at the airport and take her to their place, where Liana lives for 5 months. During the whole period, though, no word about marriage was uttered. Only when Liana’s visa was to expire did the Melik-Vardanians take Emil and Liana to register as spouses. April 5, 2003, the couple gets registered at Sydney’s Births, Deaths and Marriages Registry. Now the wedding was to be organized. Firstly, the young couple get busy with repairing their apartment, and deal with other household needs. All this takes around 14 months. The interesting thing was that during the 14 months Liana lived with her husband at his parents house, the latter always try to hide her presence from others, don’t allow her to answer phone calls, or contact with the members of local Armenian community, explaining these “measures” by the fear that they (the family) will become subject of gossip (among local Arenian community), for Liana lives at their house without getting married in public. Whereas the wedding ceremony was always being postponed due to indefinite reasons. One day Emil tells Liana that they have to undergo medical examination. Liana gets surprised at this request, for before coming to Australia, her and Emil did visit doctors and underwent all the necessary examinations that a to-be couple should undergo in Armenia proper. Anyway, as she was the bride and ought to listen to her husband, Liana and Emil again go to see different doctors. Liana once again gets examined, and, what’s more, during one of the examinations, a liquid was extracted from her spine (presumably spinal cord). The “operation” was very painful, and several days after it Liana feels very weak and dizzy. Liana starts to feel that something is wrong, and that the Melik-Vardanian family hides something from her. Several days after the doctors examined Liana, and the liquid from her spine was extracted, Emil’s parents fly to USA on personal business. Liana hears from someone that her mother-in-law is very sick, and she was in need of an operation. But getting no definite answers, Liana continues living with Emil, finds a job and earns money that the couple spends for everyday needs. Liana told daily Azg that during the 14 months of formal married life her and Emil were happy and spent almost every evening together. Liana was never suspicious why her husband drinks some medicine tabs, or why a liquid from her spine was extracted. Neither she knew why her parents-in-law flew to USA, or why her presence in Sydney was kept secret from the community members. Liana also didn’t know why her husband often flew to USA or Iran, saying he had some business to settle. One day Emil suddenly tells Liana that they must go to Armenia to get married in church, but asks her not to tell anyone about it. Liana, of course, couldn’t hide her happiness and writes about it to her parents. January 9, 2004 Emil and Liana arrive at Zvartnots airport of Yerevan. Apart from Liana’s parents, the couple was welcomed at the airport by the brother of Emil, Henrik, whose presence surprised Emil very much. The brothers go to fetch the suitcases and never return. For four days no news was heard from them, and Liana suffers and thinks of all the possible misfortunes that could happen to her husband. She, together with kinfolk and friends, search for the Melik-Vardanian brothers in all the hospitals, hotels, at the work place of Henrik, where they find out that Henrik doesn’t work there for already half a year. Liana calls Emil’s another brother, Edmond, and his wife, but they say they have no idea where Emil could be either. After searching all the possible places, Liana and her family applies to Zvartnots airport’s transport department to launch an official search. The local police treats Liana very badly, Liana’s comment on their treatment being the following: “Armenia is a place where if you have money you run the show...”, meaning that the police officers weren’t enthusiastic to launch an investigation unless Liana gave them money. Anyway, after several days of search by the Armenian police, a police officer named Garnik, to the surprise of Liana and her family, tells them that that no file showing that Liana and Emil arrived in Armenia ever existed at the airport electronic registration net. Later, January 15, the police reports to Liana that her husband flew back to Sydney, taking with him the documents of Liana, which he had in his hands before going after the suitcases. Several days later Liana checks her e-mail, where she finds Emil’s letter with one word: “Divorce”. “Emil and his family used my faithfulness and naivety”,- writes Liana in her letter to daily Azg. How could a young man brought up in a so-called civilized country treat Liana like this? Melik-Vardanian family would apparently not believe that this story is issued in press. “I write about all this to call upon Armenian young girls to be alert and not trust wolves like Emil who present themselves as pure angels. I adored their family, but their deed tore their mask and showed their real face. Now, when I look back at those 14 months, I realize that all the game was set up by the Melik-Vardanian family from the very beginning. Moreover, before flying to Armenia with Emil, he asked me to transfer some of the money from my account to his. Now, see what kind of people live in Sydney, and be alert...”,- writes Liana. These are the lines that end Liana’s story, one that still has undisclosed details even for herself, to find out which we hope to hear responses from Australian Armenian community or... maybe Emil and his family. So what do you guys think??? Sourse

hyebruin
well it's hard to believe! but not impossible!! many holes in this story! and what exactly is this girls' motivation anyway? it does sound 'sad'...but you never know what's going on!! especially when there are still questions left unanswered such as the spinal tap! CheekY
How could a young man brought up in a so-called civilized country treat Liana like this? even if it's a "civilized" country it doesn't necessarily mean all men are "angels" there heh Edited February 21, 2004 by skittles
allarmeniangirl
OMG. what a bunch of SICK PEOPLE!!! OMG. more than a year it was all planning and planning while Liana was a dummy sitting there and doing what she was told. OMG. I am shocked and angry and just.......ugh, i don't even know what 2 say. Girls need to speak up and if any suspicion or uncomfort arises...Girls need to speak up instead of just letting it pass by. Poor girl Some people really don't have a conscience. angel4hope
i think it was part her fault...if she wasnt so naieve, and dumbo, she coulda seen the clues... i also think it comes from a person's upbringing and cultural issues..it seems like her parents made the decision for her for marrying this man...bayts elli--its sad yet a bit annoying that she missed all those clues. gevo27
i simply am amazed and dont get it.. what was the reason for them to use the girl?
allarmeniangirl
yes.....old traditions do say that the parents decide on their children's (daughters' especially) marriages. Wives are supposed to listen to their husbands and do whatever the husbadns say. This is what gets them(women/girls/wives) in trouble like that. Again.....Women need to SPEAK UP. Independence is important too. Most of me feels more sorry for her than angry though

Anonymouse
Such are the base and ignoble amongst us cloaked with the veneer of 'Australian Armenian family in the Diaspora'. There's more pouches for this familys secrets than there are kangaroos in Australia.

I agree, hyebruin. I am beginning to highly doubt that this story has even 1% validity. It seems too weird and mysterious to be true. Besides, why is there no explanation as to what the whole spine thing was? Surely a good "news" story would have all the details about a case. Sip
Someone explain to me what bad thing was done to this girl other than the special way in which she was dumped? She wasn't raped, she wasn't tortured, she wasn't done any harm to ... she just went to sydney on a long vacation and now she's back home. I can see how she can be pissed knowing how the guy dumped her ... but other than that ... I don't understand what happened.
angel4hope
okay they took her spinal fluid...which is...hmm let me find some info to explain it for you... A spinal tap is a procedure where a special needle is inserted through the vertebrae in the lower back and into the space that surrounds the spinal cord. The space surrounding the brain and spinal cord is filled with cerebral spinal fluid or CSF. The cerebral spinal fluid works like a shock absorber and filter. Who is a candidate for the test? When a person is thought to have a disease or injury that affects the brain, spinal cord, or their protective membranes, a spinal tap may help determine the cause. A spinal tap is a very useful procedure. Healthcare providers use it to: · collect a small sample of a person's CSF · measure the pressure of someone's CSF · deliver medication to a person before and after surgery · inject dye into a person's body. This allows the doctor to take special x-rays of the area surrounding the brain and spinal cord to detect an injury. http://search.yahoo.com/search?p=spinal+fl...-t&cop=mss&tab= thats the site okie?! Would you care to enlighten us dumb asses as to what's so obvious? gevo27
I GIVE UP--- either im missing something here, or you guys are just trying hard at making me look stupid here... Here is the deal.. lol. Angel jan, your getting to uptight about this... Rest of us, as much s we doubt the validity of this story, we can imagine the story this way.. If, this stroy was true in all its entirety, and nothing to exagerated, then we can validate the story as it is... so lets imagine its a valid story.. (for our case) The story consists of a few things that are explained in detail, not much, the story also suggests the girl had no reason for suspicion of the guy and his family. so she never took the time to understand herself why this spinal fluid was extracted from her.. so.. my point is if she hasnt explained such and important issue in her story, and we think still that this story is valid, then she has no clue herself... You never know, if they guy can be so dry as to dump her this way, then they could have as well used her for some scientific research that is actually rather very dangerous.. So the guy gets to hang with this chick for a while, get his own agenda accomplished, something secret i suppose,,,, and the dumped her.. As unvalid as this story sounds, if it were true then this is why.. and how we arent explained what the extraction of the fluid was.. cause im sure if the girl knew, it would be in the story... so, i dont think there is anything to get uptight abot hear, its sad, but yeah they even treated the girl good.. lol.. so she didnt loose much except trust in men!...
