Armen
It's something related to women eating apples
angel4hope
i thought so lol...heres what i thought it was God did NOT say that if Adam disobeyed Him that he would die. Adam and Eve could have eaten what was forbidden unknowingly and the Fall of humankind would have still happened - though with mitigating circumstances. The Fall happened because they ate the forbidden fruit. And so the choice of food is central to the meaning of *Original Sin* -- but many commentators ignore this, and focus only on humankind's disobedience (which is a very important issue). It is as though God was explaining the realities of the Garden to Adam. but people are using it in other situations and its confusing me!! den_wolf
I would HIGHLY recommend that you read Phyllis Trible's "Eve and Adam: Genesis 2-3 Reread." Phyllis Tribble, Andover Newton Quarterly, Vol. 13, © March 1973, pp. 74-83 The original sin was, as Armen said, about eating the forbidden fruit, which resulted in the fall. gurgen
In fact it is nowadays boiled down to this by non-believers: if your papa/mama was bad, then you're bad.
THOTH
I find this concept of original sin (which is such a crock) and the story of Adam & Eve in the Gareden of Eden to be most telling. It is clear that this (so-called) God wished for mankind to be ignorant (non-self aware) - and not only this - but that this God was prohibiting sexual pleasure (again knowledge of such) - and perhaps/likely even the abilty to reproduce independent of the God/gods etc - and that indeed - with the eating of the forbidden fruit (of life) - it is clear that Adam & Eve became aware of each other nakendness - and so we can figure out what they did next.... So in the story we see God lie (as he said that they would surely die if they ate the apple...so who can believe anythign he says now eh?)..and we see that it was the Serpent - indeed - who sides with humanity - and shows respect to humans - that are capable of such knowledge and of knowing pleasure and of deciding things for themselves - including to reproduce and have families...etc - yet the "God" was preventing such - instead wishing for obediant slaves who would totally be under his control...and have no sense of pleasure - or wonder - or independence etc etc (exactly why heaven would be such a boring place...) This is why - to me - the serpent (Enki/Prometheus/THOTH) is the superior diety (if there was such a choice truly available..) "Of every tree of the orchard eat you shall; but of the Tree of Knowing good and evil thou shall not eat of it; for on the day that thou eatest thereof thou shall surely die." "Who told thee that thou are naked? Has thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee not to eat?" "Behold, the Adam has become as one of us, to know good and evil. And now might he not put forth his hand and partake also of the Tree of Life, and eat, and live forever?" (notice that "God" is speaking to his fellows here - eh?) ..and to live forever? How is that? genetically of course....with future generations of offspring...and remember in the bible the term to "know" almost always refers to sex...anyway... Anonymouse
Actually, William Bramley and Zechariah Sitchin have an interested take on the Garden of Eden and the Forbidden Fruit. It goes along the lines of mankind was a slave race created by the Anunnaki, Elohim, plural for Gods in the Bible, and were forbidden to gain the knowledge necessary to realize their slave status, and when they did, they were freed, or so along those lines. My memory is a bit hazy.
sev-mard
Yeah, i've read some things along that line as well. Tough to say how i feel about it. I'm cool with the idea of gods, to a point, but the alien stuff throws me for a loop when I read too much of it.

Arpa
Thoth, once again you stole my thunder. Shame on you! :) The "Original SIN" is a euphemism and an allegory for another three leter word that begins with the letter S. As you mention above God, talking to his equals expresses his consternation that man is poised to be like one of Them. Whereas the idea of creation was that only gods could create and procreate, Adam and Eve, more specifically Eve having partaken of the "tree of knowledge" had jeopardized the privileges of the gods and now she (they) KNEW the secret of creation. Knowledge is another keyword and it is used numerous times as a euphemism for that other three letter S word. Below a few passages. One will find scores of passages using the word in its different forms as "know", "knew" and "knowledge", some as innocent as Adam "knowing" Eve and others not so innocent as in adultery, incest, bestiality and other disgusting senses. The Armeian version of the below verse is; "Yev Adam gittsav ir Eva kin@, ou an hghatsav ou Kayen@ tsnav... "A little 'knowledge' is a dangerous thing"? Give me more!! :) Gen.3 [7] And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons. Gen.4 [1] And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare Cain, and said, I have gotten a man from the LORD. [17] And Cain knew his wife; and she conceived, and bare Enoch: and he builded a city, and called the name of the city, after the name of his son, Enoch. [25] And Adam knew his wife again; and she bare a son, and called his name Seth: For God, said she, hath appointed me another seed instead of Abel, whom Cain slew. ========= Gen.2 [9] And out of the ground made the LORD God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil. [17] But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that
