Twilight Bark
If there was no Armenian genocide, the Turkish republic would not exist, if it were to exist, it would be insignificant compared to what it is now ... the Turkish republic on the other hand was founded on the ashes of an exterminated people... from top to bottom a new republic was build, and its construction was made possible by the destruction of a people. I must disagree on this one, Domino. It sounds like it was a case of "self-defense": "We had to do it to survive". One can construct many scenarios in which a genocide would not occur, and a mainly Turkish, and much healthier, republic would emerge, with or without a sizable Armenian minority. In the worst case, a "population exchange" akin to that with Greece could be done. And East Anatolia (and we are at worst considering a small portion of that economically insignificant piece of relatively unattractive land "lost" to an independent Armenia) is not, and has not been, needed by Turkey for anything other than satisfying a sick preoccupation with maximizing the country's land at almost any cost. The genocide did not need to happen for the emergence of a healthy, viable Turkey. In fact, I am convinced the opposite is true. But I don't want to dwell on this issue much, because I don't have the time, and more relevantly, because such soul-searching about the origins of their republic belongs more in a Turkish forum than an Armenian one. Vigil
I agree with you Domino, but sooner or later they have to fess up to it because they are changing history...there is no way you can write 2 versions of the story and the west is slowly intigrating the genocide into its history books, which will ultimitly force Turkey to accept the genocide in an attempt to become "westernized". But then again Turkish people are kind of nationalistic and I think they might actually continue to live a lie. You can just tell how much the nationalistic ideas have gone to their heads if you just go to Turkey.com and check out the forum's history section. Last time I was there they were claiming that Turks are descendents from Cimarians or Scythians. Edited May 31, 2004 by Vigil
