Dan
Voting doesn't solve anything. If anything, bigger government, welfarism, breeds more crime. OK, Mr. know-it-all.... I will not argue with you because I don't think you're worth my time...
Dan
Um, no you're wrong. I live in the city and I've been to the outskirts of it, and I've seen worse in the city than outside. My opinion vs your opinion, how is it wrong? What makes YOU right if it's only a matter of opinions? Eh, Mr. know-it-all? So you might suggest people who would like to bear children in a safe environment until things are cleaned up, then? eh? Sorry I don't understand what you're asking, because there is no active verb in the sentence. My bad if I just can't get the meaning behind it. Sorry.. What I am saying is that instead of just giving up and saying that you can move out of the city if you want to raise your kids in a safe environment, we should try and solve the problem, because if everyone thought like that and moved out of the city, the place they are moving out to would become the same. It's not like it's gonna disappear. My idea of a solution would be introducing tougher gun ownership laws, etc. Make the price of one bullet $5000, and see if someone will go and buy it to randomly shoot around and kill someone they don't know just for the fun of it. Of course, then there would be the illegal bullet market, but how many teenagers would go to the black market just to get a bullet and kill someone with it? If it's available, people will get it, but if it's not, probably 75% of those who do get them will not make the extra effort and go underground to get it... Dan
I need a gun so I can protect myself from dirty cats that come to steal my milk. mmhmm... but assuming that you DO make sense and are speaking metaphorically... you DO know that it's a criminal offense to shoot someone or to shoot at someone, don't you? So what's the point of having a gun then? I don't see how regular citizens need to have a gun, unless the sensitive nature of their work/job requires/recommends that they have it... Sip
Even in the city ... when you hold a gun in your hand, then you know how God must feel when he is holding a gun in his hands ... that's a little quote from our buddy Homer Simpson. I probably wouldn't apply to get a conealed carry permit even if they allowed it here in Wisconsin but I certainly don't mind having mine around at home. Even though I have nothing really that may be worth stealing, at least I'll be able to greet unwanted "guests" properly ... see the thing is, the bad guys are going to have guns ... regular people having guns just levels the playing field a bit. hyebruin
I've been doing a lot of thinking lately about life (Well, more so then usual.) How it's full of nothing but crime and hate. Where you can't let your kids play free outside without adult supervision. The sad part is that it's getting worse and worse each year. Who knows how bad it would be 20 years from now. Now my question is, would it be selfish of us to bring kids into this world. A world that's full of crime... Edit* Why or why not... very good point extra!! awesome point you brought up!--all parents love their children but don't have the wisdom nor the god like power to protect them from harm and pain 100%!! yes!! i DO believe it is a selfish reason for people to want to have kids, but so is sex! --it's in our genetic blueprint to want to...well, get laid! and why is sex such a big drive? because we are programmed to have offspring that way (whether we consciously want to or not!) so that we perpetuate this thing called the human race!---that's only the biology of it, of course responsible people use protection and others who just bang for the fun of it get pregnant and leave it up to the rest of us taxpayers to pay for every last *&^%$# thing that they or their child need!! i'm ALL in support of helping children and the disabled, but when dumbass people further burden the society because they don't have the brains to get a grip on their irresponsible sexual behavior!! now THAT really makes me mad!! also it makes me mad not just for us 'virtual parents' as i like to call it..but also the poor kid's future and quality of life, who was brought into this world by a bunch of losers!! <_< also people don't want to get old and be lonely at the same time!! or even be young and be lonely...??!!! they want someone to love and someone who will love them back...that's all good if they have the financial and the emotional and physical means to care for the child...but still many things can go wrong! what if something happens to the parent? what then? the kid will be placed in foster families...not to mention all the emotional pain of the loss of the parent...and kids are too young and naive to have the skills to be able to cope with tragedy and grief and big change... the way i see it, it's like throwing someone into the ocean who doesn't know how to swim and hope, just hope that they don't sink and drown and know how to get help! sorry about the gloomy outlook! but i do see this especially in the poorer neighborhoods and it is reality for many children...not everyone has the financial stability and the certain guarantees in life that people like paris hilton do! So what's the point of having a gun then? I don't see how regular citizens need to have a gun, unless the sensitive nature of their work/job requires/recommends that they have it... Of course it is a criminal offense to shoot someone. I will not knowingly go around shoot anyone. My gun will be to protect my life and property. If someone tramples over it, I will react with force. Think of it this way, the government criminalizes individuals for murder, theft, yet it itself engages in the same things. Surely at some point we have to ask ourselves about this funny nature of morality where the government can do no wrong. And if a government engages in such behavior, why would it be safe for the same entity to judge me for my crime? Essentially this is the paradox of Leviathan. Dan
see the thing is, the bad guys are going to have guns ... regular people having guns just levels the playing field a bit. yes, but having guns to solve the gun violence problem is very uhhh let's just say hypocritical... not to mention, it doesn't solve anything lol... instead, working on getting the guns away from the bad people would be a good thing to do... and in the meantime, i'm not sure if it's that bad a situation.. i mean, toronto is probably the worst city with regards to gangs and gun violence, etc., but it's still a relatively safe place...... unless you're looking/asking for trouble (e.g. women walking alone at like 2 am), it rarely gets to you, especially if your kids are very young (below the age of 5, or for older kids, try not to dress the female kids as if they are ready to get married, that's definitely an invitation for pedophiles.... )... on that note (i.e. safety, etc.), i was walking home at about 3 am once, since i had just caught the last subway train to the station nearest to my place, and had to walk a distance of like 20 minutes cos the buses were out of service -- so anyhow, i was met with like 3 guys (each one of them twice my size lol...), and they stopped me. i was smoking a cig.. and i knew they were looking for trouble, and they looked drunk and high.. so one of them asked me for a cigarette.. now in a situation when the person had a gun, they would probably say "f*** off" cos they knew they would be able to defend themselves [not for the 1 cig, that's not worth like 10 cents even lol].. and that would've probably created problems (who knows, maybe they had guns too..).. so i told him yeah, sure, and gave him one, then asked the other guys if they wanted one too.. so one of the guys took one and the other one said he didn't smoke... and i told them, "be safe fellows. i'll see ya around" because they didn't seem like they were just gonna walk away, and smiled at them and started walking away, looked back and saw them standing there looking at me, and i waved at them and continued on.. they just stood there.. lol.. i don't know.. but i think if i had had a gun, the situation would've been a lot different because of my different attitude. And anonymouse... i am not talking about morality or anything of the sort. i am talking about practical things.. but at any rate.. so if the government is guilty of criminal activity, would the decriminalisation of criminal activity for the general public be a justifiable thing to do? a sane thing to do? you might have a whole lotta knowledge from books and bring them into every single argument/debate about moral issues (i.e. bookish lol), it doesn't follow that following a certain moralist's view or theory or concept would lead us to a favourable position.... at any rate, the theory of morality and the practice/application of it are two different things, the difference between them probably like that of day and night.. Azat
Every family by law is forced to own a gun in Switzerland. Question: can you please name a country with one of the lowest crime rate and murder rate in the world?
angel4hope
this world is a very sad and scarry place, nothing and noone is as they seem, and everything is more complicated than usual, we as human beings have the innate ability to complicate the simple truth and to simplify the complicated truth, whether one way or the other, everything is a juble of preplexity and emotion~you just gotta learn how to live with what oddities life throws in your face and learn how to as for more... Dan
The country has a population of six million, but there are estimated to be at least two million publicly-owned firearms, including about 600,000 automatic rifles and 500,000 pistols. Azat, maybe because the population of Switzerland is not as belligerent as the population of USA/Canada? Question: Can you please tell me who commits the most crimes in USA/Canada? i.e. which visible group(s)? And also, do tell me if those groups/ethnicities are present in Switzerland in massive numbers... And to answer your question, Norway probably has the lowest crime rate in the world.. Here's a link: http://www.vixpy.demon.co.uk/gun/articles/tun.htm I mean... it's not like you can get a shotgun in Norway when you're 15 years old, and go around and shoot randomly and injure a 6 year old kid who happened to be walking home with his mom (this happened here in Toronto).... How can everything be more complicated than usual? ... everything is a juble of preplexity and emotion~you just gotta learn how to live with what oddities life throws in your face ... Sip
i just wanted people to take what i sy seriuosly Very good ... That's what I like to hear. Your post had a very dark, somber, and depressing tone to it. All I was trying to point out is that the world seeming "a very sad and scarry place" and "everything seeming more complicated than usual" indicate to me that your perception of how things are in general may be biased. Sometimes we let the pressures of things around us cloud our judgement about how the world really is. Sometimes things are just not going well ... sometimes bad things happen ... sometimes people do bad things to us ... heck I have had a lot of those kinds of days myself. But we shouldn't let that cloud our judgement into thinking the whole world is a complete mess. A similar phenomenon happened with 9/11. People were so caught up with the "trajedy" that they lost sense of reason and many started to see the world as a much much darker place than it actually was/is. angel4hope
I totally agree sip, i am a rather optimistic person in bad situations i try to see the good and not get depressed, but what i was getting at is the reason the world is a scarry and sad place-according to some situations that people listed above-maybe i was beign too general here. Okay, so i was trying to say that its okay because we as humans are always searching fopr truth and understanding and in the process of doing so sometimes we tend to complicate simple situations and at other times when given a complicated situation we are easily able to simplify it and solve it to the best of our abilities and knowledge.....get it? got it? good!
