Arpa Posted December 26, 2003 Report Share Posted December 26, 2003 (edited) Tragic news. An earthquake of 6+ magnitude at Bam, Iran. Upward of 20 thousand may have perished. Very sad. I had never heard of Bam before. News of the sort always gets us back to 1988 Spitak and Gumri. With all due respects one wonders if a tragedy of the sort will cause the virtual wall around Tehran and Iran to collapse. We remember how the Eathquake in Armenia acted as a catalyst for the fall of the Iron Curtain as it was the first time in history when world news media penetrated where they had never been before, exposing how the SU was rotten at the foundations. What we need are buildings in a KNOWN earthquake zone which will endure an earthquake without collapsing. No more black-market selling of cement in Armenia. Even 2,000 year old buildings can be reinforced against earthquakes. I saw Yerevan and Gyumri after the 1988 earthquake. Most of the Czarist era buildings were still standing. angel4hope Posted December 27, 2003 Report Share Posted December 27, 2003 (edited) just as they say Armenian politics is of a democracy so is the notion that any armenian governmental official will look beyond their selfish motives of stuffing their own pockets and as a change-for once in their political career think about the people~if you truely believe that the armenian government is going to actually do something for the people without first looking out for thickening their adipose diposits in their thick heads-then my friend you are really as they say ~stuck in quicksand and reaching for the stars~think realistically, armenia has improved from the late 80's early 90's-but due to what?there aer still many suffering from hunger and many orphans in the streets,maybe as much in the city as much as in the villages and countryside---politics is screwed no matter what country you live in its a strive for power and money-not a charity for the needy or a democracy at all-but a way for the more educated wealthy elite to control the rest of the population! in my opinion!
