gamavor
Sergej, I see you have keen interest in Bible and various translations. Here is a quote from a member that we all miss a lot, of a discussion long time ago. Lets hear your opionion too. "From the beginning was the word, the word was with God and the word was God". Iranyar joon, There is a very interesting difference in the Armenian and Greek traslations of this passage compared to English and all the other languages. In Armenian "the word" is translated as "ban", and it's not meaning "word". It is something more sensible than "word". To give you the meaning of its Armenian traslation I'll have to combine "thing-word-eternity-work-activity-it". And in Armenian it doesn't sound indefinite. In Greek too, they use "logos" for translation. I don't know how is it in Jewish, but English sounds poor http://armenians.com/forum/index.php?showt...&hl=logos&st=20 What is more interesting is that in English " The Word" is meant to be written "Word", while Slavonic translation uses the word "Slovo", which means, something spoken, said or simply - speech. gamavor
Armen, don't be surprised! In the New Oxford Annotated Bible with the Apocrypha, Edited by Herbert G. May and Bruce M. Metzger, Page 1286, The Gospels according to John in the footnotes you can read: "The Word (Greek "logos") of God is more than speech; it is God in action, creating, revealing, redeeming. " Btw, this year is proclaimed as the year of the Holy Translators in the Armenian Church. The Armenian translation of the Bible is Indeed the Queen of all translations. Armen
Interesting Gams, so they know now. But for centuries millions of English speaking peoples have been understanding it a as "word". What is more interesting, there is no such a word in English or Russian language and they can't invent it.
Ludwig9
Interesting Gams, so they know now. But for centuries millions of English speaking peoples have been understanding it a as "word". What is more interesting, there is no such a word in English or Russian language and they can't invent it. style_images/master/snapback.png Classical Armenian is also referred to by scholars when studying the bible to better understand verses. In Classical Armenian the "word" is John 1:1 is ban or pan depending on your phonetics. The word - ban,pan - has a flexible variance which is not limited to the word - "word". In John 1:1, John basically states the Word, which is Christ, is God. John does not give a chronology or prophecy to introduce Christ as in the other Gospels, he starts with saying that Christ is God from verse 1.
