Armen
The string instruments and that "coin" sound in the background make it sound more Arabic than Armenian.
Armo77
The string instruments and that "coin" sound in the background make it sound more Arabic than Armenian.Have you listened to much Armenian music from Lebanon? Also Armenian music from Iran sounds more Persian than Armenian.. And Richard Hagopian.. He was born and raised in the USA yet his music is Kurdish or Assyrian sounding.. I like it though. Armo77
Speaking of String Instruments... Can anyone play the Oud? My grandfather can play it pretty good and plays during family gatherings.

But there was a female singer (forgot her name) who sounded very Armenian, probably because the background was piano, electric guitars and drums. You're right, Richard Hagopian sounds Middle Eastern. The drumer uses Arabic drum and rythm.I don't like this sound because, in my opinion, if there are no zourna and dhol in Kochari, Gorani, Yarkhushta or any other dance of that kind the whole noise and excitement is gone. String insruments make them sound "sweet" and Eastern.
Armo77
Well it is rather difficult to keep our lovely Armenian music from sounding "middle Eastern" due to the fact that we are neighbors with many of these Middle Eastern Countries. Armen
We should try. In Armenia in early 90's nobody could tell wheather Aram Asatrian's music is Armenian or something else. Now it's obvious that mostly he sings Turkish, Azeri and Arabic songs translated into Armenia. And I always wondered as to why Azeries say that we have stolen there music. Now it's clear that the people like Asatrian are the reason. We have Sayat-Nova, horovels, the Mush-Sasun-Bitlis dances and songs and many more and still people listen that mutations.Mixture and synthesis is good but we should look at the results. E.g. the mixture of the Armenian and Georgian music has produced the Shalakho, Kintauri which have very local sound because they use local instruments. Armo77
Whats your view on Nune Yesayan's music? Also, how do you feel about Andy Madadian? Edited December 10, 2003 by Armo77
Armen
Nune I think her pop versions of Sayat Nova (like Tamam Ashkhar etc.) are so far the best. However if you want classic zhoghovrdakan performance Gourgen Dabaghyan's performance is better. There is one song of Nune I like the most, but not the whole song. It's called "Hala, Hala" and she sings it in Musa Ler dialect (muxture of Armenian, Assirian and Kurdish). The first part of the song sounds Kurdish.I like second part of the song (where she goes "...Akh yogumnu, yogumnu..." or something like that) and the zournas. Check it out, it's on the link. I have listened to some of Andy's Persian music back in Armenia, but didn't have time to get his Armenian CD. Do you know if I cound get it in mp3s?From Farsi music I like the music of Pamir (Tajikisatan). Have you heard of Dalyar Nazar? He's a Pamirian singer. Daniel-Palu
good song.....i've heard this song many times but not in armenian but in syriac and kurdish...but the "ha nina" is still there:D
Դրօ
I believe Andre's Ha Nino is the best. Unlike Aram Asatrian, Andre's is Armenian; purely and authentically. It even sounds the best. Armenian music is excellent. Why are there singers who sing in other cultures' styles when we have one of the best? Because of them, our music would sound Middle Eastern when our culture is really not at all like that.

First of all, most of Aram Asatrian songs are authored and are Armenian, there are some only that are in fact turkish, besides every armenian pop singer has turkish songs, even Harout Pamboukjian. Harout even has the same "klklots" as Aram but no one wants to talk about him (I know why ... talk about having connections lol). As for Sayat Nova...I don't understand why we're qualifying Aram's music as azeri or watever, when Sayat-Nova's music is also non-Armenian considering the melody, its just that these songs are presented in a traditional armenian folkloric fashion, hence making it sound armenian when its not purely armenian...i'm sure Sayat-Nova would say so himself

Aram Asatrian is not a professional singer and has no understanding of music whatsoever. Sayat Nova on the other hand was an Ashugh/Gusan, which meant that he had to write the song, the poetry for the lyrics and be able to play an instrument to accomodate the song. I would really love to see one of our so called "stars" try to do that.
MosJan
Sasuntrsi jan Aram Astaryan also has the Order of Gusan from Government of Armenia as for him playing any instruments sorry don;t know if he can or not understanding - he sure has an under$tanding of what public is looking for No need to compare Aram Asatrian to Sayat Nova / only the time will show if Arams songs will stay w/it's people

hayemyes
i realize very well aram asatrian is not and SHOULD not be compared to sayat-nova...being a musician myself, i understand that each of them has a different style and fall in different categories...i was just trying to point out, that sayat-nova's music isnt purely armenian either in response to someone else's comment about sayat-nova... my aram asatrian statement had nothing to do with sayat-nova, and in case u didn't notice there was an "As for Sayat-Nova" in the beginning of my NEW paragraph about sayat-nova i just meant to point out that it's fun naming names and sayin this singer or that singer doesnt sing armenian, sings azeri this that, but we have to be down to earth and realize some of the music we classify as traditional or folkloric armenian isnt so after all... again no comparison between aram and sayat nova
