Paris Olympics: Wrestler Saravi bags first gold for Iran, beats Armenian Olympic champ

 

Mohammad Hadi Saravi defeated his Armenian opponent and former Olympic and world champion Artur Aleksanyan in the finals of Greco-Roman 97kg at the Paris Olympics to win the first gold medal for Iran.

Despite initially trailing 0-1, Saravi delivered a solid performance to secure a 4-1 win in a tough match on Wednesday. 

He advanced to the finals after a decisive 6-0 victory over his Egyptian opponent, Mohamed Gabr, in the 97-kg category on Tuesday.

In the first round, Saravi overpowered Joseph Rau from the United States with a decisive 10-1 victory.

He continued his dominant run in the quarterfinals, easily dispatching Kyrgyzstan's Uzur Dzhuzupbekov with a flawless 8-0 score, securing his spot in the semi-finals

Saravi previously won the gold medal in the 97-kg category at the 2021 World Wrestling Championships in Oslo, Norway, and a bronze medal in the same category at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan. 

Saravi’s gold medal has helped Iran climb to the 40th position in the Olympic rankings.

So far, Iranian athletes have earned two other medals, both bronze, won by taekwondo athlete Mobina Nematzadeh and Greco-Roman wrestler Amin Mirzazadeh.

Paris 2024: Armenia's Artur Aleksanyan is awarded Olympic silver medal but takes it off immediately

 

 

Men's Greco-Roman Wrestling 97kg weight class award ceremony was held at the Paris Olympic Games.

Olympic gold, silver, and bronze medalist Artur Aleksanyan of Armenia was awarded his fourth Olympic—silver—medal.
The President of United World Wrestling, Nenad Lalovic, awarded Aleksanyan and put the silver medal around his neck. After being awarded, however, Aleksanyan removed the silver medal. After awarding the gold medalist, Mohammadhadi Saravi (Iran), Lalovic approached Aleksanyan and asked why he took the medal off. Aleksanyan said something in response, pointing his hand towards the wrestling mat. Artur Aleksanyan kept the silver medal in his hand until the end of the award ceremony.

 

And at the end, when everyone had to take a group photo, Aleksanyan got down from the podium and approached Lalovic.

Armenia's Olympic champion had lost 1-4 to Iran's Mohammadhadi Saravi in the final of the Men's Greco-Roman Wrestling 97kg category at the Paris Olympics. In the match, Saravi had pushed Aleksanyan with his foot—which is not allowed in Greco-Roman wrestling—and performed a two-point move. Artur had requested a challenge, but the referees had deemed the challenge unsuccessful.

 

At the award ceremony, Artur Aleksanyan removed the silver medal from his neck and showed that he does not agree with the aforesaid decision of the referees and his defeat.

Armenia’s Artur Aleksanyan, who won a silver medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics, has spoken out for the first time since his defeat in the Men’s Greco-Roman (97 kg) wrestling final, reports Armenpress. The judges scored the match 4-1 (technical scores) in favor of Aleksanyan’s opponent, Iran’s Mohammad Hadi Saravi, who was awarded the gold medal.

Speaking to reporters, Aleksanyan claimed that the referees were biased against him during the final match, failing to penalize his opponent for a blatant rule violation. He was visibly upset during the award ceremony & removed his silver medal as a sign of protest.

“I came here for gold, but everyone saw what happened during my match,” he stated. “At one point, the Iranian wrestler was outside the mat with both legs. I noticed it & told the coaches to challenge. If you go out with both legs, I should have been awarded one point, but instead, they gave two points to the Iranian athlete, plus an additional point for the challenge. Everyone is asking me why I took off the medal—this is why! That one point should have been mine, and the final score should have been 2-1 in my favor.”

He continued, “I am confident that the point in that incident should have been mine. In tournaments like this, especially in the final, even the smallest details can make a significant difference.”

Aleksanyan voiced his deep disappointment over the “injustices” he experienced, highlighting similar biases against fellow Armenian wrestlers Slavik Galstyan & Arsen Harutyunyan in their matches.

In response to the outcome, Armenia’s Deputy Minister of Education, Science, Culture, and Sports, Karen Giloyan, stated that the Armenian government would support the appeal process.

Armenia’s National Olympic Committee has backed Aleksanyan’s claim & has filed an appeal with the International Olympic Committee. The Armenian Wrestling Federation has also filed an appeal, citing bias against Aleksanyan during the final match.

YEREVAN, AUGUST 9, ARMENPRESS. The Armenian Wrestling Federation has filed a complaint against the controversial ruling of the Aleksanyan-Saravi men’s wrestling final.

The Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sport said on August 9 that the complaint has been filed.

Deputy Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sport Karen Giloyan said that the Armenian Government will also join the complaint procedure.

“We are waiting for a written response, which will be attached to the complaint by the Armenian National Olympic Committee and sent to the relevant authorities. I assure everyone that we will try to restore justice,” Giloyan said.

The judge scored the match 4:1 in favor of Iran’s Mohammadhadi Saravi. Armenia’s Aleksanyan was awarded the silver medal. Aleksanyan said he was robbed of gold as a result of refereeing injustice.

Armenia ends Paris Olympics with 4 medals in total

PanARMENIAN.Net - Armenia sent 15 athletes to the Paris Olympics and won 4 medals in total.

Gymnast Artur Davtyan, Greco-Roman wrestler Artur Aleksanyan, weightlifter Varazdat Lalayan won a silver medal each, while Greco-Roman wrestler Malkhas Amoyan secured bronze.

The United States and China, meanwhile, ended the Paris Olympics with 40 gold medals each, NBC reports.

The U.S. won the total medal count with 126 (40 gold, 44 silver, and 42 bronze). China came in second in the total medal race with 91 (40 gold, 27 silver, and 24 bronze).

Aleksanyan says was robbed of Olympic gold at wrestling finals

PanARMENIAN.Net - Team Armenia’s Artur Aleksanyan has spoken out for the first time after his controversial defeat in the final bout of the 97kg Men’s Greco-Roman Wrestling event at the Paris Olympics.

The judge scored the fight 4:1 (technical scores) in favor of Aleksanyan’s rival, Iran’s Mohammad Hadi Saravi, who was awarded the gold medal.

The Armenian athlete was awarded silver. Visibly upset, he took off the medal at the awarding ceremony as a sign of protest.

“I came here for gold,” Aleksanyan told reporters Friday, August 9, according to Armenpress.

“But during the match you all saw what happened. At one point the Iranian wrestler was outside the mat with both legs. I saw that moment and I myself told the coaches to challenge. If you go out with both legs, I should have been rewarded one point. But instead, they gave two points to the Iranian athlete, and added one more for the challenge. Everyone is asking me why I took off the medal, this is why! That one point was supposed to be mine and the final score was supposed to be 2:1 in my favor,” Aleksanyan said, adding that he is disappointed by “refereeing injustice.”

He said he is uncertain about his future, but added “I am very disappointed by these injustices. I will remain in wrestling. I hope justice will be restored.”

The 2016 Olympic gold winner added that he has noticed similar injustice against fellow Armenian wrestler Slavik Galstyan, which makes him believe that there were some "tensions" against the Armenian team.

Aleksanyan also thanked the Armenian fans who were present in the arena.

The Aleksanyan-Saravi match was referred by Ferenc Gyarmati (Romania). The judge was Nedyalko Kirov Kireziev of Bulgaria, and the Mat Chairman was Stanislav Sernek of Slovenia.

PARIS, AUGUST 12, ARMENPRESS. The Armenian National Olympic Committee has appealed the Aleksanyan-Saravi wrestling match ruling to the International Olympic Committee.

Deputy Minister of Sport of Armenia Karen Giloyan told reporters that the United World Wrestling, in written answers, has claimed that the referees made the right decision. “But we are 100 percent right, this is a fact,” Giloyan said. “The National Olympic Committee of Armenia, attaching the complaint of the Armenian Wrestling Federation, and the answer of the United World Wrestling, has appealed to the appeals commission of the International Olympic Committee,” Giloyan said.

“We had cases during the Olympic Games where similar episodes in other matches were treated very differently. We are more than convinced that Artur Aleksanyan wasn’t supposed to lose this match. Let the appeals commission decide. We are going to demand our gold medal until the end, until the very last authority, until Lausanne,” he said, referring to the seat of the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

The judge scored the 97kg Men’s Greco-Roman Wrestling final match 4:1 in favor of Iran’s Mohammadhadi Saravi. Armenia’s Aleksanyan was awarded the silver medal. Aleksanyan said he was robbed of gold as a result of refereeing injustice.

At close of 2024 Olympics, Christian Solidarity International urges the IOC to “live up to its own values”

Following the closing ceremony of the Paris Games, John Eibner, the president of Christian Solidarity International, on Sunday criticized the International Olympic Committee for “providing political support for the perpetrators” of the ethnic cleansing of Nagorno Karabakh.

In June, CSI launched a campaign to #BanAzerbaijan from the 2024 Paris Games. The campaign was in response to the ethnic cleansing of Nagorno Karabakh’s ancient Armenian Christian population last September, in a military campaign ordered by the president of Azerbaijan’s national Olympic committee, who is also the dictator of Azerbaijan – Ilham Aliyev.

Despite the IOC’s public commitment to “promoting human rights through sport,” and its decision to ban the Russian and Belarusian national teams from participating in the Paris Games over Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the IOC did not take any action against Azerbaijan after its ethnic cleansing campaign in Nagorno Karabakh.

On August 2, David MacLeod, the IOC’s director of national Olympic committee relations, wrote to Azerbaijan’s ministry of sport and its national Olympic committee, apologizing for a presenter from France 2 Television who referred to “the fall of Nagorno Karabakh” during the entry of the Armenian team. MacLeod assured Azerbaijan that “clear indications have been delivered to avoid any future references using similar terms.”

“It is clear from this message that the IOC is using its influence to cover up the Aliyev regime’s atrocity crimes in Nagorno Karabakh,” Eibner said. “It is a shameful indication of the IOC’s true priorities.”

“CSI will continue to campaign for accountability for the architects of the Karabakh Genocide, for the right of Karabakh Armenians to return to their homeland and live there in freedom, and for the freedom of Armenian hostagesstill held by Azerbaijan, such as Vicken Euljekjian, Ruben Vardanyan, and David Babayan,” Eibner pledged.

Eibner concluded by calling on Bach to “live up to your own values of Olympism, to reject the influence of malign, racist, anti-Christian dictatorships within the Olympic system, and to adopt a consistent approach to promoting human rights through sport.”

Armenia’s Elina Avanesyan Defeats World No. 11 Jelena Ostapenko At Cincinnati Open, Advances To Round Of 16
