DominO123
Prejudice makes you dumb? To the list of arguments against prejudice, scientists now add a new one: Racism can make you stupid, reports The Boston Globe. "That is the message of an unusual and striking new series of experiments conducted at Dartmouth College, with the help of brain-imaging equipment and a crew of undergraduate volunteers. According to the findings, the more biased people are, the more their brain power is taxed by contact with someone of another race, as they struggle not to say anything offensive. The effect is so strong, the team found, that even a five-minute conversation with a black person left some of the white subjects unable to perform well on a test of cognitive ability. The Globe and Mail: Monday, November 24, 2003 - Page A14 To tell the truth, that doesn't surprises me a bit. Any comment?
Sip
Sometimes that's not because the white is "racist" per se, but maybe because there are so many taboos on so many things ... can't say this, can't say that, can't make this kind of inference, can't make that kind of inference ... so that does make sense that people would get nervous up to a point of panicing trying not to say the "wrong" thing. Sasun
Interesting. It also depends what questions they were asked.
sev-mard
Yeah but if normal people were more "aware" of other groups, cultures, religions, they'd know certain things shouldn't be said/done and Life would be more stress free. It's their own ignorance that adds to racism, and stupidity as the article shows.
DominO123
Yeh! True, what is funny, is that with my black friends I will make any comments, they don't care, neither I care when they do remarks on the whites, because we know they are jokes, but I won,t make those comments to strangers, but I do not force myself to resist to an impusle to say something, because of that sometimes I will tell something and they will get offensed(those that are not my friends) because they will interprate it all wrong. But this study go beyond that I believe, and beyond that is racism. Edited November 25, 2003 by Fadix
sev-mard
Well to me it not about the urge to hold back, because i dont' feel like making negative comments about jermadz ppl, but i do joke about them. But if you're really racist and hate somebody else, it's going to be hard to deal with them I don't care how hard you try. I know ppl see me in a million different lights because of my skin, so I try not to do the same. I give everyone a chance and deal with their reaction accordingly. I didn't know there are jokes about white people. If you don't mind can you tell a few in the humor section?

sev-mard
I'm not big on 'jokes' in their purest form per se, but mostly witty observations on the attitudes & actions of them. Very true Bruin-jan, Ignorance seeps into a persons being and affects all that they do. I'm just about being informed, and willingness to seek information. If you don't know about a certain race or group, don't have any contact with them, how can you hate ALL of them? Ppl are fooled by media, led by ancient traditions and clouded by lack of information. You'll never catch me 'hating' someone, or something I don't at least know about first hand.
hyebruin
this is my take on "hate/hating"...most common reason is plain ignorance...we fear what/who we don't know and develop feelings of dislike or hate which can be overcome by looking at people as individuals rather than on a mass basis and learn what is unique about them... another reason for "hate" can be ignited towards someone who is totally mean, inconsiderate and unkind...what i've learned though is that these people are soooo miserable deep inside that whatever they say or do is just a direct reflection of the amount of pain and SELF-LOATHING they're going through...so best way to deal with these people is to just have empathy and not take what they say or do seriously or personally... see?? so there is no reason to hate!
