O Assimilate Or Not To Assimilate That Is The Ques

Sip you are missing the point of this forum. We are being jumped on because we didn't assimilate. You want Armenians to assimilate thats your oppinion but as long as there are sell out Armenians like you and MJ around, there will always be true Armenians like us to defend our people from being wiped out. And like we said to Tutonic Knight, this can be handled offline if you wish. Edited by Garo

Two times they took me for German, although I don't think I look German. One time for Danish. Another time one of those tourist's guys stopped me on the street and started talking to me in Italian, and was shocked that I'm not Italian. The closest was an Indian guy, street vendor who was 100% sure that I'm Greek. :)

I get mistaken for Greek sometimes...sometimes Italian. I have also been mistaken for Hispanic.

It's great. They'll look at me, won't be able to quite place my looks, then enquire about my ethnic background. Happens all the time.

I like it.

Those that are assimilated or propose assimilation should be turned over to a special court, or just be shot. We cannot afford to lose people.

A patriotic Armenian even after six generations, inter-marriages, loss of language and other elements of culture, no interest in the country proper, no knowledge of basic history is a real proposition. A lahmajun Armenian, you can always re-heat it, but it gets harder every time.

Um, ok. I'm half Armenian. Does that make me an otar? I only know a little Armenian. That is hardly my own fault. My father wouldn't teach it to me. I'm interested in Armenia, in my history, in my culture, and I learn more about it all the time. I plan to go to Armenia soon to live.

Why are you dissing me? Can't Armenia use all the Armenians they can get?

My neighbour in Armenia is half-Russian half-German. Her mother and father have lived in Armenia since 1960s, she was born in Armenia and she considers herself an Armenian.

I think even now, when there is a Republic of Armenia, we Armenians refuse to accept metally that we have a state. Because if we accept it there would be 2 kinds of Armenians. First, the citizents of Armenia, second all those who consider theselves Armenian. And because you can't refuse someones identity based on citizenship, it all boils down to who considers himself to ba an Armenian.

I don't see why that's a big deal. Case in point: There's a country called Italy, peopled with Italians. There are Italians that immigrated to America and Canada and other places. The Italian-Americans are proud of being Italian, and there's a whole range as to how much Italian language and culture they as individuals have. Does that make them unItalian? No. Does that make them Italian citizens, either? No to that too. It would probably be easier to become an Italian citizen if you're Italian-American, though.

I know that Greece will give you dual citizenship if you're half Greek, or Greek-descended. Don't know if Armenia does the same.

I think Armenia should do what Israel does and grant quick citizenship to Diasporan Armenians, since it can use the skills and money of us Diasporans. A state is made stronger by immigration, after all (unless the immigrants are hugely different in culture.)

Just IMHO.

I agree 100% with both of you Armen and Anaheet on the citizenship issues as well as who should be considered Armenian.

Thanks Azat. My father is a ParskaHai, but he never taught me the language- I had to learn it higgeldy-piggeldy from my relatives. So I'm picking up a little bit here and a little bit there. In fact, I learned the word ParskaHai from one of his cousins.

I guess you could say I'm trying to "de-assimilate." I didn't have any choice in the matter as a child. My family are the only Armenians I know. There are not a whole lot where I live, and apparently the ones there are speak a different dialect from my dad's family (Western as opposed to Eastern Armenia). Also, my dad was not very well educated in Armenian, so he gets embarrassed, I guess. Of course, he made things even worse for me, not having been educated in Armenian at all!

One of my life goals is to go to Armenia for a year or three and really get fluent in the language and learn everything there is to learn about being Armenian.

My cousin is 100% Hye and he could care less. Who's the better Armenian?

My license plate says HAI EM. And it's true.

Not likely to happen though. Diasporan Armenians will have too many undesirable attitudes, like wanting democracy and dislikeing corruption.
