Arpa
[/b]QUOTE (axel @ Aug 25 2003, 02:44 PM) Where did you get that from? I think you did not understand my point if this is how you interpreted my post. Nor do you understand MJ's spirit. I took the said quote from another subject topic, namely "MJ's Article" therefor I may post this under that topic too.In the meantime, since it is once again taking the nature of religion, I'll leave it her as well.Wher did I get it?You may have alluded to the fact that MJ does not profess to subscribe to any organized religion, neither do I. I have been simultaneously labeled an atheist and "the best Christian ever". You interpret it for whatever it is worth. Some of our correspondents remind of that professor of biophysics from Stepanakert/Yerevan, who, whatever the subject may have been told me in consecutive sentences that he was an atheist and then added that he could not imagine any Armenian who did not subscribe to the CHRISTIAN Armenian Apostolic Church. This was more than a decade ago. To this day I ave nor quite grasped what he was trying to say.Now you tell us what he meant. Forgive me for reposting the above this many times. As to Atheism, how many kinds are there? Is a Christian atheist the same as a Moslem one, a Jew, a Budhist, a Brahmin, a Hindu? You name the rest.Is a Catholic atheist the same as a Protestant one, an Apostolic, an Orthodox?A communist, a capitalist, a socialist etc.?What are each saying? What are they atheifying (here is a new word for you). Which part of "theism" are they rejecting? Are they denying the concept of religion as a rigid discipline, or are they protesting what MAN has made to/of it?Is a Christian questioning all that mythology surrounding surrounding Jesus, or is it a Moslem rejecting the premise that Allah is universal and universally omnipotent? -------------------- http://www.armsite.com/painters/bashinjagy...jagyan&slide=
axel
Take the time to read this this (actually the whole book is a must) and maybe you will get some insight into what atheism is. I don't think giving you an explanation with respect to my original post in the MJ article thread would be productive so I won't.
THOTH
Well Arpa - obviously there is no such thing (per se) as a Christian Atheist or any of the others as an Atheisit rejects all -theism...or belief in god/gods...not just a particular doctrine. However - folks like myself - who might consider themselves or be considered as atheists by others are also affected by the religious traditions/environment of the society that they grew up and or live in - so perhaps i could be considered as a Chistian Atheist - don't know...but certainly I cannot deny being influenced by judeo-chistian worldview etc even if I reject the religious doctrine...it is just a major part of my environment and socialization that I (or anyone in a particualr society) generally cannot avoid (for better or worse...and its a bit of both I think...) Anyway - doin't know if this helps any...and did not really follow thje discussion from the other thread as I have been away for a bit and am just back... Arpa
Dear THOTH, you answered exactly the way I was expecting, even better than I expected. In fact you said a lot by saying so little. It came to exactly what I was trying to say when I asked "how many kinds of atheists there are"? If I understand you correctly you are saying that a Chrsitian atheist (an oxymoron? a contadiction in terms?) basically rejects the excess baggage attached to their faith and so do the atheists of other cultures. In so doing, just like you, if you have trouble subscribing to ther unnecessarily excessive baggage which can sometime be described as mythology, such as virgin birth, resurrection etc. things that have nothing to do with goodness and virtue, then one would be labeled as atheist, and one would consider oneself and profess to be an atheist. In other words if one cannot just believe in a god without having to put up with all the nonsense that goes with it then one may prefer to to be known an atheist. Did I diagnose your and my ailment correctly?THe virgin birth has much relevence to being a good person as the price of tomatoes.
THOTH
Yes Arpa - in a sense I think you read me correctly (and boy thanks - I am not used to getting comments for my brevity...LOL). Are you faniliar with Deism BTW? However I should also add that I not only reject the Mythology (and in fact I have no problem with much of this as it exists to teach/illustrate lessons/concepts...its only when it gets taken too seriously...as fact etc...that one can debate and kill others for etc...that ist a problem...and becomes a waste of precious time....and reminds me of my once telling a fundementalist Chistian friend of mine that I would have no problem with Chitianity/christins per se - if only they didn't take the Bible so seriously...etc)...and anyway my original point - I in fact reject many much deeper and fundenmental concepts of Chistianity (and Islam as much/more so) - such as the concept of Sin...and this whole concept of God being opposed to man...and man being such a nasty little child that requires punishment etc....F-ing puritanical/fundie b-stards! Regulating good fun and all...f-em!

Regulating good fun and all...f-em! Deism? Kind of. But then again why does one need another deity when we have God. Who and what He is is immaterial, He is the answer to all the unanswerasbles. As to sin and antagonism with God is another pet peeve of mine. Why do they always invoke "fear of God" and not His love? Specially the Armenians. Consider that every other phrase we utter is "Astutsme vakhtsir". Once in an while we may also say "Asttsu siruyn".THe one thing that riles me just like you is when man is considered evil unless...I used to correspond with an Armenian who happened to be a kind of a fundamentalist, never a day went by when he did not mention that man was evil and sinful by nature, that man is born by and in sin. This is the part that really gets me. Temember today when we were talking about demonization, specially thatof te womankind, the like of Mary Magdalene etc. THe demonization of womankind goes way before that. Eve was the first woman that was demonized and as consequence she was cursed for not only sinning herself but more so for tempting Adam. That bitch of a tempress??And ever since then man is born in and by sin. Man is born as result of a sinful and ahameful act, all beacuse of that whorish bitch known as Eve??? Ever since then woman is considered evil, sinful and unclean, the reason why we cannot have women priests, those whorish, unclean, bitchy and sinful temptresses???How mysogynic can one be?No wonder many churches are filled with misgynic, pedophilic and perverted priests. Note. I tried to impress that that all those adjectives I used above are in sarcasm and in fact what I meant was exactly the opposite of what I said, that's why all those??????
