joseph parikian Posted August 24, 2003 Report Share Posted August 24, 2003 This i found in AZG Daily AUG/ 23 / 2003 Church and State ARMENIAN SCHOOLCHILDREN TO HAVE RELIGIOUS CLASSES A 2002, August agreement between the government of Armenia and the Armenian Apostolic Church on introduction of religion classes in the school curricular is based on the huge role of the Church, it has played in the strengthening and development of the state and its contributions to the Armenian culture and spiritual life. Under the agreement, students of 4-10-th grades will have a new subject called History of Armenian Church. The conceptual provisions of the new course and some of the textbooks were developed by a team of experts from Armenian education and science ministry, Yerevan State University and the Church. Vardan Ghandilian, the head of education ministry’s center for reforms, who is also the coordinator of the project and the editor of the textbooks, said two textbooks for 4-5-th grade students were prepared in a very short period of time. In an interview with the daily Azg Mr. Ghandilian said while preparing the textbooks the team faced a range of difficulties; first because they were doing a job that had no precedents. In addition to the textbooks, the team has developed and published also a special manual for teachers. Teachers, mainly of History, from around 70 secondary schools had had an extensive training course and the first textbooks had been tested from January to May of 2003. According to Mr. Ghandilian, the testing period was followed by many suggestions, remarks from various walks of life, experts and teachers, which helped the team to make some amendments to the textbooks and to print as many copies as required. He said that textbooks for 6,7 and 8-th grade students were also published, which will be tested in schools for 12 months beginning from September 1 to collect all possible suggestions and remarks. vava Posted August 24, 2003 Report Share Posted August 24, 2003 Many of the girls I knew as I grew up went to private Catholic schools where they were inundated with teachings of the History of the Catholic Church - including even a course entitled Theology - but basically they were taught to chew and spit out dates and 'facts' etc. If you'd ask them about the significance of religion in their lives, or the significance of their church within the community, you'd draw a blank stare. I think it's important to not impose beliefs on anyone, including children. Especially if it's taught in a way that may satisfy the teachers, but doesn't promote and understanding. Without knowing the content of the curriculum, I can’t comment in depth however one major advantage of religious teachings is the understanding and application of values into our lives. With the rampant corruption in Armenia introducing the church teachings in schools can mostly be positive on moral level and inspiring hope. While Arpa and most of us can dissect this on intellectual lever to make it another “intellectual party discussion” it is however must be seen from the perspective of a local population who desperately need hope for the future.
