Cheney Intervenes To Stall Armenian Bill

http://www.zaman.com/2003/07/10/cheney2.jpg

Washington D.C., USA, July 10, 2003 - The Justice and Development Party's (AKP) Istanbul Representative, Egemen Bagis, said yesterday that before the so-called Armenian Genocide bill was submitted to the US Senate, Dick Cheney, U.S. Vice President, intervened and conducted telephone diplomacy with the senators.

Bagis explained that before the so-called Armenian massacre bill was to be added to the agenda in the Senate, Cheney intervened. President Bush doesn't approve of the draft, Bagis continued, but because the U.S. President is now visiting Africa, the task of talking to the senators fell to Cheney.

In Washington with AKP Adana Representative Omer Celik and the Republican People’s Party's (CHP) Istanbul Representative, Zeynep Damla Gurel, to attend a North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Parliamentarians Assembly meeting, Bagis followed the instructions of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and paid close attention to the issues of the so-called Armenian Genocide bill and the detention of 11 Turkish soldiers in Iraq.

Bagis pointed out that he held meetings with the Democratic Party's Florida Representative, Robert Wexler, the Turkey-U.S.A. Friendship Group Head, U.S. Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs, Marc Grossman, authorities at the White House, the U.S. Department of Defense, the Pentagon and various think tanks, and members of the U.S. Congress.

The budget bill, which was proposed by the US State Department, is currently being discussed by the Senate. The letter was sent to US Vice President Dick Cheney and the members of the Senate.

Meanwhile, Armenian Parliament Head Artur Bagdasyan announced yesterday that Armenia was ready for dialogue with Turkey and the Turkish parliament in order to normalize relations between the two countries. Turkey is our ENEMY, period. Israel is their ally, period. We should elevate our efforts to do everything to create economic chaos in the Turkish nation.

There should be NO dialogue with them at all. Keep the border closed. While I will keep in comunication with my Jewish relatives, I know that the Jewish lobby will NEVER support Genocide recognition. This is two pronged-to keep the Holocaust on a higher plane and to conceal the central role of the Donmeh in the Genocide. It is all about power to distort the truth. Perhaps Harry Truman who did so much for the Jewish people was right, the Jewish lobby is very selfish. They really don't care about Armenian pain or others pain.

As for Turkey we should step up our efforts to keep them out of the EU. We should increase our diplomatic efforts with the Central Asian Turkish states that they want to assimilate into their nation. (They are expansionists you know.) Furthermore, we should develop a noos of nations around Turkey-Greek hegemony in the Aegean. Bulgarian and Ukranian hegemony in the Black Sea. Improve relations with Georgia and Russia. Keep up relations with the moderate elements in Iran and Syria. Support the Kurdish aspirations.

There should be no dialogue with the Turks. The AAA was USED for Turkish ends. TARC is a Turkish ploy to finish us off.

TO PLEASE ANKARA WASHINGTON WITHDREW LEGISLATION INDIRECTLY RECOGNIZING ARMENIA GENOCIDE FROM SENATE AGENDA

- July 12, 2003 15:45

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ US Vice President Dick Cheney fulfilled his promise to Turkish prime minister Recep Erdogan – the bill recognizing the Armenian Genocide is withdrawn from the US Senate agenda. As reported by "Arminfo" agency, "Sabah" Turkish newspaper writes. According to the source, Dick Cheney made much effort to that end being concerned over the tension in the US-Turkish relations arisen due to the US military arresting Turkish soldiers in Iraq. The newspaper writes that within the recent 72 hours, Pentagon representative Paul Wolfowitz and US deputy secretary of state Richard Armitage made many efforts to prevent the Senate from discussing the Genocide bill by holding intensive telephone conversations with US Congress top officials. Due to these efforts, the Congress leadership demanded that the authors of the bill, Senators John Ensign and Jon Corzine withdraw it. Referring to sources in Congress, the newspaper supposes, that the discussion of the bill will be postponed until unknown time. It should be reminded that the Armenian lobby had intended to submit the bill indirectly recognizing the Armenian Genocide to consideration by the Senate along with the US State Department FY 2004 budget draft. Thereupon, the Turkish press did not rule out the opportunity of the given bill to be passed, which will mean US state structures indirect recognition of the Armenian Genocide held in Ottoman Turkey in 1915.

Why we are so naive. Is there any sane Armenian, that believes that recognition of the Genocide is an Armenian issue. NO, my friends, it is not. It is State Department's issue. Whenever America wants something from the filthy t.... they flash the Genocide cart.

The real Armenian issue is to strengthen Republic of Armenia and God willing one day we f.... the t.... back in an appropriate way.

I think what you say is interesting, Hagarag. Only yesterday The Washington Post reported on the discovery of Truman's diary where he says just that. BUT he also says:

Put an underdog on top and it makes no difference whether his name is Russian, Jewish, Negro, Management, Labor, Mormon, Baptist he goes haywire. I've found very, very few who remember their past condition when prosperity comes."

And this makes me think - What would Armenians do if they were suddenly no longer 'underdogs' but 'on top'?

Would WE remember our past condition? Would we act appropriately? Would we, as Gamavor puts it: F--- the T--- back appropriately? Or could there be a possibility tha Armenians as a society would transcend the cultural urge for revenge and attonement....

HERE's the article.

Vava,

You pose a very good question.

The reason I mentioned what I did is because I had read just the article you posted about the memoirs of Harry Truman.

As for Armenians, he is right. Those on top forget. Nobody cares that my family were one of the most prominent Armenian families in the Ottoman state. The descendants of my great-grandfathers servants and indentured farmers, now among the wealthiest Armenians in America, look down at my family now.

The strengthening should not only be of the ROA but of the worldwide Diaspora as well. Alliances should be formed around the globe. All the Christian nations once under the Turkish yoke should form an alliance, as all suffered under her rule. Every time I see another story about the Bosnian Moslems having been slaughtered, I think to what the Turks once did to the Christians there to invoke so much hatred for these Moslems.

Yes Hagarag, sometimes even I agree with you. Armenian lobby (if there is such a thing) should be concerned about promoting business projects in Armenia, cultural programs in the Diaspora and elsewhere. Advertising what has left of our heritage to foreigners. Inclusion of Armenia in all possible international organizations. Development of educational programs not only for young Armenians abroad but vice- verse. Strong and unambiguous support for Armenia's EU orientation. Political support for all our friends (meaning lobbying for not-represented interests in the Congress), just like the Jews do for the Turks. Joining hands with the Greeks, Kurds, all the Balkans, Russians and Georgians when it comes to quotas and business. Being successful means getting out of your shelf, that is the bottom line. :)

Latest news is that the Genocide Bill will be coming up for a vote again next week. Bush Administration is actively lobbying to kill the bill. Turkish government to visit at time of vote.

Time for Armenians to get behind a candidate to beat Bush. Find out which Democrat is the strongest for our issues and has the best chance to win. I have chosen my candidate, have you?

Bottom line today-Genocide recognition has to do with economics. Why are Turkish markets so tied with a Genocide vote in the US Congress? It is because many of Turkey's elite sit on wealth stolen from the Armenians and others. Recognition of the Genocide and the implementation of the just rights of former Ottoman subjects, Genocide survivors and their descendants would economically devastate Turkey. The Turks realize the economic magnitude of this. It only reinforces how many Armenians and others were killed and the magnitude of their wealth. My father's elderly cousin once called our family's lost inheritance "Une fortune colossal." Just multiply this many times. Cheney is helping the Turkish elite hold on to stolen wealth. How typical for a conservative.
