hyebruin
ok! i was wondering... what do you guys think about this??? in all fairness and honesty do you guys think that it's okay, in a university/college, for people to 'save seats' like 3-5 and sometimes even more!! like up to 6-7?? for their friends or even ask you to move down a couple of seats so they can ALLL sit together?? ...you guys think this is fair? rude? all right??...and what if this happens on a regular basis and their friends get there late or sometimes not at all, and others who got there early are left sitting on the corners?? i'm REALLLY curious as to what you guys think about this!! since this has become the freakin' norm at my school!!! hyebruin
aaaah somehow that doesn't go with the lovely snow white image!!! <_< i blame it on 'grumpy'...he has that kind of effect on me!!!
Dan
I hate that. I hate people who do that. It's not fair. You come late, you site at the back, alone, that's how it goes. I haven't had this problem before, because I show up early before class, and get my seat, and no one really asks me to move anywhere. But I've seen them asking others. And I hate it when a friend asks me to save a seat for him/her. I don't do it. The other day someone in my class who is trying to be friends with me and flirt with me asked me to save a seat for her right after the tutorial for the lecture, because she was gonna go get coffee? I didn't save a seat for her. That was mean, but I was too pissed off. I really hate the "save a seat" issue. Can't stand it. And what's this about friends sitting beside each other during lectures? Do they come for chit-chatting? I usually avoid sitting with people I know in class, because if they start a conversation, I would've be able to listen to the prof and/or end up being embarassed by prof for talking. Accelerated
mmmmm........we (I) dont have this problem at uni coz no one turns up to the engineering lectures, and the business/finance lectures are full of sissies.
Harut
hm, i've never been asked to move (not to sound too arogant, but most would be more than happy if i sit next to them, especially during tests), neither asked to save a sit. could be that because our classes are small, 25 ppl in avg. and everyone finds a permenent seat for him/her during the first week for the rest of the term.well, few times an armenian guy asked me to save a seat next to me, so he could copy the test from me. never did, because i think it's not fair for others who show up early and also want to copy from me. lol actually, in our university, most want to sit in the corner/back. yes, it is a school of dumbs and loosers. hyebruin
don't get me wrong now! i don't move once i have my notes and pen out!! i just say 'sorry!!'...i like to see from here! that simple!! but i do agree on the friends issue!! i try to sit alone!! really!! or next to people who i know wouldn't talk to me during lecture..though i like to clear up and compare notes AFTER!!! the lecture!! such a simple idea but people just don't get it!!! ...in particular, i have this one friend who is so freakin' wired about everything in her life...school, boyfriend, vacations with boyfriend, being involved in EVERYTHING in school, and not finding much time for anything..besides the extracurricular and the boyfriend of course!! that she just radiates tooooo much energy and it starts to interfere with my energy and my equilibrium...then i start talking fast and crazy like her!! which really annoys me!! like if that wasn't stressful enough....i ABSOLUTELY AVOID sitting next to her...'cause she for whatever reason (maybe the ten million colored pens, and her hectic life schedule...i don't know!) can't sustain a normal attention/listening span and keeps asking what did he say? or worse yet!! as she tries to copy some of my chicken scratch..she expects me to stop listening and decipher my writing to her!!! it's crazy!! i don't want to lose the friendship, but how do you tell someone to hold it until the freakin' lecture is over?? ...and when i try to ignore her...she just keeps looking at my face and waiting for an answer...waiting for me to stop listening and start explaining to her...some people are too freakin' selfish IMO!! <_<
Sip
I don't see a problem with it ... does the seat really matter? I usually didn't really pay attention to where I was sitting ... I'd just show up and sit wherever ... usually somewhere in the back and to the left ... since I am a lefty, I would try to sit at lefty chairs during exams though but even that was no big deal. But as Juggy said, engineering type classes are a LOT more relaxed and laid back (for the most part). Especially in grad school. I didn't take any notes in most of my classes. What I can't stand is those people that write down EVERYTHING a teacher says in colored pens or pencils, and use rulers and shit to draw straight lines on their fricking notes!!! But worst of all, I just can't stand those that ERASE their notes!!!! I mean WTF? Why the HELL would you ever need to ERASE your notes? But I guess we all have our pet-peeves. Oh and I used to get ticked off a lot by those who asked REALLY stupid questions in class. ===edit: On a related note, I cannot remember at any time, anyone having saved any seats for someone in any of my computer science classes ... that's in my almost 10 years of UCLA experience! Either people don't really care about the seats or they dont' have any friends for whom to save seat
nairi
What I really can't stand are people who sit at the beginning of an empty row, thus hogging the whole row. That's especially annoying for students who are late (me!) and just want to grab the first seat available near the aisle unnoticed.
Accelerated
On a related note, I cannot remember at any time, anyone having saved any seats for someone in any of my computer science classes ... Same here, Ive never been asked to save seats for anyone or turned up to a lecture and not sat wherever I wanted, though sometimes people do ask me to move over ONE seat when their friend turns up etc. but its a non issue really. I love engineers (students) so laid back, relaxed, rational and intelligent and not pretentious like most of the rest. Unlike computer science and most other courses, engineering here is very demanding (though not as bad as in Europe) despite the relativelly low entry requirements. Its next to impossible to get decent grades (NOTE: decent, not necessarilly good), work part-time and have a social life at the same time. And this goes for four years. Im still proud to be an engineer though, and part be of the engineering profession! I just chose the wrong field of engineering
Harut
another question. do you guys really benefit from your notes? do you ever use them after you take them?i've never taken notes in high school. and now in university, my notes total to 5 pages for 2 years. Dan
My my... in my computer science classes, it's like a marathon on who gets to sit where. I don't usually mind where I sit as long as it's not far back cos the prof writes on the board and I have a poor eye vision even with eyeglasses. Heh. I used to write down everything a prof said, but when I got home, I just never read it, and even if I did, it sounded stupid. So I stopped taking notes, and just listened and maybe jotted down important stuff which wasn't included in our stupid book, as my memory is not all that great. Yea, and what's up with people who use a million colored pencils, highlighters, rules... LOL. OMG, only the scissors is missing, eh? It's like an art class or something. One of the other things I hate is when someone is chewing a gum and is making bubbles and bursting them, and it makes an awful lot of sound as the class is quiet, right? I hate that. And another thing I hate is during tests, people read their questionnaires out loud, as if they can't read the stuff in their minds. This usually happens in my general education (arts, philosophy, psych, etc.) courses. I once turned back to the girl who was doing it, and told her "will you please stop talking out loud? It's a test, ya know?" LOL. She didn't stop. I have ADHD and it's impossible for me to think and write when there's distractions around me, and I ended up changing my place during the test. I almost always go to my lectures alone, and leave alone (as most of my lectures are one after the other). It's not like I'm anti-social. Another thing I hate is when your friend in the class knows you have another lecture right after the class, and still doesn't stop chit-chatting with you after the first class. And I try to be as nice as possible and run away at the first opportunity, but some people are just chatter-boxes. And what's up with this "group study" thing? I can't see how that would work? How can someone study with others? Each person has a different way of studying! Not to mention, how can someone do an assignment with another person? I have my own style of writing programs, and it would take me more time to understand what the other person is telling me than for me to write the entire program. Depends on the class. Taking notes for lit is indispensable, because most of what is said is neither in the book nor reader, but will definitely be asked during exams. I guess it all depends on what kind of learner you are as well. I've noticed that the guys in my class take much less notes than the girls... Dan
I agree with Nairi on that. I always take notes in my lit. classes. If I hadn't taken notes in my 16h century poetry and prose class, I would've had to get books from the library and scan them for the info that was talked about in class, and that's pointless, considering that I DO go to class, and to avoid doing double-work, I just take notes. In Math classes, I usually do take notes, but not in computer science classes or physics classes, cos it's pointless.
