Harut
whenever i plug it doesn't play. lol seriously, it doesn't automatically recognize any plug and play compatible hardware when i connect to it. (external floppy, memory stick, web cam, etc.)yes, i have tested my hardware, they work fine on other computers.
Sip
This is to the laptop? ... external floppy I understand ... but what about memory stick ... Does yours have a reader or are you connecting a stick reader to it? Is the webcam USB? Are all of these being connected by USB? If so, then maybe your USB is not enabled (either in Bios or somewhere in your notebook settings). Do you have ANY USB devices that work or have worked before with that PC? Maybe you have one of those "plug and pray" systems
Harut
yes, this is my laptop.all of them are being connected through USB. yes the USB port works, because if i plug any of those hardware and restart the computer, it will recoginze them.and the memory stick i mentioned is not really a memory stick. it's one of those new USB storages. here take a look. http://www.avbusa.com/avb2003/images/UF-128B.jpg

(it's for network).
vava
No Harut, don't enable the Universal PnP component unless you really need it. There are scores of security problems with it - I believe that most have been patched, but if you haven't installed the updates you're better off without. I have been experimenting with the 2 new Dell laptops we have at the office, both are running XP. I took verious USB peripherals and hot-plugged (& unplugged) them (10 times each), just to see how easily they would be recognized - I also did some cold-reboots with the USB components attached. I know it's not very scientific, but I have heard some of my colleagues complaining about similat type of problems as you. Also please note that all necessary drivers were installed, and that all componenets worked. Here's a summary of the results: Dell 1 USB Digital Camera 1 (nikon coolpix) - 7/10USB Digital Camera 2 (Canon G2) - 9/10USB Floppy (it was kicking around, we don't really need it) - 10/10USB2 External 80Gb HD - 9/10USB Palm Sync cradle (requires 3rd party software) - 6/10USB MD player 9/10USB Optical mouse 9/10 Average success rate - 8.4/10-- Dell 2 USB Digital Camera 1 (nikon coolpix) - 6/10USB Digital Camera 2 (Canon G2) - 7/10USB Floppy (it was kicking around, we don't really need it) - 9/10USB2 External 80Gb HD - 7/10USB Palm Sync cradle (requires 3rd party software) - 3/10USB MD player 8/10USB Optical mouse 9/10 Average success rate - 7/10 Wow! I had no idea there would be such a difference. Please note tha BOTH systems are identical. They were purchased together, and are used for the same purpose. They have the same software installed etc. I have no clue WHY this happened, and I'm sure some of the difference could be attributed to my very non-rigourous experimental technique But it would seem that this could be an inconsistency hardware problem at Dell (i don't think this is likely) OR there may be some compatibility issues between some Dell components and WinXP professional. I have no more time now, but maybe I'll look up this problem in the MS & Dell knowledge bases sometime...
vava
Oh, and just a note of interest. All components were recognized at a rate of 100% when the PCs were cold booted.
Harut
vava, thanks for all the trouble you went through.but the rate is 0/10 for all my periferials (external floppy, storage thing, webcam, printer).the laptop originally came with xp home. i changed it to pro. but i'm sure i installed all the drivers that dell supplied.maybe that is the problem. i'm thinking just going back to home. but i need oracle on it, and i heard some guys had problems with oracle on home. vava
I'm not AS experienced on XP as some other MS OSes, or even some alternatives, but I would stick with XP pro. Perhaps some of your USB peripherals need extra drivers installed - but seeing that your not able to mount ANY of your peripherals I suspect the problem might be a combination hardware/software compatibilty issue. Here's a possible solution I found at THIS SITE , and if this doesn't help, there is more possible solutions ON THIS PAGE. SiS USB Registry Patch (Windows XP) This patch fixes the undetectable problem with SiS USB controller on Windows XP SiS USB Registry Patch - Usbdetect.exe - 54KB - 12/17/2001 USBdetect.exe Note; After you apply the patch, you may need to refresh the USB driver stack. Remove all USB devices (except USB keyboard and/or mouse) from the Device Manager in the following order: Devices: HID and/or Composite USB USB Root Hub (s) USB Host Controller (s) Shutdown and reboot Hope this helps, and goodluck! Harut
thanks, but didn't fix it.actually this is what i found while i was in device manager. i've got a device with no drivers installed for. and guess what it's called.Universal Serial Bus (USB) Controllerthis was there before the patch and stayed there after installing it.i guess this is the problem.i tried to find drivers for this controller. no luck. i guess it's just a generic name. any new suggestions? my last resort is just to reformat the HD, install the original xp home that dell supplied, in hope of that it'll fix it, and then upgrade from there to pro, instead of installing from scrach like i did before. vava
It was just a gues... what do the guys at USBman.com say? I'm sure they'll have a shortcut for you.... I think you found the problem
Azat
Harut, one thing to do it to turn off all applications, login as Admin user, go to the systems info area and remove the "USB ROOT HUB" device. Reboot and let XP find the new device and reinstall it. Once it is reinstalled most likely the USB will work. Another thing you can do is just call the Dell support and pretend that you did not upgrade the OS and see if they can solve the issue. Most likely they can help. USB devices were not recognised and the USB controler driver was not installed, evem after I knoew which one it was from the VIA chipset, and manualy se;ected it, it was ignoring it, I deleted it from the manager, restarted, XP found it, but still was unable to find the USB controler even after I showed where to take it. I was forced to buy a USB PCI card, and it worked well, and after that misteriously, the one on the motherboard worked, I never knew why, the problem was gone like it came. hytga
You might need some additional drives. Did any cd's come with the hardware, like the digital cam, etc? if no cd's came with them, check out the website of the manufacturer for updated drivers for xp. they should work after you install them. xp doesn't always come preinstalled with all the hardware drivers, sometimes you have to install the appropriate driver, to plug and play Edited April 4, 2004 by hytga
