Sip
Talking of disgusting, you guys made me feel so guilty that I had a Jack In The Box salad today ... I have to say they are really good. They have 3 different kinds ... I usually prefer the Southwest one but today I had the Club ... I haven't really tried the asian one yet. ... and Nairi, I have to walk 15 minutes just to get from my office to my car at UCLA and have a 40 minute drive EACH WAY. Yes, this is ALL done in the cold freezing temperatures of LA and I usually have to walk uphill (both directions).
hyebruin
...like 20 or 30 minutes to even get to the gym!!OH -- MY -- GOD!!!! Vay vay vay! LOL!!!!! I used to bike to school five days a week 30 minutes ONE WAY! Which meant 60 minutes a day! And if my bike was broken, too bad! I had to walk all the way! Yep, even if it was freezing cold, drenching wet, or hot as h.ll. And don't give me LA as an excuse Whenever I've been there I've walked almost everywhere (and I've only been there in the middle of summer, i.e. the hottest months -- so no excuse there either!). Anyway, point is: you work out for 30-40 minutes in a gym, but walking 20-30 minutes is too much?? How do you cope with that? And I think the idea was that after a 40-60-minute walk, you don't need to go to the gym anymore!i can totally understand how you wouldn't understand! ....after working all day long, sometimes even going to the gym is hard enough!! especially when you're sitting in traffic for over an hour and a half sometimes!! this ain't europe! people need to go to places and they need to get there fast...sadly!!! now, what is reaaaaaly hillarious is those people who will spend like 15-20 minutes driving around the gym just to get the closest parking spot...now THAT!!! is ridiculous... and living here and being a tourist are two verrrrrry different things... i know the tourists would love to feel the place and what better way than just taking a stroll...but come on, if you lived here you'd realize that you feel handicapped if you don't have transportation? you ask why??? it's because there is NO good public transportation!!! why else would the freeways become so crowded? there's no subway, no metro, no practical train stations unless you're traveling very long distances!! it's one of those issues that no politician or elected official gives a damn about...while all the time complaining of the freeway congestions?? if we only had more bus lines that would arrive like every 3-5 minutes and take you everywhere you would need to go!! that's only a dream!! <_<

I haven't really tried the asian one yet. yes!! mission accomplished!! you should eat more healthy, you'd feel better and lighter and a whole bunch of other good feelings... ....anyways, a couple of nights ago we went to a denny's with a couple of friends...and i decided ...geeez i never have anything "bad" ...let me try their sauteed mushroom CHICKEN burger (though it came with onion rings and i didn't eat all of it either!)...oh my god, afterwards it felt soooooooooooooo disgusting...my system is not used to all that garbage so i had heartburn and nausea all night and up through noon the next morning...i think it even trickled down to the afternoon!!! then i said to myself it's either their turkey sandwhiches (just normal sandwhiches!) from now on...OR the breakfast menu (minus that ham!!) Azat
talk about eating too much. I was preparing for a small gathering today for 3+ hours. Had to go and buy the fish, ribs, stake, veggies and all. Came home and had to marinate the ribs and the stakes. I was in front of the grill for about an hour or so and all I ate was just the veggie salad.(alot of it, but is was so good) now I smell like shish kebab from all the smoke and cooking. Sip, you and I are probably the same weight give or take 5 pounds, but there is no way I can eat those burritos. Bravo. I walk about 25 minutes each way to lunch 3 days a week. And I also walk to relatives houses who live few blocks away in Glendale at evening and nights. it is not dangerous. People just use that excuse not to walk. nairi
....after working all day long, sometimes even going to the gym is hard enough!! especially when you're sitting in traffic for over an hour and a half sometimes!! this ain't europe! people need to go to places and they need to get there fast...sadly!!!Hmm... Sounds like Europe to me.... and living here and being a tourist are two verrrrrry different things... i know the tourists would love to feel the place and what better way than just taking a stroll... True. But I'm so used to walking or biking somewhere that sitting in a car after a while just drives me nuts! I have to get out and walk! The AC in the car makes me sick as well... Another reason to get some fresh air. I feel the same way in Holland about this. The only reason I got a license was for emergencies and because it's a skill that you absolutely need nowadays. Keep in mind that I still don't have a car! I still have to do everything either by foot or bike, including shopping... but come on, if you lived here you'd realize that you feel handicapped if you don't have transportation? True for long-distances. It's the same here. There's no way you can walk or bike from Amsterdam to Rotterdam (no matter how small the distance looks on the map ), unless you have A LOT of free time and energy on your hands. That's when you either catch a train (which hardly ever comes on time, is majorly congested during rush hours -- 50 people standing in a space built for 20 -- not to mention the ridiculously high prices), or hope someone can drive you or lend you a car. But I'm talking about short distances: from anywhere in Glendale to the Galleria, or the park, or to a friend's house a few blocks away. And actually I was talking about exercising!!! As in, why go to the gym, when there are so many other ways to work out, such as walking a few blocks? Anyway, you may think things are very different in Europe, but they're not Things are becoming more and more American... Freeway congestion and people driving to the gym! And those who don't want to go to a public gym, buy their own equipment and build a gym within the confines of their own home! Like a treadmill: one of those machines I never understood... I mean WHY??? A machine to walk, jog, or run on??? What's wrong with pavement??? Oh and one last thing about public transportation: most of the time it does NOT drop you off in front of the place you are going to. You still have to walk up to 10, maybe 20 minutes. Also, unless they're intercity trains, PT does not run 24/7, so after a certain hour you have no other choice but to drive, bike or walk. So PT is not that perfect. The only good thing IMO about PT is the fact that you can go out on a Friday night, get completely wasted and not have to worry about driving home! Just thank god for broad shoulders otherwise I would look like a tdanz ... but a lot of it is in the legs (quads). Even though I was one of the slowest runners in high school (flat feet), I could squat and leg-lift almost 20% more than the strongest guys in class (who were also in the football team). So my A in lifting would cancel my F in running the mile and I would get about a C in class! But after dislocating my knees playing basketball, I didn't do any more heavy lifting so I'm not sure what I can do now. sen_vahan: What do you mean?????? Dear Bruin,Sorry to disagree with you and I did not mean to push a wrong button. Believe me dear my work is enough hectic. I have an hour lunch and am usually working from 7:30 to about 6:30 on those 3 days, but I still prefer to walk to lunch and have a quick lunch(the eating part) As for the walking in Glendale I can tell you that it is mostly an excuse. no I have never had anyone follow me. After all who would follow a looser. and I do understand what you are saying, but I just checked the FBI stats for 2000 there were only 16 rapes in Glendale. In fact it is the 5 lowest in the country for a city of 100000 or more. As for letting my sister(don't have a wife or daughter) walk: She walks with me in the evenings when we go over to our relatives house many times and she likes jogging and I hate it so she will go out and jog in the evenings in our hood without any problems. vava
Nairi - I fully support your point of view in this thread. It's just too bad that most North Amercians are so attached to their cars, that they cannot find alternative/more ecological modes of transportation. The psyche of the average north american has not yet evolved to consider the bigger picture - it's not just about personal health, or just about ecology - it's about developing a better way of living. Here we have congestion problems on the bridges. But when you look at the cars stuck on the bridge, 90%+ carry only one person: the driver. Even if it's a bug SUV (sorry sip) like a Lincoln Navigator . What's the use of that?? Why not carpool? Obviously people are going to/and returning from work at similar times...
