An Interesting Study

Recommended Posts

Watching the news the other day, and one of the stories was from Britain (I think). In a nutshell: a bunch of lab geeks (aka. scientists  ) conducted experiments on mice and discovered that mice which did physical exercise had significantly many more brain cells than those that didnt thanks to a better blood supply to the brain. However, intelligence is NOT a function of the number of brain cells, but depends on the number of interlinked brain cells. The conclusion being, that those that do physical exercise are likelly to have a better 'potential intelligence' - than those that dont exercise: Take that you fat computer geeks!

that's true!! when einstein died they looked at his brain and found that he had roughly the same number of brain cells (neuronal cells) as the average man...however, there was a huge!! difference when compared to normal/average subjects with regards to those interlinking cells (called neuroglial cells) which are support cells that provide glucose and blood to the neurons...which can also be seen by the many grooves present on einstein's brain compared to the average person...these grooves are very few in number in sheep brain---striking difference---

other benefits of exercise: increased endorphin release (same stuff that's released during/after sex)...these are the 'feel-good' chemicals that can have analgesic effects in high concentrations and are the sites associated with drug abuse euphoria!!

still other benefits: increased basal metabolism, increased cardiac output, increased pulmonary function, decreasing the risk of: hypertension, stroke, heart attack, diabetes, osteoporosis (for women mainly), obesity, and even cancer (this is relatively new!)

and still more stuff!!

and of course! you feel ohhhhh sooooo sexxxxy after a workout of course!! B) B)

hmmmmm ... I usually just feel extremely dumb, hungry, stickey, sweaty, disgusting, smelly, beat up, and tired, after a good workout. So maybe I'm doing it wrong?

Yes, hence the term 'gym junkie' :P

It is indeed tempting to just go and pose in front of a mirror for 1/2 hour afterwards - hehe

Sip, im afraid the consumption of an all-you-can-eat course at the local chinese buffet does not qualify as physical exercise. :D

Hey, you try carrying 3 plates full of food each trip between the buffets and your table. You think I got these big guns pumping iron?

Know what you mean! But I think the idea is to take a shower afterwards. :) Unfortunately I can't always do that when I have to bike or walk somewhere far or in a hurry. That's the worst IMO: arriving somewhere other than home all sweaty and stinky and not being able to do anything about it except hope that nobody notices...

But now honestly, which is more enjoyable eating or excercising?

At least eating is always good and in any situation.

I think both are enjoyable in moderation, and when eating turns into gluttony...now, that's just disgusting!!! like those fat people who lick every last food droplet off their plate!!! <_< ...what are they thinking???and i've noticed at least where i am that it's always the really big people who keep helping themselves at places like 'hometown buffet'... then they go home and get all depressed about it, I'm sure!!! there's also the dumb 'jocks' who can't stay away from the gym (alterior motive: to pick up women)...talk about desperate!! people like that are a total turn off!!

You mean like this disgusting fat guy? Yah, what a loser! What the HELL was he thinking ... http://zr2.cs.ucla.edu/Sip/zr2/barf.gif

Oh but don't go around knocking hometown buffet. They got GOOD mashed potatos!!! Some of the best I've ever had ... on some days they have good stuff .. especially for the price. When I was living in San Jose, I would just go there about two or three times a week .... around lunch time ... that would cover my whole breakfast, lunch, dinner, and next day's breakfast for the nominal $7 fee! :)

sip, i wasn't talking about you, (at least you can move!!)...unless you want to be identified as such or be put into that category?! i don't know why?? but i doubt it's just about food! don't wanna shrink ya' head!

I actually have thought about it! It's one of the most common ways people use to draw sympathy compliments and such out of others :D Just listen carefully at how people talk, and you will notice a great majority of people do it in one way or another. I have never had a psychology class but I'm sure they have a name for this thing (when you put yourself down in order to have others praise you) ;)

But in my case, it goes a bit further ... I will be the first to say that being "geeky", being "strange", "loving food", not "looking like the cover photo of blah magazine", looking at things from a different angle than the norm, not having "everything", not being "perfect", and simply being "you" is perfectly OK as long as you intelligently question what people often take for granted and/or GIVEN and then decide how you want to define yourself.

All this talk of food made me VERY hungry so on the way home from school, I stopped by Del Taco (thank GOD for 24 hour fast food) ... 4 Sonora Chicken Burritos and 2 Chicken Quesedias.... Bro and I just got done feasting and I can tell you ... there is really NO feeling in the world that can compare to what I'm feeling right now ... needless to say I'm exhausted and am going to pass out ... I LOVE midnight snacks (or feasts as it may be) B)

ha!!! YOU LIE!!! that's #1, I KNOW!!! you can think of something else that feels just as superb!!

and the 'sympathy' thing...whoever told ya that is a big fat liar!!!...i can tell you that it DOES NOT!! work especially if you're being sincere in your endeavor!!

it might be 'cute' if it's done playfully once in a great while for little things to get some extra attention...but long term, nooooo way!!

i'm telling you girls don't like it at all, and guys...well, i hear the same thing when they describe what they like about girls....and confidence and being yourself is just enough!! because if one is truely empowered with self-esteem and knows his/her own worth, then there is no need for "sympathy" ;)

Haurt mi moratsir vor du im kes chapen es!!!! :D

... and Bruin, I am one of the most self confident geeks I have ever met :D ... arten "self confidence"e vritses ktuma   :naughty: (but I will need every ounce of that and some more to do my Ph.D. defense ... you have to be like that, otherwise they will just tear you apart and eat you for lunch).

Bayts don't get me wrong ... I WILL be hitting the gym later on tonight. Believe me, if I didn't keep active and kept eating as much as I eat now, I probably wouldn't be able to type this message since my hands wouldn't reach the keyboad :lol2:

So I think moral of story is one has to live to the fullest ... if you enjoy food, and if exercise will enable you to eat more, then for heavens sake, there's really no reason you can't do a lot of BOTH. Especially now that we have concluded that eating and exercising more will turn you into a more intelligent mouse B)

Isn't it ironic?? Y'all driving to the gym, working out on some machines, and then driving back home? How about walking to the gym and back without actually going inside the gym? You'll probably end up using more muscles and burning more calories doing just that...

Down here, we call that a BURRITO ... and while we're on the subject, THIS ONE is a chimichanga (deep fried burrito) ... that particular chimichanaga was the best I have ever had ... it was in the Lake Arrowhead area at this little town called Blue Jay (about 2 hours from LA in the San Bernardino mountains). The burrito above was in the 29 Palms area near Jashua Tree national park ... basically in the desert, 1/2 way between LA and Arizona. Needless to say, it tasted awesome since I was starving by that time .... had spent the entire day since sunrise in the desert writing/debugging code for a military-related demonstration on my laptop which was covered in dust ... couldn't even press most of the keys since their underside was clogged with dirt!!!!!!

Ever tried to write a program without using the keys p, k, f, and space? (hint: copy-paste ;))

verrrry true!! but in l.a. walking is not always an option!!...1st off, there's the great distance you gotta walk sometimes...like 20 or 30 minutes to even get to the gym!! and then there are people who go at nighttime!! which is the dumbest thing to do (to walk in the dark for that long! ....and the morning folks i'm sure would say that they want to save as much time as they can!!....this all basically applies only if you do NOT live a block or two away from the gym!

...like 20 or 30 minutes to even get to the gym!!

OH -- MY -- GOD!!!! Vay vay vay! LOL!!!!! I used to bike to school five days a week 30 minutes ONE WAY! Which meant 60 minutes a day! And if my bike was broken, too bad! I had to walk all the way! Yep, even if it was freezing cold, drenching wet, or hot as h.ll.

And don't give me LA as an excuse :) Whenever I've been there I've walked almost everywhere (and I've only been there in the middle of summer, i.e. the hottest months -- so no excuse there either!).

Anyway, point is: you work out for 30-40 minutes in a gym, but walking 20-30 minutes is too much?? How do you cope with that? And I think the idea was that after a 40-60-minute walk, you don't need to go to the gym anymore!
