Phobias

OK, so does anyone here have any phobias?

I have insect-phobia and arachnophobia. Once, a grasshoper jumped on me, and I almost died of seizure (I'm serious). And I couldn't breathe for like I don't know how long. And on another occasion, my mom almost crashed into the car in front of her on the road cos I yelled all of a sudden when I realized there was a ladybug on my hand. :lol2:

So anyone else have any phobias? Or am I the only weirdo?

Well I'm really really scared of dogs. I love them but I'm scared ... I mean REEEEEEEEEEEEALLY SCARED ... Whenever I see a dog that's not attached to a leash I feel a hot and cold chill running down my spine. Then I go numb ... and jump behind the nearest object (i.e. desk, tree, human being). And if there is nothing around I close my eyes and walk away, hoping he/she will not notice me

Just a reminder, phobia is more then being afraid off, or being scared. Phobias are at least powerfull enough to creat a panick attack.

So, I think a minority of the population has real phobias. If you can't control the fear, and that it can make you paralysed, then that is a phobia. In some cases when you can't fonction in society because of it, the person should be treated, because it could be linked with an anxiety disorder. For example, if someone is agoraphobic etc...

My phobia is that Earth stop spining and goes directly in the Sun. :D That was a joke of course.

Another thing, is that some times being very afraid of something in a situation that could lead to a panic attack, that is not phobia if the fear is proportional to the threat of the situation. When you are attacked by dogs :) And you are very scared, thats not a phobia, it is a phobia when the fear not only exist during the situation, but as well the anticipation of that situation is enough to make you afraid.

Well said, Domino.

I, for one, am REALLY arachnophobic. If I see a spider, I get all blue and have difficulty breathing.

A funny thing that happened - I was sitting at the front row in my Data Structures and Algorithms class once, and the prof was lecturing on Stacks and Queues, and I was really bored, and looking around (I have ADHD and am REALLY hyper), and all of a sudden, I spotted a small spider on my table. I thought this was the end of it - I was gonna be embarassed in front of the entire class - and the spider was coming towards me. I was freaking out. I got all blue, and then the prof was giving me these weird looks while explaining the lesson. I couldn't breathe, I was almost choking. And I couldn't even kill the spider cos that would make a sound and get the classroom's attention, and even then, I was too scared to even kill it even if I could! So then I removed my book from the table and the spider luckily changed its direction and went away. After that, man, I never sit in front rows anymore. :lol2:

And I also have agoraphobia, by the way. Cos I was arrested by cops in front of everyone (cos I was sitting at university, crying...), and after that started getting panic attacks. Panic attacks just suck, big time - you feel like your heart is gonna stop and that you're gonna die right there, on the spot. And it lasts like 2-3 minutes. Once, I had the panic attack in public, and that was a HUGE embarassment, and I ended up locking myself up at home for more than 1 month after that, cos I was too scared that the same thing would happen. Now I'm coping better with that, after being put on some meds for anxiety attacks (the agoraphobia just slowed down a bit). ;)

Well, I have a dog. He's a yellow Labrador Retriever (4 years old). He's really big, but sooooooooooo funny and friendly. Heck, I think he'd even go to the thief in order to be petted. And he almost never barks. I almost always put him on a leash when I take him out, cos that's mandatory in parks, but he never never bites or attacks anyone. Hell, he even runs away when he sees another dog. I think he has dog-phobia :lol2:. He doesn't like fighting. And he's very good with kids. ;) I think Labs are just very calm. Small dogs are really impulsive, that's why I rarely go and pet them unless they come to me and sniff first.

By the way, check out this website, it's pretty cool, has a listing of all phobia terms. B)

And I have dentophobia - fear of dentists. Everytime I go to dentists I start having small panic attacks and when I sit on that chair, I start puking. :yucky:

Aulophobia- Fear of flutes. ???? Fear of flutes?

Is it that common that they have to have a word for it? :o

No phobias here... I'm not, nor have I ever been (as far as I remeber) scared of anything. Well, maybe scared of my hard drive crashing and me losing all data so I back up pretty often. But that's more of a "cautia" (as in cautious) than a phobia.

Hahah! That was funny! I never back up my files. I guess I haven't learned my lessson. I don't know, I just find it a pain in the @ss to back-up. Maybe I need to do it sometime soon, before my hard drive crashes (cos it's been having some identity issues lately :lol2:)... Hmmmm...

Oh yea, I remember once my hard drive crashed, and I was left with no computer for 10 hours (it happened at night). Man, was I pissed off! And I had hopes that I'd be able to connect the crashed hard drive as slave and transfer all the data to my master hard drive, but alas, that didn't work, cos apparently, the drive had been completely damaged.

I still haven't got over that shock.

LOL, weird, eh? Some of the terms are really funny.

These are my favourites (not to ridicule anyone who suffers from them, I'm just being a bit sarcastic):

Arachibutyrophobia- Fear of peanut butter sticking to the roof of the mouth :lol2:

Ithyphallophobia (look it up for yourself - rated R)

Nucleomituphobia- Fear of nuclear weapons. (what Bush suffers from?)

One missing term is: Saddamophobia - fear of Saddam Hussein (Bush has that). And another is: Bushophobia - fear of Bush (Saddam has it).
