Advances in computer graphics

I was at a talk today at UCLA about Level Set Methods and their applications in computer graphics and generating very realistic looking animations ... such as for smoke, water, fire, etc. Just take a look at this site and if you don't have time, just look at THIS animation of pouring water into a glass (about 3MB so sorry to modem users). Note: It may be easier to right-click and save-as first.

Wow. That's pretty - these guys are realy pushing the limits of computer animations... (and they have really fast connections! - I was downloading at nearly 400KB/s!!)

Of course, nothing is perfect (just check out the way the water stops flowing into the glass - it's kind of abrupt) But now I'm just being picky! ;)

Yah! Also if you look at the one where they drop the ball into the water, the water does not act at all on the ball ... only the ball on the water. Of course doing the reaction calculations is trivial to add to the simulation but it just shows how much stuff they have to worry about. But the movie industry here is really pushing these guys to push the limits.

The guy giving the talk was saying that they may incorporate these things on to next next generation graphics processors which I won't be surprised if they do. That's when you'll have some awesomly realistic looking games rendered in real time but looking like DVD movies!!!
