Who are these people?

This is from an old postcard - I don't have a better scan to read the writing, but can anyone recognise the Armenians depicted

(eg.: the guy at the right looks a bit like H. Abovian).

Also, it is a painting rather than a photograph - has anyone seen the actual painting, or know anything about it?

Could you put names to the faces, lets say working left to right, numbering them 1 to 9.

I was bidding for the card on ebay - it started at 10 dollars, but I had to drop out once it went above 30 dollars, 30 dollars just for a postcard is a bit much, no matter how important the Armenians are!

i hope you know who they are.

Thank's Harut

I have seen most of the names before, and know a little about a few of them. However, not one seems to have been mentioned in "Famous Armenians" before. So maybe someone who knows something about them in detail might post something.

Another question - is the scene entirely imaginary? Are those depicted from different time periods, or countries? Could they all have been gathered together like this or is it an entirely symbolic painting?

Note the symbolic "mother Armenia" figure to the left of the door and what looks like an idealised scene from Ani to the right. And Ararat at the top right.

  • 3 months later...

most likely it is imaginary.

just look at Abovian and Khrimian Harik.

Abovian is 11 years older that Harik.

but i wouldn't say that from that picture.

unless Abovian went through series of plastic surgeries.

I thought I had seen that portrait before and I had read who had composed it and when.

It is obviously a composition, a decoupage since very few of the pictured lived at the same time in the same place.

Ironically Abovian who looks the youngest of them is in fact the oldest. It seems like the faces from the available photographs were pasted over painted bodies, just as the props and the decor were painted. One must admit it is a good paste job.

From left to right, as identified in the postcard, their birth and death dates. I will also place in parantheses the age of the person at the time Khachatur vanished.

Raffi 1835-1888 [13]

Mikael Nalpantian 1829-1866 [19]

M. Peshiktashlian 1828-1868 [20]

Grigor Arzruni 18451892 [3]

Fr. Alishan 1820-1901 [28]

Cath. M.Khrimian 1820-1907 [28]

R. Patkanian 1830-1892 [18]

St. Nazarian 1812-1879 [36]

K. Avovian 1809-1848 [39 Obviously]

The next question. What are the paintings hanging on the walls?
