ALEX YEMENIDJIAN

CHAIRMAN AND CEO, METRO-GOLDWYN-MAYER, INC.

 

Alex Yemenidjian was named Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Inc. in April 1999. He oversees all operations of this diversified Los Angeles-based entertainment company, encompassing the production and distribution of motion pictures, television programming, music, and home entertainment product including video, DVD, and interactive media. The renowned 76 year-old studio includes the world-famous MGM Pictures, the specialty film unit United Artists Films, MGM Television Entertainment, MGM Networks, MGM Home Entertainment, MGM Consumer Products, MGM Music, MGM Interactive, and MGM.com. The Company's crown jewel is the largest modern film library in the world comprising 4,100 titles encompassing more than half of all studio-produced films since 1948. Also among the most honored in the world, this treasure trove collection includes celebrated films from MGM, United Artists, Orion Pictures, Goldwyn Entertainment, and PolyGram Filmed Entertainment.

 

Mr. Yemenidjian came to Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Inc. from a nine-year tenure at MGM Grand, Inc., an entertainment, hotel, and gaming company headquartered in Las Vegas, where he continues to serve as a member of the company's Board of Directors. He also held the position of President and Chief Operating Officer from 1995 to 1999. Prior to joining MGM Grand, Inc., Mr. Yemenidjian was the managing partner of Parks, Palmer, Turner & Yemenidjian, a certified public accountancy firm.

 

Since his arrival to MGM, the studio successfully released six consecutive profitable films, including: The Thomas Crown Affair, Stigmata, and The World Is Not Enough, which has become the most successful film in the 38-year history of the renowned James Bond franchise. On deck from the MGM and United Artists film labels for 2001 is a compelling, high-profile slate that includes Original Sin, an exotic thriller with Angelina Jolie and Antonio Banderas; the suspenseful cyber-thriller Antitrust, starring Tim Robbins, Ryan Phillippe and Rachael Leigh Cook; Hannibal, the highly anticipated sequel to Silence of the Lambs, with Sir Anthony Hopkins reprising his role as the infamous Dr. Hannibal Lechter; The Claim, starring Wes Bentley, Natassja Kinski, and Milla Jovovich; Heartbreakers, starring Gene Hackman, Sigourney Weaver and Jennifer Love Hewitt; What's The Worst That Could Happen?, showcasing Danny DeVito and Martin Lawrence; Rollerball, with Chris Klein, Rebecca Romijn Stamos, and LL Cool J; Hart's War, starring Bruce Willis and Colin Farrell; Windtalkers, headlining Nicolas Cage and Christian Slater; and Bandits, featuring Bruce Willis, Cate Blanchett and Billy Bob Thorton.

He received a bachelor's degree in business administration and accounting from California State University, Northridge, and a master's degree in business taxation from the University of Southern California.

Sony Pictures Entertainment which included Colombia earn in a quarter what entire MGM does in a year. Even tiny Newline(subsidiary of WB) earns more than MGM.

Alex Yemenidjian (b Dec. 27, 1955). Grandparent emigrated from Armenia to Argentina, where Alex was born. Family immigrated to the USA when he was a teenager. Has been called Kirk Kerkorian's alter ego. Frequent tennis parter of Kerkorian.

 

Alex Yemenidjian was named Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Inc. in April 1999, a position he resigned from on June 8, 2005 " to pursue other opportunities".

 

In addition to his business responsibilities, Mr. Yemenidjian presently serves on the Board of Directors of Kirk Kerkorian's Lincy Foundation and serves as Chairman of the United Armenian Fund.

 

He received a bachelor's degree in business administration and accounting from California State University, Northridge in 1977, and a master's degree in business taxation from the University of Southern California in 1982.

 

After heading his own accounting firm for eight years, Yemenidjian took an executive position at the holding company of his role model, Kirk Kerkorian. From there, he became chief financial officer, then president of casino company MGM Grand. In 1999, he was appointed head of MGM, the movie studio that Kerkorian controls.

 

Yemenidjian has been Kerkorian's go-to guy since the two were first introduced by a mutual friend in 1988. After leaving his CPA practice to work for Kerkorian's holding company, Tracinda Corp., Yemenidjian led his boss's unsuccessful hostile bid to buy Chrysler Motors in 1995. Five years later, after helping overhaul the MGM Grand, he assisted Kerkorian in putting together a $6.4 billion merger with rival Mirage Resorts.

 

Yemenidjian and Kerkorian aren't just close associates; they're more like father and son. Both are of Armenian descent, they talk every day, and most weekends they play tennis at Kerkorian's sprawling estate in Coldwater Canyon, not far from Beverly Hills.

 

He's married to his high school sweetheart and they have two children. He designs his own shirts, known for their wide collars.

 

Film star Antonio Banderas, child advocate Cheryl Saban, and MGM Chairman and CEO Alex Yemenidjian joined forces to chair “Noche de Niños” (“Children’s Night”) in fall 2004, which was a star-studded benefit for Childrens Hospital Los Angeles.

 

Alex Yemenidjian has been listed in Forbes' America's Most Powerful People.
