Environmentalism: Religion vs. Necessity

Nice article...and this (increased) use of coal is criminal IMO - an incredible source of pollution (with many negative affects - including tree death). I've witnessed the effects of these plant emmisions in the Appalacian Mountains - where dead trees abound - the cause - all the Nitrous and acidic emmisions form these plants. Additionally i am very familiar with the Mohave Generation Station - as it sits out in the (high) desert - where the skys are (normally) clear and pristine...and when your out there looking at the stars (more then you've even seen)...suddenly there is this high altitude haze - where it shouldn't be...etc etc...not good...when will people learn...???

This quote by Sir Hugh Rossi is somewhat famous - taken from here:

The coal industry must be dragged kicking and screaming into this century of the environment and live up to its responsibilities.

Though back then I don't think people were so keen on the ozone layer and all that - though what they are today is also debatable - but he was probably more on about physical/visual damage by the extractive process to ecology and all that.

Don't have the references to this one and would be interested in seeking it out, but I learned something quite nasty today. It is about coal reserves in China and how they are handled. They are being mined for the increasing internal and external energy demand. So far so good. However, the magnitude of a problem - an estimated 100-200 million tons are lost annually to coal fires, owing to the spontaneous combustibility of coal when beds are exposed or they are heaped out in the open without a protective layer of soil or something. And that is at least five times the quantity of coal they actually export. The carbon dioxide may well be as high as about 2% of the world’s total production of greenhouse gas from fossil fuels. And that is China alone - though I suppose its coaling activities would be proportionate with the country's size and population. Still - oh boy.
