well, this question is a very serious one! Although that thread " Will we survive.." was in a light manner it is a question carefully considered my most armenians as we know. I am always a person to think things emotionally, then in terms of "then what can we DO about it?" It is realy something an understand to be emotional because I've been down that road, but that is not the way forward. We should never take any thing as granted, and the armenian language country and heriaige is no exception!

 

But the thing I'm really thinking of is will there be an armenia? Withoun armenia will the diasporans dissapear? I m certainly not in the position to judge, no human bing can say IT WILL or IT WILL NOT but I think the likelihood is slim.

The thread on the language forum got me thinking whether the armenian language will die out completley. I am saddened and angered by the prospect, but there doesnt seem to be anybody coming forward with any real arguements on why it wouldn't, if anything, to the contrary.

 

I have heard some say that as long there is an armenia then there will always be armenians/a reason to reamain armenian. But that also made me wonder id there will always be an Armenia! Mof the ancient Armenian homeland is now clamied as "parts of Turkey" and now that's what most people know it as! Is that what will happen in the future, will Turkey and surrounding countries claim peices here an there if we will not become strong /OR gain strenth and lose it again? There are the questions that we also need to consider about our future. If that happenns then there is a MUCH stronger chance for our heritage to die than it is now!

 

The way I see it: strenthen and build Armenia. Concentrate on that, then we will always have a rich and diverse diaspora but somewhere of our own to have.

Yes there are reasons to believe that the Armenian language and the Armenian nation might be nonexistent a century or two from now. We discussed this in the "How long will we survive?" thread.

 

I think that when you ask most Armenians "Do you think there will be such a thing as an Armenian 100 years from now (which is not a long time)?" they somehow regard it as a very hypothetical, fun question. Unfortunately there are many real reasons for this question to be analyzed in a very realistic manner.

 

Many think that just because we have existed for 3000 years we are guaranteed eternal existence and success. Many answer based on emotions and not facts when they say "nothing will destroy the Armenian nation and language"

Language has nothing to do with nationality - nations can change their spoken or written language and still exist.

 

I am certain that Armenians as an identifiable national group will exist longer than (lets say) the English or the Dutch. I doubt that any person you can ethnically call "English" (as opposed to an inhabitant of a regional designation of the EU called "England") will exist 100 years from now.

 

Nobody is emigrating TO Armenia, so there is no change to the population's identity. Short of someone coming along and killing every Armenian in ROA, or the whole populating emigrating (will the last one to go turn off Metzavor) there will continue to be an Armenia (until the likes of President Bush make the whole world uninhabitable ).

well language hasnt got much to do with nationality, I've changed my mind since thinking of how America speaks english (WHY was it english???? Instead of German or Norweigan or Gaelic or Spnaish or whatever else??????) You know what else? Ireland speaks english, and they used to speak gaelic , and I am not sure on this but i think Scotland had it's own language too. Why dont they speak that either? Some Irish still keep that. They teach gaelic in their schools but the most wdely spoken language is still english.

What I was thinking of, is that I think we should try to preserve our language becauseit's an ancient and beautiful langaue, part of our culture, etc. Language is a big part of a nation's identity.

 

Language is one of the key solid things that people use to trace the ethnic make -up of nations. You use this to trace borrowings, etc. from other languaes from other nations that might have mixed in (for example, past wars /or invasions. ) it's not just from looks alone.

 

On the other hand, it might also be taken that A nation might have had control over a country but has nothing to do with the ethnic side of it. I know in a past post, I was joking about the Lenin soup, that was a silly example, but it's a point about the communist rule, taking over to the point of renaming so many things even the little things.

 

Now I know that England, Or daneland, Or Armenia, might very well BE lost as a nation just LIKE ay other country, and has to watch it's back for war, JUST like any other country. The difference is, we are surrounded my not only islamic countries but had a lot of trouble having control and invasions from the surrounding countries. is but need to build up our current situation, and our self esteem. One day what I would really like to see is to gain back those bits of ancient armenia from Turkey.

 

By telling this to the members I am most probably telling them everything they know already. I'm sorry if it's like teaching my grandmother to suck eggs, but by doing this I am including my personal opinions whist reveiwing stuff. I am only still new and learning these things!

 

Besides. I have a techical q. When bellthecat copied and pasted a symbol it looked like a match on my computer. Dont know if it was on anyone elses. Anyway I tried to copy it into my post, to include it myself, but ended up dragging it on the sad smily, and ended up being there and just showing as a match ever since! It appeared on other people's posts. I dont know if that was my fault. It's back on to the sad smily.
