After Iran became Muslim this names simply disapeared. But they became very common in Armenia because of the Persian-Armenian cultural ties during the pagan ages.

It can't be greek and it can't mean "male",
because "male" in ancient greek is "Andros".And the Armenian name that comes from it is Andranik(male).

Janiks, doesn't Andranik mean first?

Reffering to names in the Communist and internationalist vein. You need to remember how terribly dangerous the times were during Stalinism. People dissapeared simply because of their name. The lower dregs of society that worked for the NKVD for lack of real suspects would arrest people for such reasons as their Christian names, or distant famous relatives. These "low brow" elements were often afraid to arrest someone for just as innoccuous reasons as the person having a Soviet name, In those days, everyone lived in terror. Victims and victimizers. No one wanted to place his signature on a death warrant for a person with a name such as Lenin, Stalin, or Sovietakan.

Names have allways been powerful omulettes agaisnt evil, danger or sikness. Some of our grandparents may not have been rocket scientists, but they were very adept at survival.

Edward,

I wonder where do you get such information from? Do you know anybody that has been arrested for his name in the Stalinist era? Has it happened in Romania?

One million Romanians wer placed into boxcars and sent to Siberia after the second warld war.

The KGB basically decided that there had to be about a million anticommunists in Romania so their lackeys had to come up with a million bodies.

First they arrested all the former military officers and their families.

Than all the wealthy peasants.

Than anyone that might have been related to any nobility no matter how removed.

Then the Clergy.

When they ran out of people, than they simply arrested anyone who was denounced by anyone. No proof required. These Communists were generally the dregs of society. None were educated to any extent.

In those days, people placed pictures of Stalin where previously Icons had been. We were taught at school to call him Daddy Stalin. Terror ran rampant. You did not dare say good day to your neighbor because he might interpret it as a linckage to some international event.

As an amulet, people named their chilldren after some Socialist personality or event to frighten away the evil doers. Much like turkish Armenians giving their children turkish names.

Anahid is the same Diana goddess for Armenians. Read Diana in reverse.

Anahid is the goddess of prosperity, motherhood, wisdom, etc., while Astghik is the armenian goddess of youth, love and romance

Anahit being an anagram of Diana may be purely coincidental, if it is not then "Diana" would be loaned from the Armenian as the latter precedes the Roman godess. She is the godess of fertility and in earlier times also a godess of war. Anahit is believed to be the daghter of Aramazd. Some of her nickknames are "snoutzogh mayer" and "voske-mayer". Beside her identification with the Roman Diana she is also considered an analog of the Greek Artemis and the Egyptian Niith (here may be a clue to the Diana). The fact that Anahit is also an equivalent of the Persian godess Anahita explains in part the origin of the name. In old Persian (Pahlavi?), just like in the Armenian and other IE languages "an/ana" is a negative prefix to mean "without" and "hita" means blemish- Ana-Hita means without blemish, i.e pure, immaculate. Anahit was much revered and her cult so widespread that at one time the region of Bartzr Hayk was simply called Anahtakan.

Astghik, of course means "little star", as in Stella. It is the diminutive form of "astgh" which is a purely native Armenian word akin to the Avestic and Sanskrit "star", Tocharian "stella" and Beluchi "ishtar" (is there a message here?). Of course, not to forget "star" and "astre/astro" etc. in some of the modern European languages.
Astghik is the godess of love and beauty, she is akin to the Greek Aphrodite. She was also the patron godess of water and her symbol was the "vishap" and her feast was the Vardavar in the month of Navasard which is still celebrated.
