Modern Turkish words

 

 

In our quest to define our identity, our state and its respective institutions have taken a number of steps and “precautions.” Among these, we have the follow-ups of the “language revolution” aiming to weed out as many Arabic and Farsi loan-words as possible and elevate the importance and status of already-existing Turkish equivalents (usually taken from very localized parts of the country). In addition to this, we have also had new words produced to meet modern requirements. While some of them make perfect sense and are tolerable (words such as bilgisayar [computer], gerilim [tensile stress], gönderi [e-mail or other equivalent], etc.), we have also had ones which put the question of whether black humour was employed during the creation of these words. For example, instead of saying “CD,” our respective institution has produced the word “döner teker” – literally, turning wheel. Hamburger becomes “alttan ve üstten bastırmalı kıstrıgaç” (stuff that’s been pressed from both sides or something ridiculous like that). My favourite one: bus becomes “çok oturgaçlı götürgeç” (vehicle [we never use “götürgeç” but araç or vasıta from Arabic] with many seats; and we never use oturgaç but oturak in real life).

This is a “reactionary” movement: instead of using Turkish to accommodate for new and other Western words, they use Arabic and Farsi. Enjoy! (Of course, the Turkish characters are used sometimes and sometimes not – that makes it a bit cumbersome – converting “sut” to “şut” immediately – but fun, nevertheless!)
