The horoscopic constellation Aries that is known in the Armenian as ԽՈՅ/Khoy .

Is it related to the Armenian word ԱՐԻ/ari=brave

From the Armatakan.

ԽՈՅ = անմոլ արու ոչխար

To mean non-castrated male sheep.

Then it goes on to cite some ծակ գլոխ/holes in the head professors who say that it is from the furkish “koch/ghoyun” OH YEAH!!! Then why did Agathangelos use the word? Where did he get it from a thousand years before the world had heard of those non-people? Is it perhaps in reverse, since those damn people did not know what a sheep was until they arrived in Armenia?

And as to խոյակ /khoyak once again the Armatakan does not say much except that it means սիւնագլուխ , now we know why it is called column head=capital. Cap-capi/capo means head-գլուխ.

There is no etymology of “kochar” that I can find, (is it because it is not an Armenian word?) but the associated word “քոչւոր/kochvor” to mean nomadծվաչկատուն/ խաշնարած is very common.

The rest is technical about rhythm and so on.

**It is accompanied by “zourna and dhol”. Where does it say “oud and dumbek”?

Yes, in that other language “koch” , in fact “goecher” (sounds like the French “oe” a in “of=egg” ) means migrant/nomad. See how many surnames like “goecherian “you can find. Which brings us to kochar/ kochari/ kocharian. Just as “Koch” also means ram, yet both of those words are from that other language.

This below is a loooong strtch and full of holes, just like some say that “Dolma” is furkish and “Tolma” is Urarto-Armenian. How far can we stretch before it breaks and we become the laughing stock of the world. And that the dance “kochari” is based on the word “Koch” to mean ram/khoy , and that it means “koch-ari= brave as a ram”. Streeeeetch, and streeeetch more , se if anybody believes us. Don’y go by me. I still believe in Santa Claus and the Tooth Fairy.

Koch/Քոչ is an archaic IE term, as attested by the Persian cognate Ghooch/قوچ "male sheep, ram" * , and most likely entered "the other language" via Persian. Kochvor/Քոչւոր on the other hand, is a parallel (possibly even a borrowing) of the unrelated Persian Kooch/کوچ "to migrate".

 

In regards to Kochari/Քոչարի, considering the choreographic nature of the dance as the essential origin of the name, I personally don't think the Ղոչ/Քոչ-արի association is too far fetched. In fact, the movements of such a fundamentally rooted dance are much more likely to be the primitive imitations of the natural behavior exhibited by the animal rather than the communication of "migratory phenomena". The subject has been thoroughly discussed by Gagik Ginosian (leader of the "Karin" dance troupe, who recently won first place in the 2011 World Folk Dance Competition in Spain) in his ethnological dissertation.

 

* It is quite notable that various Iranian groups still refer to the wild Caucasian Mouflon (taxonym Ovis aries) the "Armenian ram"/"Ghooch-e-Armani"/قوچ ارمنی.

This was prompted when I was reading about Siamanto, that his nickname, penname means coq/cock/cocky,, rooster. See the silly ditty below.

Խոյանալ=Արշաւել, սլանալ, սուրալ, ընթանալ, նետուել, յախրձաիլ, խոյի պէս վրայ վազել, խուժել, դիմագրաւել:

ԽՈՅ, Khoy is the male of goat or sheep.**
