alpha
Some of the issues we discussed in our forum are becoming reality. I guess some people are reading what we write. Armenian diaspora in Lebanon backs plans of creating WAO.By Anatoly Golovastov ITAR-TASS News AgencyJanuary 23, 2003, Thursday 04:27 PM Eastern Time BEIRUT, January 23 -- Armenia's diaspora in Lebanon has supportedplans to create a world Armenian organisation (WAO). Armenia's diaspora in Beirut showed great interest in a visit toLebanon by a delegation of the Union of Russia's Armenians led byits president Ara Abramyan. The agenda of the visit was very intense.Every day the delegation has meetings with representatives of differentpolitical parties and organisations, businessmen, spiritual leadersof Armenian churches and journalists of Armenian language mass media. "I have not a minute of free time in Lebanon because I want to fulfilall tasks of my agenda, hold all meetings, visit all organisationsand brief all Armenia's diaspora circles on a plan of creating aworld Armenian organisation," Abramyan told Itar-Tass on Wednesday. "Lebanon was interested in concrete plans of creating a worldArmenian organisation put forth by the Union of Russia's Armenians,"Vice-President Apet Tapaltsyan said. "Armenian businessmen who cameto meet with Ara Abramyan said this idea should have been implementedlong ago," he pointed out. Abramyan's plans differ from traditional conditions of creating a neworganisation. Being a businessman Abramyan urges Armenians to unite bymaintaining close business relations. The Armenian diaspora in Lebanonwas surprised that he does not ask money for a future organisationto unite all Armenians irrespective their political visions andaspirations. "Let's stick to a new formula. We will do business andits profit will be sent to the needs of the future organisation,"Abramyan stressed. Abramyan expressed confidence that he will succeed in creating theworld Armenian organisation which will be stronger the Union ofRussia's Armenians. His interlocutors supported these plans. TigrannesIII
quote:Originally posted by MJ:Alpha, I, personally, don’t think that Diaspora Armenians have obligation to help Armenia financially. Besides, a very significant percentage of Diaspora Armenians is unsettled in its own turf. Actually, I think the other way – Armenia has obligation to help Diaspora. However, I am saddened that Diaspora Armenians, by in large, do not have a feeling of ownership over Armenia. As to the structures, I only believe in structures which have their center of gravity in Armenia. However, I always welcome anythhing positive that is being proposed for Armenia.About ownership----- how can we feel an ownership when many people in the Republic view us spiurgahyes as odar? Feeling angry at people will get you nowhere near Hovanissian, will it?

P.S. I don't mean anything you say, but above.I've talked to some hayasdantsis (in some cases even beirutsis) who think that other spiurgahyes are not armenian just because we're born in the odar land. I mean, if they want to say someone like THOTH, who has given up almost all aspects of the identity, is not Armenian, fine. I should have re-phrased, not many, rather some. On a personal note, I feel a dual homeland of the present-day republic and Kharpert. After all, 100 years ago Yerevan was just as Armenian as Kharpert, no? It's one country, not a bunch of small ones- Artsakh, Kharpert, Sepastia, Vaspuragan, Yerevan, etc.... just one, Hayasdan, land of the Hyes. Lev7
What is this conversation about who owns Armenia or who are "real" Armenians and who are not? All Armenians, Eastern and Western are one. Armenia is owned by no one, it belongs to the Armenians all around the world. Instead of naming names and separating Armenians into groups we should unite. I think every Armenian has an obligation to help the Republic of Armenia in some way, it is the only small portion of land we have left and we have to preserve it in every way we can !
