bellthecat
I saw this on ebay. It is a "Catholic Franciscan Missionary Postcard. depicting the martyrdom of the Franciscan Missionary P. Salvatore in Armenia". Salvatore is shown about to be stabbed by a Turkish soldier - a large crowd of individuals around him look like they are about to suffer the same fate. The scene is taking place in mountainous countryside. Anyone know who P. Salvatore was? http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...&item=722445281
wh00t
Why did the eBay police remove the item?

bellthecat
I can answer my own question. This is from a description of a book: BOOKLET : "L'ASSASSINAT DU PERE SALVATORE PAR LES SOLDATS TURCS " ( THE KILLING OF THE FATHER SALVATORE - A CATHOLIC PRIEST - BY THE TURKISH SOLDIERS " ; WITH A TESTIMONIANCY OF AGHASSY , ONE OF THE HEADS OF THE INSURRECTION OF ZEITOUN, TRANSLATED FROM THE ARMENIAN BY ARCHAG TCHOBANIAN, WITH A PREFACE OF PIERRE QUILLARD ; PARIS EDITION DU MERCURE DE FRANCE , 1897; 45 pp. THE MASTER PIECE OF THE HISTORY OF THE EVENTS OF ZEITOUN , THE ATROCITIES COMMITTED BY THE TURKISH REGULAR SOLDIERS ( AND NOT UNCONTROLLED TCHETES ) , THE KILLING OF A MISSIONAR THE FATHER SALVATORE BY THE SAME TURKISH SOLDIERS. ROMAN CHURCH IS ACTUALLY STUDYING A POSSIBLE "BEATIFICATION" OF THE FATHER SALVATORE, MARTYR OF THE FAITH , KILLED WITH AN EXTREME VIOLENCE BY THE TURKISH SOLDIERS. WE CAN FIND ALSO ABOUT THIS EVENTS ON THE MEMORIES OF PAUL CAMBON, FRENCH AMBASSADOR IN CONSTANTINOPLE DURING THE 1895-1896 EVENTS AND HAMIDIAN ATROCITIES
wh00t
Whoooops, didn't look at the date of the initial post. And yeah, eBay says age will be up for "up to 90 days" after end of auction. I'm not sure if I saved a copy of the postcard, I'll have a look, but I don't think I did. If I did I'll post it here.
Boghos
The translator was a major figure in early Armenian-french intellectual circles (whatever that was...).
Arpa
Here are two sites that tell all about that martyr. You'll be surprised how I located them. Thanks to Rouben's post about carpets I went back and started leafing that book about Christian Oriental Carpets and I was once a again surprised that of the people Marco Polo had talked about the subject(See the topic of carpets), and that he had mentioned among others that Armenia was the land where St. Blasius (Blaise in French) was martyred.http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/02592a.htm http://dubrovnik.laus.hr/dubrovnik1/html/b...st__blaise.html
Arpa
Or may be this is the martyr they are talking about.http://www.vatican.va/news_services/liturg...maloyan_en.html
bellthecat
Not the same martyr, Arpa. This martyr, Father Salvatori, was killed in 1895. I seem to have lost (or perhaps not saved) the picture.
Bakersfieldian
Keep in mind that Franciscan Missionary P. Salvatore's job was to convert us who did not bow down to there Pope. May the Lord have mercy on him and save him but he was not one of our Martyrs.
