G.Garanian was one of the first Russian musicians who attracted attention of Western world to "jazz from USSR". As a musician (saxophone-alto), conductor and composer he always was among the best Russian musicians. He organised "Melodia"- the best band of the 70 - 80 years, Moscow big band - also the the best in 1992-95 and now he has Municipal big band of Krasnodar with this band he already performed in the most prestigious concert halls in Moscow. G. Garanian recorded more music than any other jazz musician in Russia, performed at many international jazz festivals (Finland, Jndia, Indonesia, Cuba etc.), was on tours in Germany, USA, Japan, Australia, Sweden, France and many other countries. Frederick Starr in his book about Russian jazz wrote, that Garanian is one of the best jazz musicians in Russia. Starr quoted famous American critic John Hammond, who heard George at the jazz festival in Prague(Chechoslovakia) - "George Garanian is phenomenal". And person number one in jazz - the host of "Voice of America" jazz program Willis Conover invited him many times to participate at International jazz festivals in Hungary, Jugoslavia and other countries. At the present time George Garanian is one of the most "sought after" musicians in Russia. He is the only jazz performer who granted the privilege to perform 4 concerts annually in the famous concert hall "Bolshoy Zal Conservatory"( regularly the first place for the first names in serious music in the world). Last work of G. Garanian : he was the conductor of one week recording session in Moscow Radio House with famous US jazz quartet "Oregon" and best Russian symphony orchestra BSO. The material for recording was kind of mixture of contemporary jazz with symphony music. Steven Rodby ( srodby@pcc.net) was the producer. The result of recording session - more than 100 minutes of very impressive music (2 CDs supposed to be released at the end of 1999 in USA ).

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ On August 15, saxophone player George Garanyan, one of the legends of Soviet jazz, became 75. Garamyan was a teacher for many saxophone players, including Armenian jazz star Alexander Zakharyan. Last year, the he gave a brilliant concert in Yerevan, together with his «apprentice» Zakharyan,.

 

For over 40 years, Garanyan has headed «Melody» jazz band and conducted Armenian State Jazz Orchestra under the supervision of Constantine Orbelyan. George Garamyan also composed music for 40 films. He now runs a broadcast on «Kultura» Russian TV channel and gives solo concerts.

In his congratulatory address, President particularly says, «You are man possessing a wide range of creative abilities and talents, which makes you one of the renowned leading figures of our jazz art. Your brilliant masterly performance made you famous not only in Russia but also far beyond its borders.»
