Arpa
I have heard it said about the sound of church bells-Տանկալախներ ի- ժամ արեք Ding-a-ling? We have also spoken why at times in the Armenian church/եկեղեցի is called zham/ ժամ. That it is based on the fact that the church “wooden” bell would keep time every hour.See the abegha ring the bell at St James Cathedral at the Armenian Convent in Jerusalem. Also observe that there are two wooden bells, one large -hours(?) And a smaller one-minutes(?)I have also heard some people call it “campana”, the Latin/Italian word for “bell” **It seems like I had seen an audio-video of it, maybe not.http://www.christusrex.org/www1/ofm/sbf/escurs/Ger/07simandroBig.jpg** I can’t find a reliable source to tell us about its etymology. Let me opine. Is it based on the word “camp/champ” to mean field as in cowbells- http://www.fotosearch.com/bigcomp.asp?path=STK/STK021/PGB3422.jpgGetting back to the above large wooden bell and the smaller one . Is the Latin “campana” the larger one and “campanella” the smaller?Question. What is the meaning of “zhamergoutiun/ժամերգութիւն?
Sebastia
Arpa, as far as I know, zham is used also by the persians, meaning that it may not be an armenian word. The Armenian word for church is most likely Van. If there are more Churches or structures such as gates around it making it a "Church complex", we would easily add the prular -q next to it, making it Vanq. This is where the word Sevan comes from. Sev van - black church. As we know, the name of the lake is actually Gelama, and not Sevan. AS far as եկեղեցի is concerned, we need to consider that ղ = L, making it ekeletsi. Ekeletsi is simply Iglesi, a latin word which may have aramean roots, such as kilisa. Either way, that word is not Armenian. Here is the black church next to lake Gelama which somehow successfuly changed the lake's real name to "Sevan". http://www.advantour.com/img/armenia/sevan-church.jpg
