We as a people

Eire

Recommended Posts

Every year, over and over, we get together as Armenians and march in commemoration of the Genocide that took so many of us almost a century ago. Our people, who's bodies were strewn in the desert and covered by the sands of time, are brought back to life, once a year every year so as to remind the world just what it is that took place in Der-ez-Zor so long ago. We march, we shout, we cheer and we cry... and later on that night we pack our things and wait for next year, but what the hell have we learnt? What have we even accomplished?

It so sickens me to see the state our people are in. We live in foreign places, and build walls to only further set us apart. We give up our identities, we hide behind our new money and fancy cars and prefer to look away from the path we've trod to get there.

When have we ever stopped to ask ourselves just why it is that we deserve to survive?

It paints me so much to see what my people have become. Our nation is abandonned, run by a corrupt government, more concerned in keeping its grasp on power than by the welfare of its own citizens, sucked dry by greedy businessmen who could care less about the damage they cause, and held together by an all too powerful mob, that sees no trouble in murdering politicians and businessmen alike. It seems some sort of balance of power has been struck by this strange triumvirate.

Our organisations worldwide, even here in Canada, are organised by weak men, who have lost the passion of their youth and prefer to host mediocre events to distract us from the heap of decay that is our community. They prefer to stay divided and run things the way they want it, unable to let go of their firm grasp on the slightest bit of power and money. Even to the point where their actions have led to the death of their countrymen. We have all heard the stories of places like Lebanon, where brothers would kill each other for belonging to Hnchagtsoutioun and Tashnagtsoutioun.

Our community memebers are more concerned with their new cars, fancy watches and pathetic gossip than the cause their ancestors have sworn to protect. Alot show up to cultural events, only in hopes of parading the newest set of lavish gifts they smother themselves in.

Our youth act like bums, indulging in drugs and useless violence, most prefering to act like Black or Arabs from the ghettos, not even thinking twice about the honour in being Armenian that they so quickly set aside. They have forgotten the pride in their blood.

If we keep trodding this path, we will no longer stand a chance. Nature will quickly sweep us aside and condemn us to the pages of history. Like Sodom and Gomorrah, we are heading towards disaster and our community leaders are doing nothing to snap us out of it.

The Genocide the Turks began will now end by our own arrogance... and who will we blame then?

Blame, anything and everything except ourselves! this has become a way of life, no wonder why I don't go to the community centers.

Well said Eire and welcome to Hyeforum.

Yes indeed Welcome Eire.

Please stay.

You seem to be a good observer, unafraid to look inward once in a while.

Very thought provoking. You make many valid points, one of which the fact that on April 24 we all go to rallies and lectures, at which half of us sleep, waiting only to the end, we can’t wait until it is all over so we can proceed to the main event, the hogejash so we can gorge on such “genuine armenian” delicacies like gogma, gagma, gagstrma and imam gagildi. (When did imam become an word?) so we can go on our merry ways.

Hypocrisy has, should have lmits too!

You confirm what I have said numerous times, under various subjects that we blame everything and everyone, (we have mastered the art of “passing the buck“), good or bad on “them/they”**, whoever “them/ they” may be, but never look inward at ourselves, the perennial and proverbial “sacrificial lamb”. Lambs grow up to be adult sheep or more graphically RAMS (and at times bucks, male deer)with sharp horns. When will we stop being lambs and grow up to be RAMS? When will we stop “turning the other cheek” and tear the h… their (lower) “cheeks”. The Artsakh Saga may the beginning of a turnaround, only a beginning.

** See post no. 106 June 2 2007 here, one of many times I have spoken about “passing the buck”.

Yervant jan

I understand where you are coming from but you seemed to have missed the point of my article.

Its pretty simple to point fingers and take out all the digusting behaviour our community oozes, but in a time like this, being a man of principle and honour is a revolutionnary act, and God knows we need such men.

Go to your community center and get involved! find some people who think like you, we cant affort to keep these old passionless fools in power any longer, because we will die with them!

Eire Jan,

Believe me I didn't misunderstand your point of view. This is something that needs the younger generation to get involved from within and take over in time, and change the mentality. God knows how many times I've been invited to join this or that party, but unfortunately these are the same people that I can't stand to be with in the same room. I hope you catch my drift.

Yervant, watch out! You are imitating me and infringing on my trademark! You are treading in my territory. :) :D

One of my relatives (by marriage) is a highly placed officer in one of the factions (I will not grant the dignity of “political party”), she is extremely partisan, prejudiced, even bigoted, she constantly infers that I am not a legitimate Armenian, whereas both of my children are married to fellow Armenians, not all of hers are, were they running away from all that prejudice and bigotry? They don't even speak Armenian, mine do. What is the definition of "hypocrisy"?. She is , has been constantly after me to join her whatever. Every time we meet, we clash when she speaks “I, we do it, did it”, and that “they” are illegitimate. The last clash we had when she urged me to donate to “her cause”, which of course I declined arguing that why do we have so many “MY project”s. Look at those SOBs, they have only one association, one agenda and one project. They number over 200 (?) million, what is our problem that we don’t even number 2 million? How many more ways can we divide? Did we invent the science off mathematics and the subdivision of DIVISION?

I have never joined any of those so called “parties”, neither will I do, you may have noticed I am sure that I hit them both at right and left. I don’t even go to church where the main topic is always “us and them”. If I only knew who “us” is and “them “are.

I agree with you wholeheartedly.

I know alot of people that think the way that your relative does. The thing with them is that they are too old to change. This older generation of ignorant partisan armenians needs to die. A friend of mine has a minor position in tashnagtsoutioun and he thinks the way I do, but he knows as well as I do that he will never reach the top, because of those old idiots that are afraid of change.

Every year we have seperate events, even on april 24th, the tashnags do it at night while we do it during the day. I mean does this even make sense anymore?!

these stupid parties have turned the party into their nation. Every may they celebrate the first republic and scream getse tashnagtsoutioun, simply because the tashnags were in power at the time of independance. I dont hear Levon Ter-hryaian screaming "getse Pan-Armenian National Movement!" every september.

Anyways, im not goint to take the time naming every stupid thing we do as armenians. Im just going to say this:

All these old, socialist revolutionnary parties are dinosaurs. They are outdated and un-needed and they need to be whiped clean. we need a new beginning, a fresh start, so that we can rise again, strong and proud.

A little side note though. Dont be so quick to throw away the church my friend. Do not forget, it is the message and not the people you need to follow. Being christian is part of our heritage and part of why we were put to death. There is much more to faith than logic and numbers Arpa jan.

Are you one of those who equate ethnicity to religion? We have had a dew of the. Search and find. You may use "church", "christian" or "äpostolic"as your keyword.

I am not throwing away the"church, let me repeat the Church, except when the church has become anything but a church, a bingo hall, khash party, even worse- hnchak, dashank and ramgavar club, where dogs are are welcome but the "others"are not..

And as to us being Christian. How far back does our history go? some say 5000 years, others 4000 years. How many of those years have we been "christians"? The last I heard, itis less than 2000 ( 1700) years, i.e less than one third of the time.

ethnicity and religion, no, but culture and religion, yes. And culture is part of ethnicity.

as for what youv said of the church, I agree with you. I wont tell you where I am from just in case, but our serpazan here is a very close friend of mine... hes also crooked and corrupt. but as armenians, we are afraid to speak out against the church because it is one of the pillars of armenianness. Refrorm the church! rebuild the church! dont turn your back on it.

anyways Id rather a pagan to a muslim, but as for christianity being a small part of our culture, it is probably what set us apart, and now our entire traditions and values come from it. Once again, dont be so quick to dismiss it as useless. When you die and your children are old, what values will they follow? What traditions will they belong to?

Being Armenian is being a part of something huge. Religion, values, tradition, culture and language are all many parts to the equation.

Dear Eire, let me welcome you again.

You seem to be quite young, passionately and romantically idealistic.

Please excuse some of us cynical old farts, like me, yervant and others, since we have seen and gone through all those phases. And we have lasted so long here at the Forum simply because we don't mess around with partisanship etc. while many a passionate ones have come and gone within days. Please stay. :)

Why not? Because, I don't have a dog! The garbage people are on strike! And I just cut the grass yesterday. :D

Yes, we heard about the stink about sanitation strike. Neither do I have a dog, even though I will have a hot dog once in a while. :P

What a coincidence! I cut my grass yesterday too, couldn't have done it sooner or later, right now we are having thunder and lighting and cats and dogs are pouring from the sky. :)

Btw. I can't remember a July this wet. It may be making up for the dry April.

Arpa Jan i thank you for your kindness

please excuse my agressiveness. I cut myself shaving and am still moody over it. :P

It is true that my passion may seem excessive, but I have seen too many of the friends Iv grown up with turn to drugs and crime due to the fact that they lost touch with their own people. A man without roots is not a man at all.

I want my people to wake up and see that there is something greater then them.

Maybe I am just a dreamer, but at least its a dream worth fighting for.

You cut yourslfe shaving?

What kind o razor do you use.

Of course there will always be a (true ) story. I use one of those those fixed edge disposable razors. During one of my visits to Yerevan, this man was a little late to come down to the lobby, when I say "man" he is a physician, a surgeon no less. He had a gash on his face bigger and deeper than the Grand Canyon. I said, "wait a minute, what razor do you use"? He told me, I forget now. I said, "Wait here for a minute", I went back to my room and brought one of those disposables and I said "Here, you cannot cut yourself with this even if you wanted to".
