YEREVAN, Sept 27 (Reuters) - Armenia's president has fired his bodyguards pending an investigation into the death of a man at a jazz club where he was entertaining French singer Charles Aznavour, the presidential press service said.

Newspapers said the man had tried to approach Aznavour on Tuesday night in the "Aragast" club, one of Yerevan's top night spots, while he was with Armenian leader Robert Kocharyan.

The newspapers cited eyewitnesses as saying that the man, a 43-year-old Georgian called Pogos Pogosyan, made a personal remark to Kocharyan after being stopped by his bodyguards.

Kocharyan later left the club which is a popular haunt of Yerevan's political and business elite. The man's body was later found in a toilet at the club.

Aznavour, who is of Armenian origin, was in Yerevan to take part in ceremonies surrounding the visit of Pope John Paul.

He gave a rendering of "Ave Maria" when the Pope led prayers Wednesday at the city's memorial to the 1.5 million Armenians killed in the early 20th century.

"Given that this took place after the departure of the President and that in several press reports the incident is being linked with the security service of the President, Kocharyan has ordered that the bodyguards...be relieved of their duties until inquiries have been completed," a presidential press statement said.

It said Kocharyan had insisted that the investigation be impartial.
