Arpa
http://lionkingdom.nl/lf001e.htm LEVON the LION I have often wondered why many non-African nations depict the LION, the symbol of power and authority on their flags and symbols, including Armenia, Iran and such distant lands as Britannia. When and how did Armenians know about the LION? Was there lions in Armenia at one time? We don’t know. We have not yet dug that deep in archeology and paleontology. Zartonk
Though by nature an animal admired by most peoples, the presence of the majestic Panthera leo persica in our cultural ethos is undeniable. Zoology is fairly certain that the dominion of the 'Asiatic lion' once stretched over a large area of the Eurasian landmass, possibly extending from the shores of the Mediterranean to the easternmost regions of Indian subcontinent, perhaps encompassing portions of the Armenian Highland. To the best of my knowledge, the beast became extinct -or at least was depopulated- in Armenia by the first centuries of the common era. In modern times, and in the broader vicinity of Armenia, however, the last sightings were reported in the lush jungles of the Caspian provinces of Iran at the beginning of the 1900s.
