Sip
That's way too many to go through! If we each took a letter, it'd be doable. I caught another boxer, boxing for Russia. I think it was Arutiunyan, but I might be wrong. Here YOU go. I scraped the list of athletes on the beijing2008.cn site for all the ian's and yan's. You can thank me later Of course I stripped out Equestrian, Russian, Syrian, etc but left most names in there for fun (even though some are clearly not Armenian). Sip
Aprahamian - Judo - Uruguay This one is missing from my list because I was specifically looking for Last name followed by first name and this one doesn't have a first name. I'll retry mine later to see if I missed anything else of this type.
Zartonk
Way to compile the lists guys. Look like Armenia has more than just 25 repsresented If only... EDIT: On a second thought, they are all OlympIANS... Edited August 14, 2008 by Zartonk

Nané
Wrestling controversy as angry Abrahamian refuses bronze medal Posted 6 hours 8 minutes ago Updated 5 hours 40 minutes ago The Swede, who won the silver in the Athens Olympics last year, grudgingly climbed the podium but stormed off in a huff after receiving his prize, which he left at the centre of the competition mat before stalking off the stage with a raised clenched right fist. Abrahamian thought he had beaten Andrea Minguzzi, the eventual gold medallist in the 84-kilograms division in the semi-finals, but the match was awarded to the Italian. "I don't care about this medal. I wanted gold," he said. A bitter Abrahamian, silver medallist at Athens 2004 who had high hopes of top honours in the 84kg competition in Beijing, announced he was quitting the sport. "This will be my last match. I wanted to take gold, so I consider this Olympics a failure," the 33-year-old said. The Swedish wrestler had to be restrained by team-mates earlier when the row erupted with judges over the decision in the semi-final. Abrahamian shouted at the referee and judges then went over to their seats to speak to them up close. He angrily threw off the restraining arm of a team official then turned and left. Swedish fans booed loudly as the judges filed out of the arena. Abrahamian said nothing to waiting reporters but whacked an aluminium barricade with his fist as he left the hall. The Swede came back strongly in the repechages to claim one of the two bronzes alongside Nazmi Avluca of Turkey. The medal was later returned to the sport's governing body. -Reuters Tags: sport, olympics-summer, other-sports, wrestling, china

Those who reported the match were all finding it unfair. There isen't much coverage of what really happened, read the blog and the exchanges here you'll get a picture: http://www.yardbarker.com/olympics/article...nze_Away/305805 Anyone who gets stolen like this by a corrupted judging system should do the same. You don't expect him to smile while recieving that medal are you? Edited August 14, 2008 by DominO

Zartonk
Here is what a few Swedish wrestling fans had this to say about the incident: 'Well, it certainly seems that Abrahamian was right. After losing the first round in the semifinal, he was in the end of the second round given a warning for not "opening up" at a parterr (right word?). Seemingly the only such warning in the tournament this far, and nobody beside the referee seems to have seen any sights of Abrahamian behaving differently than any other wrestler in that situation. He was also given a warning for escaping the ring, even if he did not do that. The official protest from Swedish team was denied, since "protests were against the rules". However, the paragraphs state that such kinds of disputes should be checked on video. Swedish wrestlers have for four years argued that Abrahamian was robbed also of the gold medal in Athens, when he lost the final. Evidence was then found, later, that the Romanian referee was given a bribe of roughly 100,000 pounds to let the Russian wrestler win. The Russian leader was during that whole match giving signs to the referee. FILA decided also that time to not bring the case up to discussion. Abrahamian himself claims that Minguzzi was in very poor shape only three weeks ago, and a Mr Nobody in wrestling until today. He blames the Italian vice president in FILA. Italy had no previous wrestling gold. But who knows what it really is about... I'm a Swede by the way. And anyway, there's so much dishonesty in sports... ' - 'When it comes to Ara's rather strong reaction it follows years of well questionable decisions in various finals. In 2004 he was stripped off the Gold medal after decisions made in favor of Russian Alexi Misjin whose coach were signaling to the referee what to do during the game (which actually isn't allowed). When he now was disqualified for escaping from the wrestling surface (which he wasn't doing..) then it was one to many. Sadly, the sport of wrestling has been filled with corrupt/bribed referees and organizations which Pelle Svensson, a former member of FILA has testified to. Mr Svensson did try to change the organization back in early 2000 by submitting a request about a rule change were the wrestlers "pulled a referee out of a hat" before the match which would stop any questions about bribery/fixed matches. This was however strongly opposed by FILA and Mr Svensson "decided" therefor to step down as a member of FILA. In addition to this must the following be considered. The winner of the match is Italian, the referee is from Switzerland, the president of Fila is Italian.. If you consider these facts then you can understand the anger and frustration one of the greatest 84 kg wrestlers feels. This will hopefully, although I doubt it will, lead to a complete restructure of wrestling in order for it to survive as the wonderful sport it really is!' - 'At the end of the second period Ara Abrahamian successfully defended himself against the italian and was, after great hasitation from the ref, awarded one point which won him the second period and making the total score 1-1. During the intermission the ref on the side stepped in and ruled that the swede had escaped from the mat, took away Abrhamian's point and awarded one point to the italian wrestler instead. The rule states that in order to make such a call the wrestler need to have at least half of his body in the blue field of the mat and at most Ara Abrahamian had his left hand "out of bounds". The Italian had at one point his whole upper body in the blue field without any actions from the referees. Instead of starting the third period the refs called an end to the match declaring the italian as winner, and the Swedish team went nuts. In a couple of seconds Abrahamian not only lost the point the ref had awarded him, but also the entire match. The swedes filed a protest but it was turned down with officials refusing to watch the video from the match. You have to bear in mind that I'm Swedish but still, this is one, big scandal!' shield-maiden
Let them say he is Armenian. Doesn't bother me a bit. Corruption is corruption, and emotions are emotions. Are we only to support Armenian athletes when everything looks nice...? He and the Swedish delegation could have lodged a formal protest in a civilized manner, instead of throwing a public tantrum and spoiling the awards ceremony for everyone else involved. This is unsportsmanlike behavior and is a shame for both the athlete and the country he represents. Why should we show him support anyway? He certainly isn't representing Armenia, and any medals he wins won't benefit Armenia/Armenians whatsoever. Even if he was representing Armenia we still shouldn't support bad behavior. I'm glad they aren't calling him an Armenian and that all of the athletes who do represent Armenia have conducted themselves in a professional and respectful manner, even when they lost. vava
It's the same situation as the figure skating fiasco in the winter olympics when Canadians Salle & Pelletier were finally offered to share the gold medal due to a admittedly corrupt French judge. If wrestling was a higher profile sport with more sponsorship money & tv coverage, there would be universal outrage right now.

shield-maiden
if he won the match, denis forov from armenia would have had a chance for bronze... If there was anything shady was going on then let Sweden prove it and the medals can go to their rightful owners. It's so easy to be a Monday night quarterback after the game. Try to put yourselves in his shoes and try to feel how it feels to be robbed in daylight under the watchfull eyes of millions. Good for him, he is one courages man. We need more people like him in order to expose the corrupted officials. What does monday night quarterback mean? And why am I such a thing? Why throw out a personal jab against me when I didn't insult anyone here and was only giving my opinion? There were thousands of other athletes there, many of whom I'm sure felt the judges "cheated" them, but they didn't behave in such a manner. By the way, if this was a Turk or Azeri or even any other non-Armenian, what would the reactions be? I highly doubt the the words courageous would be used then. What's courageous is being able to control oneself under pressure and not embarrass the nation you're representing when the whole world is watching. DominO123
Did you read? The federation is the one accused there, and it is also the side which has to arbitrate in such cases. What he did was the best thing, they rejected a hearing after evidence of bribary on the 2004 olympics. Had he not done this, it would have been ignored. If there was anything shady was going on then let Sweden prove it and the medals can go to their rightful owners.
