Karen
To all those in the Spyrk. Please, spread this sad news from Javakhk, Georgia. As you might already heard, Georgians on July 20-22 - in 48 hours - crashed the United Javakhk Alliance. United Javakhk Allianc is/was the only organization, capable to protest the Kars-Akhalkalaki railroad construction, which one of the main links in panturkic corridor arounf Armenia. Alliance was fighting against expulsion of Armenians from Javakhk (in the course of so called "white genocide" just like it happened in Nakhijevan before). Javakhk Alliance fought against redemption of Armenian churches from Armenian community and their subsequent georganization. In so many words - it was the stone in the Georgian shoe. Now the active Alliance members are arrested and brought to prison on the made-up charges of alleged illegal firearms possession, etc. The Georgian SWAT operates in the region, controls the city of Akhalkalak and suburbs. Two local Armenian police were shot under unspecified circumstances - allegedly by Georgian SWAT to blame local Armenians and to have the case against Alliance members. Please, spread the word to your local Armenian organizations (ANCA, AAA) as Armenian mass-media is silent on the matter, not to mention Georgians. We can't afford loosing our "Northern Zangezur" (Javakhk). We can't afford loosing yet another province of Armenia. Georgian authorities trying to exterminate Armenian population of Javakhk? 21.07.2008 13:51 GMT+04:00 /PanARMENIAN.Net/ On July 17, 2008, no one suffered from an explosion near the house belonging to Akhalkalaki police chief Samvel Petrosyan. Immediately after the explosion, Georgian forces launched a hunt for members of United Javakhk democratic alliance. Policemen rushed into their apartments and also into the premises of the Alliance-owned Youth Radio. The police also searched the house of Gurgen Shirinyan, activist of United Javakhk and head of Scout Movement of Javakhk. During the search, policeman Arthur Berujanyan, 23, was killed under mysterious circumstances. Gurgen Shirinyan, whose whereabouts is unknown, was accused of the murder. There is information that Georgian special forces were instructed to kill Shirinyan, the man who, as a witness, can cast a light on the process. Rustavi 2 Central Georgian TV channel reported Shirinyan as a gang member who has nothing to do with United Javakhk According to BAGIN Information Center, some two dozens people were brought to police in Akhalkalaki; Georgian special forces were quartered in the Armenian-inhabited region. “Obviously, the explosion is a recurrent provocation meant to make the Armenian region more subordinate to Georgian authorities and to ksuppress national attitude of mind in Javakhk. United Javakhk is known as the most influential political force capable to resist georgification of the population. All this happens with tacit consent of the Armenian authorities,” the information center said.

VartanM
Via Open Armenia JAVAKHK NEEDS HELP OF THE WHOLE ARMENIAN WORLD Dear compatriots, The democratic alliance "United Javakhk", a grassroot NGO advocating for human rights of Javakhk Armenians, was attacked and crashed without any solid legal grounds by the Georgian special police units in the city of Akhalkalak. Here is the brief chronology of events: July 17 An explosion near the house of Akhlkalak chief of police Samvel Petrosyan. This is allegedly a provocation set up by the Georgian special police units, looking for an excuse to start harrassing local Armenian public initiative organizations. July 17 - 18 Attack on the house of Gurgen Shirinyan (member of "United Javakhk" alliance, head of local Armenian Scouts Movement) by the Georgian special police units with the support of local police. Shirinyan's relatives were severely beaten. One Armenian policeman (Arthur Berujanyan) was killed under suspicious circumstances during the attack. Weapons found at Shirinyan's dwelling were allegedly planted by the Georgian special police unit to make up the case against him. Shirinyan went on a hide-out to the local mountains. July 18 - 19 Random arrests of "United Javakhk's" members in the city of Akhalkalak. Warrantless/unsanctioned searches in their houses, etc. July 20 Killing of yet another Armenian police officer (Armen Gabrielyan) under unspecified circumstances. He was last seen entering an abandoned house in the outskirts of Akhalkalak, accompanied by the Georgian special police unit. It is alleged the this Armenian police officer was eliminated as a witness of the killing of the first police officer by the Georgian special police unit during the attack on Gurgen Shininyan's house. July 20 – 21 Arrest of "United Javakhk" leader – Vahagn Chakhlyan and members of his family (brother Armen Chakhalyan, father Rouben Chakhalyan). His family members were verbally attacked, humiliated and then were severly beaten. Searching his house without formal legal ground (no sanction from relevant authorities) and without maintenance of the due procedure. At the current moment: * Over 500 Georgian special police officers are stationed in Javakhk region of Georgia (this is in addition to the regular police force); * Over 20 members of "United Javakhk were thrown to jail without due course/legal procedures; * The Georgian operatives too control over local internet provider and independent radio station. A number of other local media outlets are shut down, which effectively limits freedom of the media and access of the general public to infromation for the local population; * The office of "United Javakhk" had been illegally searched and weapons were "found" (allegedly all planted by the Georgian police units); * The population of Akhlkalak and the entire region is under the constant threat of a illegal arrests, beatings and other mass violations of human rights; * Armenian and Georgian media and state authorities do not comment the situation. ACT NOW! Call your local Armenian grassroot organizations and ask them to act - issue statements, write letters to international human rights organizations, spread the word about the injustice in Javakhk etc. Protest mass arrests, beatings and killings in the region. Demand Georgian authorities to free the arrested "Unified Javakhk" members, who in fact are harrassed and arrested for their political views and must be seen as political prisoners. Demand adequate transparent investigation of the matter by combined Armenian-Georgian task force and/or by independent and trusted international experts.
