alisa
Hi guys. I saw that there is several other people here interested in electronic English-Armenian dictionary. It is a little odd that many armenians lives abroad but there is not a single decent professional Armenian-English-Russian electronic dictionary. And after all the Armenian is one of the oldest languages, as old as Latin, Greek and Hebrew. Ok, what I am proposing is development of cross-language dictionary between English, Armenian, Russian and may be one or two other languages. We had also developed something like that. Our dictionary is called Arabella and contains 46 000 words. As an auxiliary language we had added Bulgarian language (it is close to Russian, there is more then 80 000 armenians living in Bulgaria but it is impossible to find even a printed hardcover Bulgarian-Armenian Dictionary). I would like to know your opinion. I had attached screenshots below:
Johannes
Hi Alice (Elisa?). Editing of dictionaries is not the job of Armenians, but the job of academicians & professors. Let me cross my best wishes for the success in your aim. You may send message to "Nor Hayastan" and "Shahan Araradian", because they were too eager about new dictionaries. alisa
Hi Alice (Elisa?). Editing of dictionaries is not the job of Armenians, but the job of academicians & professors. Ok, I agree that it is better if a dictionary is edited by academicians & professors. However it requires a lot of time and work to make a dictionary from zero. Nobody is talking about this. I am talking about making electronic dictionary based on pre-existing electronic and hard-covered dictionaries. This can be made from one programmer and anyone who know Armenian. My proposal is very realistic. If we get to work we can make a very good and professional English-Russian-Armenian-Bulgarian dictionary for only 3 mounts. Sip
I don't understand what you are proposing. Do you already have this dictionary or you are trying to create it by taking existing dictionaries? Also, if you are going to take existing dictionaries, do you have the proper permissions? And what dictionaries are you going to use?
Garo
If you can provide me with your database of 46000 words and their translations I can have the online dictionary site setup. We have some other members interested in working on such a project and bulk importing 46000 willl be a good start. PM me for more information on how to send the database to me. Arpa
Yes! It is me again. Please allow me to second Johannes' Motion. There may be dozens of so called dictionaries for sale, yet I have not found even one worth erkou luma. What we need is a prodessionally prepared and edited dictionary. And I don't mean just linguists. I mean professionals and scientists of all the disciplines. Case in point. The screen shot above shows us "adipose", and it proceeds to tell us that it means "յուղ" in Armenian. First off the word is not ՅՈՒՂ it is ԵՂ, ԵՈՂ or ԻՒՂ. The jury is still out as to which is the correct spelling. All that aside. First off a compiler of an Armenian dictionary must know the Armenian, Latin, English, Russian, Bulgarian and Zimbabweian languages to know enough that adeps/fat/jarp/jarb are not synonumous with oil/iugh/yough.** When I say a dictionary should be compiled by scientists of many disciplines. Adipose is from the Latin "adeps" to mean "fat". Correct. Yet we fail to see that "fat" is not the same as "oil". The latter known as "yugh/iugh" in Armenian is of vegetable source just as the English oil, Latin olio and the French huile, and it is usually in a liquid form while fat is of animal source and it usually in a solid form, better known as JARB/CHARP/ ՃԱՐՊ in Armenian. I get carried away. My message is... Please let us have professionally prepared dictionaries. I can remember when we had a so called dictionary prepared and edited by students in Armenia, which is mercifully removed now, where every other word was attributed to furkish origin. (I can dig out my indignation of the time). Once again. Please! Let us have a good professioanlly prepared dictionary that delves into etymology, and is prepared by scientists who know the difference between "adipose" and "oleic". ՃԱՐՊ and ԻՒՂ. After all, in the English/Latin language "adipose deposit" in the blood vessels, sometimes known as cholesterol is not described as "oleic deposit". Dear Alisa. Why do some of us feel the need to have a special dictionary all for ourselves wether we live in Afghanitan or Zululand? Those of us who know the Armenian Language know how certain words would be spelled and pronounced, be it it in Latin, Persian, Sanskrit, Russian, Bulgarian or Zimbabweian. What we need least is dictionaries that tell us the Armenian word for "evolution" is "yevolutsia/ԵՎՈԼՈՒՑԻԱ". ** Please read some of the posts by SAS, Johannes and me and see if you can read and understand them. alisa
I don't understand what you are proposing. Do you already have this dictionary or you are trying to create it by taking existing dictionaries? Also, if you are going to take existing dictionaries, do you have the proper permissions? And what dictionaries are you going to use? Ok, I will try to answer to your questions. 1. ... what dictionaries are you going to use?? For now the dictionary contains translations from the following sources: 1. The Concise Oxford Dictionary 2. The Oxford Thesaurus An A-Z Dictionary of Synonyms. 3. webster dictionary 4. A.E.Muller English-Russian dictionary 5. English-Russian dictionary 6. Russian-English dictionary 7. Ефремова Т.Ф. 8. С.Ожегова Толковый словарь 9. Словарь иностранных слов 10. Медицинский словарь - OXFORD 11. SA dictionary Bulgarian-English 12. SA dictionary English-Bulgarian 13. Божидар Стефанов "Кратък Речник Термини, Околна среда, екология..." 14. J. Stenesh Dictionary of Biology If you have some good armenian-russian or armenian-english dictionary in any text format it would be from big help. 2. ....do you have the proper permissions? Well..., we had not think about that. I dont think that there would be a problem. All of these dictionaries have printed copy or are available online. Also all of the text in English, Bulgarian and Russian sections is manually edited. 3. Do you already have this dictionary or you are trying to create it by taking existing dictionaries? Well, the dictionary is under development. Programing and interfaces are already made. My boyfriend is software developer . The dictionary has an special optimized database which allows it to work very fast land to use only about 50 MB RAM (that was for the full version which contains 350 000 words). 4.... what you are proposing? I am proposing to split the database and everyone here to take a piece of it. The only requierment is to know Armenian and English (Russian and Bulgarian is also Ok). The interfaces of the dictionary are quite convenient (we may improve them if there is problems) and you will edit it much faster then if you use word, excel or web. Anyway if you like it more I may try to send you the crude text in excel. For a 1-2 hours per day it is normal to complete about 1500 words per mount (at least that is my speed . The work is editing of the english section and adding corresponding meanings for armenian. For example for the word bluing, it is necessary to edit the following text: ---------------- bluing ['blu:iŋ] (p. pr. & vb. n.) of Blue Bluing (n.) The act of rendering blue, as, the bluing of steel. Bluing (n.) Something to give a bluish tint, as indigo, or preparations used by washerwomen. ---------------------- And of course to add translation to Armenian. I hope that I answered you. All other details we will discuss later. If you can offer something better I am eager to listen

Do you think that you can make a project for people to format and edit the text through web? Would it be fast enough?
alisa
Arpa, Just one word "յուղ" = "ԻՒՂ" , we are using Eastern Armenian. The words "ԵՂ", "ԵՈՂ" are dialects. I dont have intentions to make evolution of Armenian The english meaning of all english words are taken from Oxford and other independent reliable sources. Even if someone is not expert in a field he should be able to understand and translate it. The only exception is if it is a special terminology and he dont know the Armenian word. These words however are not so much. Also there is also translations of all words to Bulgarian and Russian and they are from different sources, if there is error in the English tab, which is very improbably, it will become clear from the Bulgarian and Russian explanations. Anyway, if you feel expert in some area, you can always correct or add something in the dictionary. Any help is welcomed. When did Armenia become so big as to have an east, west, north and south? Even people in a country of over 400 million souls, all the way from Manitoba, Minnesota to Missipipi speak the same language and write te same way. What is so special about us "eastern and western Armenians"? Even those damn furks have one language. Why do we have 4 different separate languages, east, west, north and south? Yes. Let me repeat. Those who don't know the difference between adeps/fat, and Oil/iugh have no place in the business of dictionaries. And now. We are to compile a dictionary based on Bulgarian? Don't you know that the Armenian word for "bulghur" is "tsavar"? It may be time that we have people who know the Armenian Lnaguage, not American, Afghani, Zimbabweian, or even Bulgarian to compile ARMENIAN dictionaries? Not those who don't know the difference between YUGH and JARP. Edited June 12, 2008 by Arpa

You will see how some of us have used very strong “language” asserting that Istanbul Armenian is the legitimate heir to Mashtots’ Grabar, (See that clown Shahan AraraD-ian, who does not even have the decency to admit that his name should be AraraT-ian, never showed us how and where, all the way from the Bible, that Տ= D. Let me ask again. How big are we? When over a BILIION, yes that is with the letter B Chinese have one standard orthography. Who are we to have ONE ORTHOGRAHY FOR EVERY ONE OF US, i.e 8 ??? Million??? More than half of whom does not the difference of Ա/ա from a comb!! If we continue this inane debate, those people will never learn the difference between ա and w. There are 100 million Chinese for every ONE of us. Yet, we propose ten billion separate linguistic and dialectical systems! What we need is a Tigran II, not to mention Muskaka Kakaturk to smash a few heads and unite the nation. If only I could be a king for a day!!! And then, of course we have crackpot linguists among us who don’t know the difference between J=Ճ and CH=Չ who, when they see ՃԵՆԱՑ transliterated to ChEnats - Will say-Oh, Oh! Spelling error ! It should read ChInats!! Note the E/Ե and the I/Ի. Edited June 14, 2008 by Arpa

All of us who live outside of Armenia are pretty much done, kaput. How many years you gonna keep up with your dialect? 100-200? Look at those Fresno Armenians who came right after the Genocide. There is nothing left Armenian about them, and most of them don't speak the language either. Are you sure that your grandchildren would speak Western Armenian? The reason western Armenians kept their culture and language is because they lived among Muslims for the most part. Now we live in Canada, USA, Australia, etc. How long you are going to keep this up? I think you should give up your games and get on with the program. I know you face is red right now as you are reading this. ha ha. But hey, somebody got to deliver the news to you... Stop knocking Erevantsis, people speak that dialect for over 100 years now. Stop calling your fellow Armenians stupid. Stop calling Mashtos by his first name, you are not his friend. Come on, stop being a riot here. I respect the fact that you know Linguistics well, but stop putting other people down just because they have different dialect and 36 letters and 3 sounds. Sip
ANY language and any culture ... the point is that physical location is much less important as it is very possible to interact will all sorts of people and all sorts of groups due to the tools technology is giving us (and will give us). I hear people say things like oh Armenians in the US willl disappear in a couple of generations ... and I just don't think that is necessarily going to be that way since you can't compare the current times with that of even 15 or 20 years ago ... let alone from a whole generation or two ago. Ashot
Sip jan I do strongly agree with you that we interaction is not only very possible but, it is the way that we live now - there are too many different ways to learn and keep the language and the culture - number one is the small schools that do teach Armenian, however - this whole western easter southern northern Armenian stuff is just getting on my last nerves... How dare people set so manny differences between us Armenians - it has gone far enough... Dashnaks against Hrchaks, AYF agains UYF, western Armenian against eastern Armenian... when will this catastrophy end? isn't it enough that all Armenians have to deal with too much B.S. in the worl politics and now we are just simply going against one another? We may be able to pass it to our grandchildren, but would they pass that to their grandchildren and so on, living in Spyurq? Very very difficult. Arpa
I have no problem with neither Western or Eastern dialect. I understand both and have friends that use both dialects. I mean, If we go back couple of hundred years, most Armenians spoke the same dialect for the most part. As far as preserving the language, it is possible Sip, but it would be very difficult thing to do outside of motherland. Time will kill it all. We may be able to pass it to our grandchildren, but would they pass that to their grandchildren and so on, living in Spyurq? Very very difficult. I think you are intentionally(?) misreading my comments. Ye, we do know that the Armenian Language in the Spryurq is a matter of time. Then why are we still debating about Eastern, Western, Northern and Southern Armenian? Why are we still building 1001 churches in all the way from Alabama to Alaska? Have you been to that fabulous city of 1001 churches, ANI lately? When will we revisit those 1001 churches in Alabama and Alaska and WEEP!!?? Can we talk about the similarities of those so called Eastern and Western Armenian "dialects", rather than the differences?? Can we talk about things that unite us rather than those that divide? If the natives of Yervan and those of the suburbs like Moscow etc. keep telling us- THIS IS THE WAY IT IS AND IT SHALL REAMAIN SO! LOVE IT OR LEAVE IT! We spell it as "yough/yux/յուղ" not ""իւղ/iugh" then you can apply it any where !!! And in so doing thumb their noses to the diaspora! Treat them as cash cows, only fit for milking, bilking and cheating, with the not so tacit approval of the State. I mean COWS. See Carolann Najarian's sad story. Who believed that she would be as much loved and honored as she loved and honored them. See how many diasporan "aghber"s will move to the Yerevan Province! alisa
Please, dont fight here . Let's take down to the topic of this forum. Official Armenian is the Armenian of Armenian State - The Republic of Armenia. Until the Armenians in US or Europe make another Armenia country with different language it would be so. If Western Armenian is so important I can add a "West Armenian" tab in our dictionary. For Armenians living in US and Europe it may be easier to learn West Armenian. It would be also easier for foreigner to learn Armenian because Eastern Armenian is harder for pronouncing. And maybe it can help to unite both armenians languages, or at least it will help western and eastern armenians to understand each other easier. However, filling of this "Western Armenian" section should be responsibility of the people in this forum. I don't know western Armenian well enough to do this. Then the project should be: English-East. Armenian-West. Armenian - Russian - Bulgarian Dictionary Please, understand. If Armenians do not get together on a concrete project and continue to quarrel about language differences we would never have Armenian dictionary and modern Armenian state. I can not complete a full Armenian dictionary, containing both eastern and western armenian, alone. If someone is interested please send me e-mail: alisa_g@abv.bg .
