Yushchenko rules out NATO bases in Ukraine

Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko says his country is prepared to strengthen its constitution to make sure there will never be any NATO bases on its soil.

During a meeting with the Ukrainian community in Moscow, Yuschenko said the country is to hold a referendum on NATO membership.

On Tuesday, Vladimir Putin warned Yushchenko that Russia may target its missiles at Ukraine if it joins NATO and agrees to host a U.S. missile shield.

However, the two leaders did manage to settle the latest gas dispute and prevent the cutting of supplies.

Good. Ukraine's sovereignty is not going to be trampled upon.

Seriously folks, I have one question. Why does NATO still continue to exist? Wasn't its sole purpose to combat the Iron Curtain? And now that the Iron Curtain is no more, why does it exist?! I would venture to say as nothing more than the imperial arm of the biggest empire.

Friendship between Russia and Ukraine comes to an end

If Ukraine becomes a NATO member, Russia will be forced to take adequate measures in return. Russia’s Foreign Affairs Ministry released a statement in connection with a letter from the Ukrainian administration to include Ukraine in NATO Membership Action Plan.

“We believe that any country is free to independently choose a way to guarantee its own security, including the expansion of ties with military and political structures,” the statement from Russia’s Foreign Ministry said. “However, the new radical expansion of NATO may lead to serious military and political changes which will inevitably touch upon Russia’s security interests,” it continued.

The ministry reminded that Russia and Ukraine have been practicing friendly bilateral relations documented in the Treaty on Friendship, Cooperation and Partnership signed in 1997. According to the treaty, the two countries refrain from participating or supporting any actions that could damage their security. In this connection, a possible integration of Ukraine into NATO will seriously complicate Russian-Ukrainian relations. “The Russian administration is led to believe that the current Ukrainian administration views its NATO membership as an alternative to friendly ties with the Russian Federation.

Russia diplomatically tried to warn Ukraine not to sit on the fence. However, Kiev showed a hysterical reaction to the statement from Russia’s Foreign Ministry. Oleg Bilorus, the chairman of Ukraine’s Parliamentary Committee for Foreign Affairs, said that Ukraine as a sovereign state was entitled to join various international organizations like NATO or the WTO. The official urged the Foreign Ministry of Ukraine to release a reciprocal statement.

Furthermore, Oleg Bilorus said that Russia was taking an “irresponsibly absurd action” threatening Ukraine with a “two-sided joke.” The official stated that Russia was a de-factor NATO member and had no right to put obstacles on the way of the free Ukrainian nation.

It is worthy of note that the majority of Ukrainians stand against the idea of joining the North Atlantic Alliance.

In the meantime, opposition lawmakers blocked the work of the Ukrainian parliament protesting against government’s efforts about NATO membership.

The above-mentioned letter, signed by Yushchenko, Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko and Parliament Speaker Arseniy Yatsenyuk, asked that Ukraine's bid for the Membership Action Plan be considered at a NATO meeting in Romania in April.

But the Russia-friendly opposition Party of Regions - the largest faction in the 450-seat Supreme Rada (the Ukrainian parliament) - said the move was inappropriate, and lawmakers angrily swarmed the parliament hall's main podium, halting the chamber's work.

"The powers-that-be ignored the people's will and made a decision on an issue that should be made only by the Ukrainian people following a public discussion," Olena Lukash, a senior member of Party of Regions, said in a statement.

A survey of 2,012 Ukrainians taken in December found that 58.9 percent opposed NATO membership, while 21 percent favored it. The rest of respondents were undecided.

I posted this here because it deals with NATO

Georgia bent on stirring trouble with Russia to secure NATO membership

It is obvious that Georgia has to resort to rather extraordinary tactics now bordering on blatant lies so that the issue of Russia’s “aggression” against Georgia may hold the spotlight in the media. Last week the Georgian Foreign Ministry accused Russia of yet another violation of Georgian airspace, an incident that allegedly took place on August 21. However, a number of details released by Georgian authorities with regard to the purported violation make one call into question Georgia’s allegations. The timing of the latest allegations, which were predictably denied by Russia, seemed to be quite perfect for a special meeting of NATO Council, which considered last Wednesday the issue of Georgia’s accelerated integration into the system of sharing radar data between NATO and Georgia.

According to the Georgian Foreign Ministry, a Russian aircraft illegally crossed Georgia’s borders on August 21 at 6.46 p.m. local time. The violation allegedly occurred north of Omarishara village in Upper Kodori gorge. In connection with the incident, the Georgian Foreign Ministry sent a note of protest to the Russian Foreign Ministry. The note demanded that the Russian government provide a “clear and immediate explanation pertaining to the fact.” It is noteworthy that the Georgian Foreign Ministry released some flight parameters while bringing a new accusation against Russia last week. Speed characteristics related to the allegedly Russian intruder aircraft looks especially striking. The aircraft was flying in the national airspace at 470-490 km/h, according to the Georgian Foreign Ministry. “Our Georgian colleagues must be starting to suffer from hallucinations,” said Army General Yuri Baluyevsky, Chief of the Russian Armed Forces General Staff, in a comment on Georgia’s allegations. Baluyevsky is confident that the flight parameters cited by the Georgian Foreign Ministry clearly indicate that there was no violation whatsoever of Georgia’s airspace. “Although I am an infantryman, I do know that a combat aircraft does not fly at such a speed. Even a helicopter flies at a slower speed,” said Baluyevsky. However, his comments did not have any effect on Georgian Deputy Defense Minister Batu Kutelia who said once again that Russia was deliberately trying to be at loggerheads with Georgia. He added that Russia had violated Georgia’s airspace for nine times in the last three times.

It is worthy of note that Georgia brought another accusation against Russia right before the start of a NATO Council meeting on Georgia’s accelerated integration into the system of sharing radar data between NATO and Georgia. As a result, the meeting was closely watched by journalists, and many of them jumped to conclusions. Some news agencies reported that NATO was allegedly ready and willing to intervene in Russia-Georgia conflict by allowing Georgia to join the system of sharing radar data. Georgian Deputy Foreign Minister Georgi Manzhgaladze was quick to state that Georgia had modernized its air defense equipment for monitoring airspace. “Today Georgia is ready for making part of the system, which will enable to share radar data on aerial situation in an automatic mode between Georgia and NATO member states and partners,” Manzhgaladze said.

Meanwhile, Carmen Romero, a spokeswoman for NATO Headquarters in Brussels, said that “media reports about sharing radar data between NATO and Georgia lack grounds.” According to Romero, on its Wednesday meeting NATO Council only considered the issue of Georgia’s accelerated integration into the shared radar data system, “which is a complex technical issue but it is yesterday’s news anyway.” She added that the agreement on sharing radar and satellite information between NATO member states and other countries, including Georgia and Albania, was signed in 2003. “By no means is it a news story worthy to appear in the headlines,” Romero said. “During its latest meeting in Brussels, NATO Council made a decision to implement the agreement. The decision has nothing to do with the missile incident, it is a mere coincidence,” Romero added.

The above statement of NATO Headquarters spokeswoman is open to interpretation. Georgia sees it as an advantage, stressing the point that from now onward Georgia’ s entire territory and airspace will be closely monitored by North Atlantic Treaty Organization, and therefore Georgia’s much sought-after integration into NATO must be in the works. Brussels seems to be taking a rather cautious stand on the issue, putting special emphasis on the complexity of various technical procedures related to the system of radar data exchange and a lack of conformity between the military standards of NATO and Georgia. However, the attitude does not prevent Tbilisi from launching propaganda campaign to stir up various provocations designed to undermine Russia’s position in Abkhazia and South Ossetia, the regions of Georgia’s interests.

With the fall of the Berlin wall, NATO needed some justification of their existence. The handiest one was "inventing" a new enemy - global terrorism. That is on the surface. What is the real cause of NATO is promoting and securing "peace" - read status quo. NATO defends anything that is not under the direct control of Anglo-Americans - pipelines, fake borders, basically corporate interests.

Correct me if I'm wrong; but who is pretty much in control these days of the so called Anglo-American-Pipelines and basically corporate interests? Israel's sticky hands. And Israel sees Russia as his enemy. NATO will be around to get their sticky hands into territories that is not their business to be around in.

If a war strikes, it will be basically between Anglo-American-Israel-Corporate-Pipelines

and Russia I'm afraid.

You're right. I remember you told me that you've heard that Israel see's Russia as a threat. I've read number of articles on that as well. I found these quotes by Nostradamus in regards to Armenia :) I though I should copy it for the heck of it.

The army of the third antichrist (an enemy of peace) will begin its trek towards Europe from a region between the Caspian and Black Seas. It appears that they will pass through Alania (southwestern Russia) and Armenia, then into Turkey (quatrain #5-54). From there they invade most all of Europe.

From beyond the Black Sea and great Tartary,

There will be a King who will come to see Gaul,

He will pierce through "Alania" and Armenia,

And within Byzantium will he leave his bloody rod.

The year that the brothers of the lily come of age,

One of them will hold the great "Romanie:"

The mountains to tremble, Latin passage opened

Agreement to march against the fort of Armenia.

"On the fields of Media, of Arabia, and of Armenia

Two great armies will assemble three times:

Near the bank of Araxes the host,

Of great Suleiman will fall in the land." (C.3:31)
