The painting - mentiond in my first post!

House-in-Siberia-Painting.jpg

Quote from Antonina Mahari about my gradfather!

`I was very young when they arrested me. What followed was ten years

in jail. I had turned 29 by the time I was released. I was arrested

for belonging to an underground students' group called Freedom for

Lithuania. What was wrong with a bunch of students wanting freedom for

Lithuania? The Soviet authorities persecuted us and wanted to erase

the Baltic States. There was a great Armenian painter there as well,

Ashot Sanamyan. He had been arrested for membership in the Independent

Armenia secret organization and spent twenty years in prison. I have

written about him too,' says Antonina Mahari.

A fascinating account. Thank you Ashot.

Have you met Mrs.Mahari?**

Even more fascinating is the fact that Ashot Sanamian is in fact your grandfather.

Has he ever spoken about it? You should write about his memoirs.

**See where she says that people will not address her so, but rather as Antonina Mikhaylnova. Xenophobia? Despise of the - ODAR-?

Is that why we know next to nothing about AK’s Russia(?) wife Nina Makarova***, or even LTP’s wife Lucia, aside from the fact that their son David was given a hrya name and now lives in telaviv?

***Was she in fact of Armenian origin, daughter of Makar/Magar?

Dear Arpa - the sad part is my grandfather passed away from Siberian plague way before I was born... from digging information I found out that he was jailed 3 times, each time for a long period... I have met Mrs. Antonina in person once which was few years back. In fact Gurgen has mentioned grandfather quiet a few times in his books! :-)

Dear Arpa - My family the Sanamians (Sanamonc) were from Bayazet - who came to create New Bayazet in 1836... My father Gevorg Sanamian was born in Yerevan, my grandfather Ashot Sanamian was born in New Bayazet...

the other half of the family who moved out of Bayazet in 1880's moved directly to Baku area, our connections were lost from 1836 :-(

Thank you Ashot for your prompt response.

Your mention of the cause of death of grandfather Ashot being from the so called Siberian Plague piqued my interest. I found out that most references point to an epidemic of Anthrax. A disease primarily of bovine/porcine**/cattle origin, while others advance its origin to rodents.

Who is correct? Pasteur or Yersin?

** See the mention of them tending to herds of pigs.

Ashot please tell us more about your grandfather. We understand that he was a painter. Have you seen any of his art?

See below.

In particular, in Zvenigorodka town a man, 38, cut his left fore arm during butchering. When he called for medical assistance in the town hospital he was diagnosed with "erysipeloid, Siberian plague." Doctors also took samples for further examination in a lab of dangerous infections.

Specialists of the state sanitary and veterinary services are holding investigation to reveal the source of the bacteria and its distribution path.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plague_(disease)

]Plague[/b] is a deadly infectious disease that is caused by the enterobacteria Yersinia pestis, named after the French-Swiss bacteriologist Alexandre Yersin. Primarily carried by rodents (most notably rats) and spread to humans via fleas, the disease is notorious throughout history, due to the unrivaled scale of death and devastation it brought. Until June 2007

I'm always chiming in late, and this is somewhat off topic (I will get to that at a more convenient time), bu Pasteur was always wrong. Come on. Even he knew that:

http://greenearthfound.blogspot.com/2009/09/louis-pasteur-versus-claude-bernard-on.html

There is an apocryphal story that Pasteur renounced his germ theory on his death-bed, saying that “Bernard is right. The microbe is nothing. The environment is everything.” The renowned 20th century French-American microbiologist René Dubos (1901-1982) agreed with Bernard’s principle: “Most microbial diseases are caused by organisms present in the body of a normal individual. They become the cause of disease when a disturbance arises which upsets the equilibrium of the body.”
