Azat Posted May 24, 2008 Report Share Posted May 24, 2008 Dima Belan of Russia Is The Winner of Eurovision 2008 The winner of Eurovision 2008 song festival with the majority of votes became Dima Belan from Russia. Dima's Eurovision winning was much deserved. Ukraine came number two. The third place was Greece. Sirusho of Armenia bacame number four. There were many good performances. However, it seems that Eurovision has become a way to show or give favors to neighboring countires or other countries where you have good friends or big diaspora. For example. Turkey gives the top votes for Azerbaijan and Azerbaijan gives the top votes to Turkey. Romania gives the top Eurovision votes to Moldova and vise versa. Russia's Dima Belan had a superb performance and truly deserved to be the number one. Ice skater champion Plushenko was skating on a small place around Belan and a Hungarian violinist was accompanying with Stradivarius Violin. I felt truly sorry for Georgia. Diana Gurtskaya representing Georgia had a very beautiful song and a very high quality performance. On the top of that she had a great message "Peace Will Come." Unfortunately Gerogia seems not to have that many friends to get enough votes. Diana did not come in the top 5, but it was considered that she would be one of the possible winners of the Eurovision 2008. Serbia had put together a great show for which the country deserves much credit. Next year the Eurovision 2009 will be hosted in Moscow according to the rules of the contest. However, it needs to be advocated to make changes in voting rules so the best of the best comes on the top (Dima Belan in my opinion was the best and deserved it), but not the country that has the most friends voting for it. Of course, Azerbaijan was not competing last year... Only reason we lost was because we did not consistently get points. We had more 'douze points' (with 8) than any other country but some (like those Scandinavian countries) gave us nothing. Even the Georgians gave us 12 points. I don't understand how anyone here can be proud of Sirusho, when it was the diaspora's doing. And you know what the message is that we're sending to the Armenian organizers, don't you? "We want more of this!" Anyone can guess what Armenia will send next year: Karo/Maro/Bghdo/Sateno and all will make the same kitschy, embarrassing 'music'. What happened to the likes of Nana Mouskouri who deserved to win Eurovision? Why do Armenians need to be so blindly nationalistic, instead of voting for the song that truly deserves to win? Watching Eurovision is an absolute proof of what globalization is doing to National identities...and tastes!!!!!!!! The first prize went to a Russian imitating Michael Jackson at his worst.. Nothing Russian about the song or the rythm evoking anything one can associate with balalaikas????? or the deep basses that bring the steppes and rivers in mind. The two accompanying pantomimers were pathetic not to say effeminate . The second prize went to a would be Maddona/Cher imitator with yet again nothing to distinguish as Ukrainness...The sexual girations and males lined against the walls as appreciating onlookers reminds one of a soft porn exhibition The song could have been any of the products put out in N.America on a daily basis... copy catting each other! The third was even more alien to anything that reminds of the great Buzukis of Greece. Once more sexual connotations and exhibitionism were anathema to what a cultural taste should be Nana should be crying in her greek coffee cup...Her songs, even if in languages other then Greek, always sound as though it's in Greek. The hardest to appreciate is Sirusho, singing Quele Quele whilst imitating a belly dancer... since when did Armenians adopt the belly dancing as a national trait? Are the visits to the Gulf states having a nefarious effect on our culture? I have seen and heard some early Sirusho recordings that are truly tasteful and have Armenian "nafas" to them! Why did she succomb to the temptation of imitating global rubbish? The first few notes with duduk...... and it's over... Being fourth due to blind voting since she is Armenian... is acknowledging the bankrupt art scene amongst Armenian artists... Have we sunk to levels that, in order to win we can also prostitute our culture by imitating Maddonas, Chers, and other pop divas, that have made it in the international markets by hybrid globalized, bastardized art-forms???????! Harut Posted May 26, 2008 Report Share Posted May 26, 2008 since when eurovision was supposed to be an cultural festival? it is and will be a pop show meant to attract the masses... and the organizer are doing a good job at that... from what i see, most europeans don't take it more than that, just another pop show... it's the backward emmigrant nations, such as armenians, turks, the balkan nations that pay so much attention it and inject it with nationalistic pride... if someone is so much talented and intelligent that they could come up with performances that are captivating the masses and yet are completely based on one's ethnic heritage, than they would not bother to perform at contests such as the eurovision...
