hagopn
http://www.csmonitor.com/2007/1101/p06s02-wome.htm I have some exceprts from the article in Italics below: "People have become accustomed to this plot line of America being a threat to Turkish national security. This was inconceivable five years ago, but now it has come to be the prevailing view," says Ihsan Dagi, a professor of international relations at Ankara's Middle East Technical University.l Indeed. Now all that is left is for the US to finally notice that Turkey is actually a security threat to the US. How you say? Turks will jeopardize the US' diplomatic foothold in everyway conceivable, as the increasingly incorrigible Turkish military (supposedly with the green light of the impotent Parliament) will slam bang into Kurdistan, rag away in the region, blowing at US convoys and troops and then say "oops!". That perception has been reinforced in the past two years by some of Turkey's most popular books and films which portray the US and Turkey at odds - if not at war. Turkey's all-time box office champ, 2006's "Valley of the Wolves," saw a ragtag Turkish force square off heroically against a whole division of bloodthirsty American soldiers in northern Iraq. "Metal Storm," a bestselling political fantasy book from the year before, went even further, describing an all out war between Ankara and Washington in the not so distant future (the year 2007, to be exact), in which Turkey ultimately prevails with the help of Russia and the European Union. Perhaps the boneheads in the US, among them the clowns in the McLaughlin Group, choose to ignore this above, but Turks are Turks. "The public is really convinced that the United States is no longer a friend and ally. That is really frustrating," says Professor Dagi. "The clearest fact is that the real threats against Turkey come not from its neighbors, but from its 'allies' and each new development brings Turkey face to face with its Western allies," Ali Bulac, a columnist for the liberal-Islamic Zaman newspaper, recently wrote. "The United States ... is taking its place on the stage as the force behind the PKK." badabingo! Most Anti-American Nations Percentage surveyed with an unfavorable view of the US 1. I would venture to guess that being "anti-American" in Pakistan means something completely different than being "anti-American" in Germany. Nevertheless, some eye-opening poll-stats.... I would say, however, that the anti-American attitude in Turkey is definitely similar in quality as that in Pakistan and apparently stronger in intensity! hagopn
What's funny is that most of these countries have very pro-USA governments in charge. Turkey, Pakistan, Jordan, Egypt are all staunch USA allies, Germany is hosting a US military base and Spain had occupied Iraq up til the Madrid bombings of 2003 alongside the infamous "coalition of the willing"... That tells you how much Yankees are loved, especially their soldiers, marines, and other "likeables." In Germany the Polizei were looking, itching for excuses to beat the hell out of US troops. When you're in Germany at, say, Oktoberfest, and a fight breaks out among drunks, you can bet they are American troops. Then you will see Polizei come in with the clubs and whack away. They should ask Okinawans!--- It would probalby be in the 3 digits-- Edited November 2, 2007 by hagopn
