Yes, sometime I feel like gathering all those so called dictionaries, composed by who knows who amateur “linguists“, and offer them as fuel to warm the homes in Gumri during the cold winters.

Of course, we, each of us, needs a dictionary where the words are transliterated to our liking and with an orthography that WE are accustomed to. Is it Hye or Hay, is it Nakhichevan of Nakhjavan? Is it Vanatsor or Vanadzor? Is it historical Artsakh or furk-azeri Karabababubu?

I may have one of the most complete English-Armenian dictionaries that was brought to me as a gift in return of my benevolence. “complete”? I discovered, much to my chagrin that in that Soviet times tome a whole section from page 744 to 815 was totally missing. It is even more frustrating when one looks up a word like “automobile” the Armenian is listed as “avto-meqena/ավտո մեքենա” and the Armenian for “emotion” is emotsia/էմոցիա, “tractor/տրաքտոր”.

Of course, we, each one of us needs a dictionary to satisfy our version of the Armenian Language, eastern, western, northern and southern, Glendale-ian, Bourj Hamoudian, Yerevanian, Soviet or Masthots orthography.

Just as each and every one of 8 million us may have an opinion how the Homeland should conduct itself , we also have 8 million opinions of how a dictionary should be.

Can we leave the composition of dictionaries to LINGUISTS, I mean REAL LIGUISTS, pay and sustain them to do what they know best?

Finally. Dear NorHayastan, why do you feel the need to compose a new dictionary? Do you have a problem reading the existing ones? Do you think that an Armenian dictionary should be totally and completely written in the Latin Alphabet? Like ԲԱՌԱՐԱՆ should be written as PARARAN?

Dear NorHayastan, I don't know what to make of your nickname. Do you mean "qlendel" is the Nor Hayastan?

In the meantime, have you seen the response to your quest about Urartuan-ArmenianGlossary. Follow Johanes' posts at "ՈՒՐԱՐՏԵՐԷՆ".

Arpa jan, you probably didnd't understand me correctly. I'm not composing a "new dictionary," I just wanted to digitalize our existing ones, and combine and filter out such words like you have mentioned and replace them with Armenian words (i.e. Tunel (Tunnel) --> Pakughi), etc... This has nothign to do with composing a new dictionary but rather to make it easier for people like you and me to find a word, MUCH FASTER than before. On top of which, one dictionary may not have a word I am looking for, but another dictionary might. So by combining them, we can make the comprehensive dictionary I mentioned.

 

What do you mean that the Armenian dictionary should be totally written in the latin alphabet? Since I only know English and Armenian, the dictionary would most likely be for English speakers (English -> Armenian, Armenian -> English).

Mi xosqov Arpa jan, we have yet to have a comprehensive dictionary program for Armenian, and I wanted to create it and spread it everywhere, so people who don't have a dictionary, or those who are too lazy to look, can always find the Armenian equivalent word they are lookign for, or to clarify an Armenian word which they don't know.

 

I think we can do this, and if we form a small little group, we can do so much together, for our nationality I truly believe it.

Եւ ես կարծեցի որ հայկական բառ մըն էր: Բայց, «բնաւ» ալ չ'ըլլա՞ր: Օրինակ՝ «I don't like you at all.»ը «Բնաւ քեզ չեմ սիրեր» կ'ըլլայ, չէ՞:
