Portugal rallies to draw 1-1 with Armenia in Euro 2008 qualifying

The Associated PressPublished: August 22, 2007

YEREVAN, Armenia: Cristiano Ronaldo scored an equalizer late in the first half Wednesday to give Portugal a 1-1 draw with Armenia in a European Championship qualifier.

Artavazd Karamyan gave the hosts an early lead with a header in the 12th minute. Ronaldo then capitalized on a mistake in the box to beat goalkeeper Roman Berezovsky from a narrow angle in the 37th.

"Today it was a beautiful evening for Armenian soccer," Armenia coach Ian Porterfield said.

After an even first half, Portugal applied pressure in the second and missed several scoring chances. The hosts, who upset Group A leader Poland in June, replied with rare counterattacks and managed to secure the draw.

"The draw is a logical result for the match," Portugal coach Luiz Felipe Scolari said. "We definitely came here to win, but Armenia played quality soccer today."

Imagine we tie Poland, and Portugal and Serbia don't win. Now try not to hate chicken Azerbaijan.

This is so funny.

When , in 1996 We were in Yerevan, and we learned that that night there was going to be a "futbol" macth between Portugal and Armenia.

We all went to the Hraztan Stadium. It was a glorous night with Armen almost scoring a goal v Vasco DeGama almost scoring another goal. I don't remember the outcome. It may have been 0-0, but you had to see the faces of the Armenian fans. ( I have it all on tape) .

Here is the best part. One of our copanions that night was an American of Portuguese heritage. You should have seen us how we "roasted/ khorovats" him that night. However, the good sport that he was, when I sent him a message with an image of "soccer shoes" he was so gracious to respond in equally gracious manner.

Something similar happened to a relative of mine. Few years ago Armenia lost very badly to some European team. It was humiliating - something like 5:0. My brothers' employees kept quite for the whole day, knowing pretty well that he is pissed. At the end of the work day one of his colleges came to his office and said that on behalf of the whole company they "greet" him 5 times. :)
