Shahan Araradian
It has nothing to do with eastern or western. It is all how Mashtots intended. Why he devised three different T's and three different P's. Why did he? Was he some kind of a sadistic practical joker? We are not talking about east or west, we are talking about turkified phonetics. FYI, the Marash dialect which is definitely western still pronounces Ben as B, Gim as G and Da as D., and so do the Musa Leratsis. It is only in Istanbul that Ben became P and Da became T We keep up this stupid argument and see how many other ways we can divide the nation. Classical Armenian (from time of Mashdots) phonology DOES NOT EQUAL to Eastern Armenian phonology!!! Why can't you understand this?
Shahan Araradian
Yeah right! How about brodcasts with the third largest dialect like Boston Armenian?? Is this any way to unite us or to mainatin enhance the division? Maybe you guys are right. When we reconquer Western Armenia, and crowm Aram I as king we can declare WA as the official language. Do those programs open with ՓԱՐԷՒ /Parev and ՓԱՐԻ ԼՈՅՍ/Pari luys, or do th open with highly educated and sophisticated ԸՆՏԻՐ ՀԱՅԵՐԷՆ,"ՈՒՐԵՄՆ ԱՅՍՕՐ"? There is no "third" dialect. If you know anything about the history of modern Armenian, you'll know that there are only two standard Armenian dialects, standardized in the mid-19th century: one based on the dialect of Constantinople (Western Armenian), and the other based on the Ararat region (Eastern Armenian). Shahan Araradian
Yeah right! A few weaks ago I was at a place where there were two 2 year olds who are just learning to speak and their aunt was teaching the ԱՅՓ ՓԵՆ ՔԻՄ ԹԱ. I could not hold it anymore, I had to say something as to why are we teaching our children AYP PEN QIM TA instead of Ayb Ben Gim Da. Of course there were people there who would have hanged me if they had long enough rope. Many of us may have passed that stage, but it may be time to teach our children correct phonetics. Does not matter if we "goudem gor/koutem kor" as long as we pronounce the consonnants as Mashtots meant them. I've said it before, and I'll say it again: Eastern Armenian phonology DOES NOT EQUAL Classical Armenian phonology as "Mashdots meant them." (There were NEVER any ejectives in Classical Armenian, and Eastern Armenian has also undergone a sound shift!) To understand this, you will first have to lose your arrogance and approach the problem objectively. Zartonk
I don't see what's so horrible about wanting my native dialect to be preserved and propogated. I feel very passionately about this because it is because of the Genocide that Western Armenian was relegated to the 4 corners of the globe. It is not the official language of any state, and so it has no protection from extinction. What's wrong with me wanting to see that it continues to live? I have nothing nothing nothing NOTHING against Eastern Armenian. I read it every day (online news sites) and I understand it well. I can even speak it, if compelled. I see Armenians as one ethnicity, one people. But that does not stop me from wanting to see the Western Armenian dialect -- with its rich heritage -- continue to live. Gor-Gor, I absolutely understand and sympathize with what you saying. What I meant was that the way you were jubilating about it made WA sound like a neglected, near-extinct INCOMPREHENSIBLE tongue I speak the Iranian variety of EA, and in all honesty, It is NOT that hard to understand and speak WA. I am as "fluent" as any Western Armenian! I apologize if I came across wrong. One more thing: How similar are the WA of Beirut and Ciro and the Western Armenian of Kilikia and Mush? How different? Like you said, it's not a matter of wrongly SPOKEN Armenian. Neither EA OR WA really parallels Classic Armenian.

To understand this, you will first have to lose your arrogance and approach the problem objectively. Thank you for stating this clearly to Arpa, but he still won't listen, because his arrogance of the Eastern dialect is blocking his judgement. Arpa, please understand that the two dialects (Eastern and Western) are both equally different from the "Mashtots dialect". Considering the Armenian language as two halves of the same whole isn't separating us apart, but your supremacy of one dialect is.
Shahan Araradian
One more thing: How similar are the WA of Beirut and Ciro and the Western Armenian of Kilikia and Mush? How different? Standard Western Armenian is all the same. It's based on the dialect of Constantinople. Now, at the turn of the 20th century in the Ottoman Empire (as in Russian Armenia), there were still DOZENS of Armenian dialects (You might want to have a look at "Armenia: A historical atlas" by Hewsen which shows a map of the various dialects on a map). However, what was being taught in Armenian schools in the 20th century in Beirut, Haleb, Cairo, Montreal, and all the other Diasporan Armenian schools except for Iran, was standard Western Armenian. Hence, regional dialects faded away with time as the new generation of Armenians learned either standard Western Armenian (in most of the diaspora) or standard Eastern Armenian (in Soviet Armenian and Iran, with Iran continuing to use traditional Armenian orthography). The only really spoken regional Western Armenian dialect (other than Constantinople) that I know of is what the Musa Lertsis (now a.k.a. Anjartsis) speak. But I do know people who still speak regional dialect of Dikranagerd, for example, but the numbers are very limited. So, coming back to your question: Beirut Western Armenian == Cairo Western Armenia. It's difficult to say what Cilician Armenian sounded like because every one left Adana around 1920 when the French left, and most of the survivors were young and therefore educated in standard Western Armenian. We have surviving Dikranagerd or Urfa dialect because Armenian survivors lived in those places for years after the genocide before moving to Syria. My mom and her sisters can speak with the Dikranagerd dialect, as their father did not speak standard WA (he never went to school). I also know an Arab woman who was raised partly by Dikranagerd-dialect-speaking Armenians, and so the only Armenian she knows is the Dikranagerd dialect -- it's a treat to witness. And today, of all days, my mom made me listen to a CD of songs sung in the Dikranagerd dialect. I told her "Inch hianali pan. Yerevagayeh 100-150 dari arach, Dikranagerdi mech ays lezvov ge khosein. Ov kider te ayskan dari yedk, Amerigayi mech mayr oo zavag me ayt nouyn parparov yerkeroo mdig bidi enein." I wouldn't call the Dikranagerd dialect healthy -- it's on its last legs, of course. But it hasn't died quite yet. I would also add to your list of existing WA dialects that of Kessab, Syria. They still use that dialect in Kessab (I went there 6 years ago) -- although the once-Armenian town has been overtaken with Muslims.
